"Best Interactive Video Game" will be a
special category in the 53rd annual Hugo Awards, one of the most prestigious awards for science fiction. They explain,
"Games are not just something that some science fiction fans do. We believe that interactive video games have
become an important part of the tapestry that is science fiction. And for that reason, we have decided to include
them among the Hugo Categories for the first time." This does not mean they will remain a category beyond this
year: "the category -- and whether to add one or not -- is at the discretion of that year's committee and it's
treated exactly like one of the annual categories."While they make some exaggerated claims like the classic, "As an industry, it outsells Hollywood" (Hollywood box office, sure, but Hollywood makes far more money on DVD sales than they do on ticket sales) it is nevertheless clear that there is overlap in their audiences. Look at the popularity of the Halo universe and its derivative novels, or the involvement of Hugo award winning novelist Orson Scott Card in the disappointing Advent Rising.
