Online gaming is huge in South Korea. No other country has more homes connected to the Internet
via broadband, and some estimates peg the number of online gamers in the country at 70% to 80% of population.
For this reason, the South Korean government keeps a watchful eye on online gaming, announcing on Monday a "set of measures" to "crack down on increasing hacking attacks on online game items," according to Yonhap News.
Try to imagine any governmental department in the Western world even understanding what it means to play a massively multiplayer game, let alone what it means to duplicate valuable virtual property or even caring to stop it. The country is years ahead of the rest of us.
Does South Korea's cultural, legal and technical lead in the online gaming arena mean that the country is positioned to be the Japan of tomorrow's gaming industry? How many times do you reckon a console system has been proposed within Samsung?
