Oh man, mmorpg slang. Half the reason why I never grouped in WoW was because I didn't feel like having my brain explode trying to decode insightful, well-written messages like "LFG 4 BGT HP PLZ NO BBD OR PCP"

I proudly admit to having used "aggro" in everyday conversation. Context: "Will you aggro the dog? She's bothering me."

I believe that this sort of language migration is natural, and will happen eventually.

Certainly, there is something to be said for standardized grammar, spelling, etc. And the basic rule is common useage. When something becomes common enough in useage, we put it in the dictionary. This is not like the French, who are fascist in their approach to linguistic integrity. You can't have new French words, even when you need them. You must describe everything in terms of existing words, at least in formal language.

Net slang in general is what has kept me so silent online. I hope to whatever gods there are that it never succeeds in invading the real world.

I´ve skipped Everquest, World of Warcraft, and, really, every other Online RPG out there because of the slang, and I can hardly even stand to play first-person shooters online. Whenever I´m online, whether in a game, a forum, or a chatroom, I always take the time to type out what I´m saying instead of resorting to horrendous abbreviations and misspellings.

I despise leetspeak and internet acronyms. It's like they're thinking, "it's a good think I typed 'LOL' instead of 'that's funny' because now I can spend the extra four tenths of a second I saved masterbating longer tonight."

I think it's unavoidable in popular games because the average person likes to write like that. I've always been fascinated by Puzzle Pirates because they seem to have dodged all the retarded writing nonsense somehow. People playing it actually want to role play. Is it that there's a lack of urgency inherant in the gameplay of Puzzle Pirates? If so, then they need to program that same lack into WoW to stop the "LFG" and "heal plz" requests.

this isnt unique to games. there are 13 year old girls all over the nation typing(or texting) lol, l8r, b4, ect. its still annoying, but we probobly need to accept that some of this will creep into the bigger lexicon.

I 2nd that, #11.

This sort of thing didn't happen due to online gaming, its the online culture itself.

I mean, its so easy to type lol rather then "laughing out loud" or "Hey, that's funny" or rofl for "Rolling on the floor laughing"

Its human nature to simply take the easy road out of any situation, this is a reflection of that nature (online).

You Know, with all the nifty commands you can type into a text line in an MMO, why not create some code for expandable text. For example, when you type LFG, it says "looking for group"

and when you type plz, it shows "please" (that one would be nice)

Then those of us who are annoyed by that stuff won't have to see it, and those people who want to type like that can.

I'm amazed at how reluctant the readers of joystiq are towards internet slang. Being a member of totse.com for about 3 years now has had me pretty much accept it and it does not bother me anymore.

I mean, the way we communicate is a part of internet culture that makes up the net and it's community as a whole you know?Being all anti-1337 is just stupid. There's more things to hate out there than seeing "1337m0fo" as a name on Counterstrike.

Puzzle Pirates seems to win out (mostly) over the l33t speak for two reasons; it's easy(ish) to speak Piratey; everyone knows how to Arr or Ahoy!, and secondly, we do what Sean #15 suggests a lot; if you type 'lol' it mogrifies it to 'Player laughs', 'omg' -> 'Billions of blistering blue barnacles!', 'asl' -> 'From whence do ye hail and how many years are upon ye?', and so forth. It makes a big, big difference! Har!
