Looks like Best Buy flubbed the
Xbox 360 event that they held over the weekend. Mistakes made, according to anecdotal evidence shared by people who
were there.
- Perhaps the biggest mistake was Best Buy’s decision to stockpile all of the Xbox 360s that they get in over the last week or more in order to have a big re-launch event that they could heavily promote. The stores would have easily sold any replenishment stock without a promotion, so why do it?
- Reader Matt Fernandez wrote in to tell us that eager shoppers started queueing about 24 hours in advance at the Best Buy in San Jose, California. By 1pm the day before the big sale, all Xbox 360 units were spoken for by people in line, leaving everyone else who showed up throughout the night and the next morning empty-handed.
There are plenty of retailers out there that are restocking their shelves the moment that they receive new Xbox 360s. Unless you particularly enjoy overnight lines, overzealous police, and pavement rash, go elsewhere for your 360. We’ve received dozens of tips telling us about this big Best Buy weekend and we passed on them all because it’d be negligent for us to encourage anybody else to show up for a scene like that. Some Best Buy stores allegedly broke the law on launch day (lawsuits ongoing), and some continue to break customer’s trust.
