Joystiq Review: Project Gotham Racing 3 (Xbox 360)

Like Playboy, Project Gotham Racing 3 (PGR3) isn't about realism: it's about deliciously impossible bodies glossily reproduced for a mostly male audience sweatily grasping joysticks. PGR3 succeeds because the game's developers packed the game's 75 cars with more polygons than a geometry textbook. And just as the airbrushed beauties in a centerfold spread are never allowed to be seen in an unflattering light, the hot bods in PGR3 are never allowed to be deformed by crashes that would make a car enthusiast cry. (This of course makes a game enthusiast cry. Racing games are more fun when designers allow us to total the vehicles.)
Top five delights offered by PGR3, in addition to the aforementioned sploogetacular car porn:
- Loving detail. I've made it a point to take New Yorkers on the bridge tour and their acclaim for it has been universal. "That's really fantastic!" said a buddy. "Can I just stop driving so fast and take it slow? I'm missing the view!" said my non-gamer wife (who was thrilled by the game). Even the crowd in the game has been modeled carefully: each person standing on the other side of the racing barrier has been randomly assembled from a collection of parts so that you'll never see fifty of the same green-shirted, blue-capped, brown-faced fellows clustered in an area. This doesn't sound amazing, but look at EA's crowds in comparison. That Bizarre would spend resources modeling realistic crowds shows a level of artistry and care that many sports titles lack.
- Pure driving pleasure. Experienced and novice drivers alike enjoy the experience. A German friend who has driven a performance roadster on the Autobahn felt that the game offers an authentic driving experience. Two friends from NYC, each with under 100 hours cumulative lifetime driving experience, both noted that they felt that they were learning to drive better by playing the game.
- Depth. Good games take moments to learn and a lifetime to master. We've played and/or watched others playing the game for over 80 hours. There's just so much to learn here that one could pick this title up and play it to exclusion of every other Xbox 360 launch title. Skill--not luck--makes a tremendous difference in your in-game performance. Though Xbox 360 achievements can extend the life of any game, most games lack the depth that makes playing them for hundreds of hours fun. King Kong has none of this. PGR3 has all of it and it's therefore worth every penny of the $50.00 retail price--maybe even a good portion of the $75,000 you'll spend to slake the burning sensation that Bizarre's car porn creates in your tight little gamer shorts.
- Sounds. As has come to be expected in modern sports games, the soundtrack includes an eclectic mix of popular and lesser-known artists from Mozart to Kool Keith. There's hip hop, industrial electronica, Japanese Pop, Rock, Electronica, Alternative Rock and a bunch of other stuff that Bizarre hasn't blogged about yet. It's a lot of work to license this much music for a game-- the game's credits list five individuals who were likely involved with lining up the tracks for the game. The only disappointment here: no Kraftwerk? The game's engine sounds are superbly modeled too, but we're not embarrassed to admit that we actually turned them down so that we could better hear the radio tunes.
- Good difficulty calibration. In single-player mode, the game's difficulty scales with the quality of the car under control. A "Speed Test" challenge requires that the driver hit 73.5 miles per hour at the novice level in a Shelby Cobra GT 500, but 90.1 miles per hour driving a Ferrari F50 GT. This calibration adds to the game's replayability and depth. "Hard" and "Hardcore" in this game are truly difficult. None of the drivers I've asked to play the game can complete the Nurburgring challenges at either difficulty.
Top annoyances offered by PGR3, in addition to aforementioned lack of damage modeling:
- Load times. The load times in this game are just silly and are the top indicator that the game was rushed to meet the launch window. As our ample praise for the other Bizarre Creations launch title shows, these developers know how to put together a flawless gaming experience. PGR's egregious load times show that the team wasn't able to spend much time optimizing the movement of data from disc to console. On shorter challenges in the single-player campaign, the load time actually exceeds the amount of time it takes to run the short section of track. Ridge Racer (Xbox 360), by comparison, doesn't need to reload the last track you raced if you choose to race it again.
- Confusing menu system. The game's menu systems are a crime by any usability textbook. Even after dozens of hours playing the game, it's still difficult to find the right play mode for the right moment.
- Crashes. Of all of the Xbox 360 games we've played, PGR3 crashes the most, yet more evidence that this one wasn't done with QA when it was sent to retail. The game crashes about once an hour when playing in multiplayer mode, less often if you avoid looking at other racers' gamertags and avoid submitting player feedback.
- Multiplayer glitches. In addition to the abovementioned crashes, the game's multiplayer mode is rife with glitches. When sitting in a multiplayer lobby, for instance, every time a new player joins the lobby the countdown timer resets. This can happen a dozen or more times when waiting for a game to start as players join a match, assess the competition, and determine that the match will be either too easy or too difficult for them, and leave. Frustrating! (For an example of good lobby implementation, see Blizzard's Starcraft waiting room.)
- Kudos & credits miscalibration. It's too easy to obtain credits to purchase new cars. Therefore, obtaining new cars doesn't feel like a special event. We were able to obtain the best car (ranked by performance) in the game (the Ferrari F50 GT) before we had even completed the single-player campaign on easy mode. What's more, some of the concept cars can only be unlocked after obtaining a large number of kudos (points for racing with style). Kudos can be much, much harder to come by, but by the time you've obtained enough of them to unlock sub-standard concept cars, you're long past the point of wanting to drive these lesser-performing vehicles.
Few of the game's annoyances affect the actual racing experience. Once you're in a race, it's generally flawless. It's getting there that can be a chore. Still, the game's depth makes this one a keeper, not a renter.
Overall Rating: 8.0 / 10

Excellent review, but I have to take exception to your crashes annoyances. I have yet to experience this in Live play and I know several other players that also have not experienced any problem.
One other annoyance you forgot to mention would be the lack of knowing who is talking during Live play. When you really want to send feedback on someone you can't figure out who it really was because there is no indicator during play as to who is speaking.

I enjoy this game. The detail of Canal street and Park Row in NYC is stunning, and Tokyo' Shinjuku area detail is just as accurate (although Shibuya/Harujuku would have been more fun to see!)...
That being said and respected, I'm still let down by the jagged, lower-res game-play that takes over from the beautiful HD menu system, and the HD resolution that taunts you right up until the last minute, down to the chiming-countdown HD camera shots that suddenly devolve into some chunky proprietary res right when the race starts...
We can take your 'Playboy' metaphor even further here if you want: Something about realizing it's still a magazine after being lost for a few charming seconds...

Wow, this is the first review that talks about the cons of the game that I have read.
James F. @ Dec 27th 2005 11:21PM
Hmm... I have 25+ hrs on pgr3 and fair share (3 or 4hrs) playing online. I've never had a system crash. AND I was playing on a launch day 360 with a launch day copy of pgr3 (do they improve load times, over time?).
So I dunno why you guys are crashing so much.
Anyways great review. As a former new yorker and native/current las vegan and a tokyo tourist, I can verify that the locational realism is downright scary good. I am surprised you didn't give it a 9 though. But thats cool. It's good to have high standards.
My one bone to pick is that you didn't mention that the game allows you to use essentially whatever car you want to use for the games entirity. After having accumulated every ferrari and every lambo(to get gamer points of course)I still stuck with my TVR sagaris (a c-class car) and finished the game on medium and am currently digging thru hard. One thing I always disliked when the early gran turismo games was that with your early car you claw your way up from nothing and sort of "bond" with that ride but eventually you run out of mods to get(even the uber pricey "race" conversion) and you gotta kick that civic to the curb for something with rwd and more cylinders. In pgr3 once you find the car you like you can just use that car and succeed.
Anyways thanks for the review!

Thanks for this! I was leaning towards this game, and this was the final push. I'm going to go out and buy this sometime this week.
theburn16 @ Dec 27th 2005 11:44PM
for those of you that keep saying that your game hasn't crashed, it's not going to crash on EVERYBODY'S system. but i have had this happen numerous times, but only when i was checking someone else's gamertag. this is very annoying because i'm always about to enter a race and it freezes and i then have to shut the console down and start it back up. but i defenitely recommend this game to everybody as it is an awesome game, but i also agree about the menu's being hard to navigate

Thank you for an excellent review. Even though Joystiq is coming out late with game reviews, I would rather prefer your style of reviewing the game after playing it thoroughly, rather than like some of the game sites that just rehash the PR data sheet of the game just with different words.
Even with all the obvious faults, this game does so much more stuff right and better than its peers that this game is in a class of its own. I just cannot wait to see what Bizarre can do with the next iteration of the game, if this is what they achieved for a launch game.
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 28th 2005 12:49AM
Graphically this is the best looking racing game to ever grace consoles up to this point. This review was very good, however one of your gripes with the Multiplayer is pretty retarded. The timer resets every time a new player comes into the lobby for a reason, its not a glitch. Its not hard to figure out Bizarre wanted to give other players more time to join and the room to fill up. Did you notice when the last person enters the room the timer shoots down to 5 seconds from 30?
Dustin Solis @ Dec 28th 2005 1:06AM
I'd also like to chime in and say that crashing has never been a problem with my copy of PGR3. The only game I've had that problem with is Ridge Racer 6. Otherwise, I pretty much agree with everything else in the review.
HardwareGuy @ Dec 28th 2005 1:46AM
I hated the dead feeling of the cars. When you're turning beyond your tire's grip you have no sort of feedback (controller vibration or tire screeching sounds) to let you know you're overcooked. You basically have to guess and hope you didn't brake too much... or little.
The online was definitely cool, and we had no crashing problems, but the loading times were a bit excessive I thought (though if I took a stopwatch to it it's probably on par with Gran Turismo 4, if not a smidge slower).
miguel @ Dec 28th 2005 2:04AM
I too have yet to experience a crash. I've played the baajesus out of it.
The ZeroCorpse @ Dec 28th 2005 2:14AM
I dunno. I'm not into racers like this one. I'm digging NFS:Most Wanted right now on the 360, but when Burnout hits, I'm done with NFS. I gots to have me my crashes!
Driving games in which your car is invulnerable are old tech. We have the ability to make realistic crashes now--- SO DO IT!!!

Congrats everyone for being bullshitted into buying this game after all the "high definition era" marketing hype with this game having a really low resolution and having to be upscaled to 720p.

I want to ask the person who said about the jaggies etc what tv he is playing on? because I have 2 360's 1 hooked up to a hidef LCD and one to a crt monitor thats hidef and have no jaggies at all I also tried it on my normal crt before i got my vga cable for the monitor. Again no jaggies. I wonder if your on pgr2 LOL
soco @ Dec 28th 2005 6:12AM
i'd get your 360 checked out or make sure it's getting enough air because i've checked gamertags and played for a few hours online and never had a crash. i've had one crash with this game and it was after returning to the menu from a career race. besides MS is in a big giving mood at the moment. a friend of mine sat on his headset and MS is just sending him a new one for free ;) this in addition to all the overnighting of the few bad consoles.
the counter restarting i don't think is a glitch. everyone needs a chance to adjust their cars and such. if everyone is playing with a class E car and someone joins with a class A car and there are 2 seconds left on the counter, that's a bit unfair and would piss me off much more than waiting a bit more. i ended up doing this last night but just by not noticing.
i will agree though that it's needed more QA. the achievement system is rather sketchy. there seems to be a bug that prevents everyone from getting the full 1000 gamerpoints (the online pro seems to never register), and if you're not connected to live when you get certain achievements, it will never give them to you. the load times are my single biggest gripe with the game. some of the single player events take less time to play than loading around it. i don't really understand why it needs to reload the main menu. couldn't they have been compressed and shoved in like a spare 32MB of ram or something, so that i didn't have to sit through 2 loading scenes for every event? honestly though, if there is one innovation Nintendo should get credit for with this generation it's that there's virtually no load times for their games. this should really be a part of what the next generation is about. with all that processing power, it should be possible to heavily compress that stuff and stream the rest.
the sad part about this game is its wasted beauty. unless you go into photo mode or slow the car down, most people will never see the attention to the little details. like that the crowds are all individually animated, and if you come too close to the walls, they'll all back away from the walls or throw their arms up in guard. some of the scenery, such as Las Vegas is just amazingly beautiful and detailed.
Rymix @ Dec 28th 2005 6:50AM
PGR3 has crashed my 360 a few times...
You forgot to mention that the game is way too easy, start to finish. There are five difficulty settings for each challenge, but all of them are easy. Remember the cone challenges in PGR2? They could take many attempts, often over several days, to crack the Platinum kudos requirement. In PGR3 I got Plats in every cone challenge at the first attempt, almost without exception.
Also the online play is not as productive as before, thanks to the online career mode. This encourages people new to online play to drive like they would drive against AI, which is to say ram people out of the way with scant regard for protocol. It makes playing online a chore, not something to be enjoyed.
Finally, the handling of the cars feels remarkably similar throughout. There is little variation between the most and least powerful cars in the game. Remember the F40 from PGR2 vs the Mini Cooper? There is no range like this in the third installment. And, even though the F40 (for example) is in 3, it feels like every other car in the game.
It looks absolutely stunning though, and this makes up for all the above because PGR3 is the sort of game that people who don't like car games buy...to show off their next-gen console to their mates.
vc @ Dec 28th 2005 6:56AM
Thanks for all the comments, ya'll.
I know why the counter resets. Take a look at the Starcraft lobby system for an example of a lobby done right.
As for the crashes: the Xbox 360 doesn't crash on any other game. Just PGR3 in multiplayer mode. It's just not a stable implementation.
JPRacer @ Dec 28th 2005 7:56AM
What? You turned the engine sounds down to hear the music?!? I turned the music off to hear the engine sounds. I do that in all racing games.
You're not a true racing fan, but it's ok.
Chris @ Dec 28th 2005 8:53AM
There are a couple flaws in this review. For one, you can't blame bizarre for crashes on your system with this game. It's more likely a hardware issue. I've played many many hours on multiple games, mostly PGR3 and online and have not had one crash. As many here have already said.
And second, I think the timer resetting to 30 seconds id be design, not a bug. If you notice as soon as the room is full it resets to 5 seconds. If the room isn't full it is giving enough time for it to fill up. Out of a few hundred online races I've only had one where I had to wait too long for the room to fill and game to start.
Other than those, I agree with everything. Thanks!
eric @ Dec 28th 2005 9:23AM
My friend has this game, and one of the best looking games I've seen. He's been obsessed with playing it since launch. When I asked about the game crashing, he said he's never experienced that.
Mike @ Dec 28th 2005 9:53AM
I'm so-so happy with it, I'd give it 6.5/10.
Yes, it does crash (almost always on Live), and yes the menus are are HD but the rest of the game is blown up.
It's still a decent driving game though.
Thomas Crymes @ Dec 28th 2005 10:41AM
Rymix, you must be a racing God if you are getting plats on the first try. Good for you.
However, I have to question the accuracy of your words, because the cars clearly behave very differently. Some of the cars have a lot of torque and are hard to keep on the tracks, while others, like the Lambos seem to be rock solid handling wise. I'm glad I can't drive an 85 Hyundai. The developers stated that all cars had to go at least 170 mph.
I can't fathom why people would complain about the graphics. I have never seen a more beautiful racing game. Try enjoying entertainment for a change instead of looking to hate on everything.
I'd like to see more car specific races on-line. Seems like if you don't pick the Ferrari F50 GT, you have no shot against a competent driver.
jon from vancouver @ Dec 28th 2005 10:44AM
I'm sorry but I did not like this game at all, good thing I rented it. I know many people that did not like it either. After playing NFS and RR6, all the drifting and cop chases, this game was like um, a, slow man. It looks beautiful, but if you're into arcade style racing and like some realism in your car crashes, this is not the game for you. The main thing I hated was the load times, and that was the final straw. Restarts had load times too, not like the other racing games I mentioned. PGR3 just did not do anything for me except want to take the game back asap to the rental store. It also made a hell of a lot of noise spinning in my drive more than any game I've played. I really had a bad experience with the game, and I was disappointed since I was a fan of PGR 1 and 2. Maybe next time.
Nossy @ Dec 28th 2005 11:00AM
Solid review. I still haven't experience a crash even on Live. Even after running the system for 10 straight hours, it's still fine. Crashes shouldn't be factor into the review because it doesn't exists everywhere. But yeah, the game itself is as good as the car in the game. Yes the load time is quite annoying especially when you're just doing the Kudos challenge which last 15 seconds or less. And the game is not really short unless you play on Easy level. It'll take about 8-10 hours to finish the game on Medium difficult level. It is way easy to grab expensive cars even before completing the game. I don't think it's a problem because it'll take you some time to master the control of some cars. The F50 GT is umm a bit difficult to control. Overall I think the game is worth the $50 that I paid for. And like joystiq put it, it's an easy game to jump into, but a difficult game to master.
So why don't Joystiq do a review which include playing on LIVE? It points out some problems on it, but it doesn't elaborate on the experience which Live brings to the game. Playing PGR3 on Live IS part of the game. I would point out that it sucks when players ram you from behind while drifting around a tight turn. Where's the racing etiquette? It also sucks that EVERYBODY likes the F50 GT. It should have class specific races as well. I mean there is a class system in the game.
febxbox360 @ Dec 28th 2005 11:07AM
I love the game. It's a real blast and shows off the 360. As for game crashes, my cooling fan kicks into high gear while playing. You may be experiencing overheating rather than software glitches.
On the topic of car crashes, I do have a criticism regarding this review and others. No damage modeling? - False. My cars show dings, dents, and scrapes. While it's not possible to destroy the car, the cars do reflect cosmetic damage and minor deformations.
Sidebar:
GTR on the PC is the benchmark for realistic damage modeling. Body panels would fly off realistically revealing highly detailed bits underneath, bent rims = flat tires, wheels would fly off, smoke would obscure vision. While very realistic, you quickly found yourself out of the race if you had an off-track excursion. Incidentally, the game also included the "innovative" in car view found in PGR3.
Jared @ Dec 28th 2005 11:46AM
Just wanted to chime in and say that the game lock ups while viewing others gamertags is NOT a hardware problem. IGN mentioned they had they same problem and I get it all the time. Many people I've talked to in the game said they have the same problem as well.
Pixelantes Anonymous @ Dec 28th 2005 1:26PM
I've been playing PGR3 on my XBox 360 exclusively (if you don't count XBL Arcade titles...too much Hexic), and while I think it's a great game, as a racing game fanatic, Forza Motorsport still comes on top overall.
Couple of reasons for that:
PGR3 Solo Career is way too easy. I got me a F50 GT in less than a day and it usually doesn't take me more than one try to get a gold medal even if the track is unfamiliar to me. Forza Motorsport had a much more natural progression curve, and it really felt satisfying going up a rank in Forza. Not so in PGR3, it's just another number.
PGR3 is gorgeous, but only if you have HDTV. I don't, so the jump from Forza on the XBox to PGR3 on the 360 is not big enough.
PGR3's driving model feels like you're driving a toy car compared to Forza. Cars slide way too much and the way they turn feels too much like an arcade game than a real car.
That all being said, I'm completely addicted to PGR3, and the few negative aspects are outweighed by everything that's great about the game. It's just not The Racing Game (tm) for me. Forza is.
brett @ Dec 29th 2005 2:20PM
I have a weird problem with PGR3 and wondering if anyone else has it.. I have had 3 copies of it now, and my Xbox has scratched every one. It works for a few hours, then gives me a "this disc is unreadable" error. I look at the disc, and sure enough it has small scratches where before it was perfectly smooth. 3 different copies of the game. The Xbox works fine with every other game I've tried - CoD, Gun, FIFA, PDZ, Amped, etc. WTF?

"None of the drivers I've asked to play the game can complete the Nurburgring challenges at either difficulty."
lol, that makes me feel a hell of a lot better! I have only completed a few at hardcore difficulty. Some hardcore, and hard settings are very very close to impossible. Like the cone challenges. Those really piss me off. Novice might be 300 Kudos, easy 750, and medium 1,300. But hard jumps that number up to an insane number, something like 6,000! And HOLY SH*T!! Hardcore?, about 40,000 f**king kudos!!!!! I don't care what anyone says, THAT is impossible. But even if it wasn't impossible, the scale from novice to hardcore is VERY f**ked up on the cone challenge!
oh yeah, and mine only crashed once, but I was done playing anyway lol.
