Sequels we actually wish for
We have all
lamented about sequels before - all the Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats and Tony Hawks
that offer nothing new to the series but still sell decently because of brand name. What about the games that never got
a second chance? Many of us have longed for an updated Final Fantasy VII, but do you remember Nights Into
Dreams?RetroGaming has compiled a list of 10 games that were so good (or potentially good) that they deserve the sequel treatment. From the oft-attempted Chrono Trigger to the oft-rumored Kid Icarus to even American McGee's Alice (which is now in development as a film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar).
Maybe Beyond Good & Evil is a tad too new for the list, but that game deserves all the credit it can get. What are some games you long to see remade, updated, or given a sequel?
[Thanks, Nick]

nights was awesome...I would also like to see new panzer dragon and diablo 3..

I would love to see another sequel to afterburner. I think a next-gen version could work on any of the new systems, the 360 with online dogfights, the revolution with the new controller or the ps3 with better graphics (maybe).

Uh... are we asking for remakes or sequels? Because Chrono Trigger already has a sequel - it's called Chrono Cross, and it's a great game. This guy says he "considers it a spinoff at best" - well, too bad, because Square considers it a sequel, along with the rest of the civilized world. Is FF8 a "spinoff" of FF7? Is Grandia II a "spinoff" of Grandia? No, it's a freakin' sequel. The fact that these games don't have all the same characters as the first in the series means nothing.
And how can you argue for a sequel to Sonic CD? This is really the same thing. There have been so many Sonic platformers since then, I don't really understand what this guy even considers a sequel. Again, it sounds to me like what he wants is a remake, not a sequel. That is not the same thing.

although its probably unlikely since the Xbox sequel didn't sell so well, but DAMN wouldn't Panzer Dragoon look nice on 360 or PS3?
Also, I'd like to see a next-gen Ecco the Dolphin...another example where the 3D is probably just now here to do it justice...

A pretty good list. Although two of the games on the list already had sequels and he dismisses them both - I guess if you don't like the sequel you can just ignore it, eh? Wow, the power that game "journalists" wield when they write their articles.
Having played through both Chrono Cross and Advanced Guardian Heroes, I could say that both did an OK job continuing story and plot elements from the original. Although Advanced Guardian Heroes sure did lack in terms of overall play-time.

I want to see another Madden! But in all seriousness ... I think in addition to seeing some games back for sequels, I would also like to see some genres revisited for popular titles. I would love to see a new Prince of Persia game in 2D on the PC, just like the old Mac version I used to play long ago.

Beyond Good & Evil may very well be getting the sequel treatment. A dutch magazine interviewed Michel Ancel (the creator of BG&E) and he stated they had the pre-production in the works before the King Kong contract fell in their laps and would be returning to it post launch.

These games are all a bit too popular. I want sequels to some of the gems that never did well enough to warrant one.
I agree with almost every game on that list myself, but I sequels to stuff like "Metal Warriors", "Zombies ate my Neighbors", "Cubivore", "Blast Corps", "Bangai-O", "Earthbound" (though it has been rumored countless times and may actually come out.)
Tyrian deserves a sequel, there were failed attempts on a GBC and GBA port, its a shame none of them managed to come out...
How about an update to the Turrican games? Factor 5 doesn't really have anything else to do these days.
BatzRadio @ Jan 2nd 2006 7:39PM
Personally?
Gimme a new River City Ransom game, only 3-D and with the virtual sandbox thing going on. Add to this a generous amount of usable objects (vaulting off lampposts into dropkicks, throwing baddies through store windows, the ol' garbage-can-over-the-head). And even though it's not fashionable, the game would need cel-shaded graphics to be true to the Kunio levity.
If Million could give me that I'd be dying a happy man.

Good list, but my list would be:
-Earthbound (announced, doubtful it'll leave Japan though)
-Comix Zone
-Cool Spot
-NiGHTs
-Zombies Ate My Neighboors
-Kid Icarus
-Vectorman
-Sam and Max (announced)

Vagrant Story!
I demand further stories of the wanderer, the vagrant.

I m pleased that NiGHTS into dreams... has not fallen into complete obscurity. Good to know other people still push for some sort of NiGHTS lovin'.

I disregrad that list completely because they did not mention starcraft 2, which is much mroe needed (and would sell way more $) then anything else produced on that list (except maybe another chrono Trigger game)
Jago @ Jan 3rd 2006 12:18AM
Ok...but someone please tell me what is so "special" about NiGHTS? I have the game (plus the Christmas version) plus the 3D controller and it doesn't seem like anything special.
For a game (and Crash Bandicoot) that was sorta supposed to be the competitor to Super Mario 64...they both pailed in comparison.

SEGA RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! BEST RACEING GAME EVER!!!!
Exo @ Jan 3rd 2006 3:29AM
Didnt nintendo already say that they were working on a new Kid Icarus? Im pretty sure Iwata or Miyamato said something.
I really want a Beyond Good and Evil sequel though.
ill trooper @ Jan 3rd 2006 3:39AM
The Sega Saturn's 'Burning Rangers' was a cool concept, and I liked how someone mentioned 'Blast Corps' for the N64...
Both of those games could really use a 'next-gen' treatment.
Rally games seem to have fallen out of favor these days, with companies putting 'tuner' games in their place - I love 'Need For Speed Underground' but I also miss the PS2 Firewire-LAN Gran Tourismo 3 Rally races we used to have at my apartment.
Also, on the 'zone-out' tip, an HD sequel to the PS1's 'Aquanaut's Holiday' or maybe some 'next-gen' version of a fishing game, not 'extreme fishing' with loud music and a timer, but some mellow thing where you can get lost for an hour or so fishing on some HD lake with amazing lighting and atmosphere.
For party gamers, let's go to the original for a sequel: import-only PS1 'BISHI-BASHI' (http://212.38.95.19/bishibashi/games.htm) showed Nintendo the blueprint on how to make 'Mario Party' fun with hundreds of 5-10 second multiplayer-mahem silly games of skill or rhythm.
Too many multiplayer FPS's with 'Capture the Flag' mode right now!
To the game developers, I quote Beastie Boys' AdRock from 'Pass the Mic:'
"Whatchu gonna say that I don't know already?"
bearattack79 @ Jan 3rd 2006 4:06AM
Yes a next gen fishing, but it has to be a graphics powerhouse. Shimmering lakes, random animal shightings, have a photo mode with imbedded achivments. Like a black bear photo worth 50 points, a wolf 100 points and so on, all while fishing. "PHOTOREALISTIC FISHING" I live in Northern Ontario Canada and ice fishing is too cold, so this would be a nice game while I wait for the lakes to thaw.
redx @ Jan 3rd 2006 8:11AM
man it a good list but lat's us do what we want systematicly first we will keep waiting for the remake of the finalfantasy than we will see who's next one hand untill all gamesers have what they want ????
notrealdan @ Jan 3rd 2006 10:19AM
I need a sequel to Night Trap! Are there any other games out there where you lose if you watch the whole intro?
But seriously, I can't wait for Dreamfall (The Longest Journey 2) and would likely kill for another Grim Fandango!
Arturo Rocha Buitron @ Jan 3rd 2006 10:22AM
Definitely Vagrant Story should get a sequel... The best game no one played...
recklessgemini @ Jan 3rd 2006 5:18PM
Chrono Cross was no where near as good as Chrono Trigger. I still think they should've used Akira Toriyama for the sequels character design. Square-enix should give Level-5 the job of remaking Chrono Trigger. Now that'd be awesome.

lessee.....plpayed a game on a PSX demo disc, Japanese and untranslated, a cooking game kinda like WarioWarez, with the DualShock, twiddle the stick to wash dishes, chop veggies, and hand out change.
BALLZ, but given the state of most 3D hardware, seems a little redundant
Eternal Champions...had a sequel on Sega CD, but something was planned for Saturn.
Gunstar Heroes
Popful Mail
WeaponLord...a VERY strategic 2D weapon fighter with artwork by Simon Bisley
Fighter's Destiny...another highly strategy-based fighter. For those unfamiliar, the selling pitch was the point system - 1 for timeout, 2 for a throw, 4 for supers.
ABUSE, or should we not put our feet through Van Gogh's?
Hey, I tried........
