I would say both the "all the time MTV "it's so coooueell -Frodo"" 360 campaign (check out geekonstun) and everything that went with it was rather huge, as was the PSP "lets tantalise them for months upon months with our uber-cool anti-ipod-you-can't-have-it-yet campaign, much more so than the "lets hype it up by saying nothing, not a thing about what we're tinckering at for 5 months and save money" campaign Nintendo employed. Heck, we paid more attention to a Japanese show Nintendo didn't even really attend then the giant kablooie E3 and its pre-shows are. Dollar for dollar, I'd say Nintendo had the best PR in the Biz, considering they were approching infinite interest generated per marketing investment. I guess you would call that uber-hype, but at least the flames started by Nintendo PR burnt in the souls of fanboys rather than in the souls of Microsoft mousketeers, err..marketeers. Pardon me, Microsoft PR peeps have no souls.

I get more cynical every day.

Yep....I was starting to think that the 2K series was pulling ahead of Madden until that happened. And it sucks because Madden '06 for the Xbox 360 was terrible...and there is no substitute for it (like the basketball series)....you're stuck with that or nothing.

"Granted, arguably nothing was hyped more than the free-style controller"

Granted, arguably?

Is this an intentional oxymoron?

The controller wasn't hyped nearly as much as the 360. In fact the controller wasn't hyped at all. Yes, there was a huge amount of interest, but not because it was hyped. The interest was huge because unlike the 360, the revolution actually fills an existing desire for next gen gameplay whereas the 360 attempts to create a desire to justify its rushed existence.

As for the controller hype, where was the origenrevolution site? Where was the burning man revolution orgy in the desert? MS hyped the 360 to holy hell, then they realized how much money they were losing building the thing in the current fab routines so they cut production and pissed everyone off. Nintendo has quietly hinted at the revolution with very little hype. Hell, they even admitted it won't be as powerful as the other two consoles. Not very "hypey" if you ask me. And don't start with the "No hype is just another form of hype", crap, please. Its just lame.

Now, all that being said, Nintendo will start up their hype machine shortly before E3 and then at E3 and after they will probably hype as much as they can, which will still likely be less than Microsoft just because they are all about the MTV style hype the 15 year old crowd digs these days.

I wasn't part of this poll but I would have picked "playing games and having fun" too. The Rev controller definitely sparked my interest and I really hope it plays out well for Nintendo, but my most memorable moment of 2005 happened all the way back in January with Resident Evil 4. It's simply one of the best games I've played in a long time.

The Rev controller will be huge. People don't get it until I physically show them how it will work. Then they go "Oooohhh", and then they get it.

The winner of the poll proves the point that new tech, fps, and bells and whistles are great, but it's the games that count. Peace.
