Honestly, I had a hard time believing this in the first place. It'd require a good bit of work on each game to take be able to process the data from the new controller.

Not to be harsh, but did anyone really think Nintendo would spend time to go back and add a feature that would most likely produce small, if any profit?

the writers probably played the same tech demos as everyone else did.. why would nintendo give such a huge scoop to national geographic kids of all publications? :P

Yes what that guy said

Yeah I was thinking they just saw the tech demo everyone else saw.Even reading the story made me think that too.I'm getting one anyway ,so i'm already sold.

Dont overestimate how the interactivity would work:

When they say use the controller to swing your sword what they mean is any rapid side to side motion with the controller will play the 1 swing animation in the game.

I think you'r really expecting too much if you think the controller is going to be sensative enough to recognize more than a jarring motion in several different directions. If you think your really going to wield and parry blows with your sword and have that displayed accuratley then your expecting too much.

Nintendo has sold millions of consoles already, and they're not even available for pre-sale... I am so looking forward to this. It makes me want to go out and buy innovative DS games like Elektroplankton (on sale at Target Tuesday, January 10th, according to their website) just to hold me over!

I sold my Xbox360 and bought a Nintendo DS and i can honestly say i'm happier with the purchase than i was with the 360 and i'm personally having more fun with it.Also my kid plays Nintendogs on it and the wife plays a number of games on the DS ,So for my situation it was a better purchase and i can't wait for the Evolution to come out no matter how the controller turns out.

How would you know? Do you have some inside knowledge that the rest of the world doesn't have? Why not wait instead of spreading false information that you can't back up.

I have used gyroscopic devices before, such as mice. With those devices you need to make very controlled deliberate moves, flailing around as one might while waving a sword would not allow the gyros to function properly.

Look, I'm conjecturing cause thats what we do here on blogs...see it lets us think about thing that have not yet happened. When I get paid for reporting and people rely on me for accuracy then ill give a shit about your complaints.

Anyways, you need to tone down your expectations for this controller, just like next gen graphics, this is going to fall far short of your expectations. Will it still be fun, probably, to some degree, some implementations better than others, but overall your expecting too much. This is my opinion based on previously released devices of the same nature.

Just wanted to add a little something to my last comment...

I've used a sword controller at the GDC , where the sowrds movements were actually modeled through a gyroscopic device. It is possible to do this, but its not very acurate. In order to use it you had to be very deliberate with your movements, its not as accurate as you would think. Could Nintendo have taken this tech and improved it? No doubt. I just dont think its going to perform as well as everyone expects.

My comments were primarily based on playing old games with the new controller, although they definately extend to some degree to new properties.

ugggg, I better get a star for setting you all straight.........*breathhhhh*...... ahhhh......WHY THE HECK DOES EVERYONE THINK THAT THE GYROSCOPIC RUMORS PERTAIN TO THE SENSING OF MOVEMENT?!?! IT BOGGLES MY MIND!! AAAAHHHH!!

Nintendo said like, a year ago that theres two sensors on each side of the TV that will detect the position/orientation/direction of the controller. The gyroscopic RUMORS say that gyroscopes could prevent movement in a direction, like if it was used like a sword, then when you swing and hit a rock in the game, the controller will stop in the air too, by use of unbalenced gyrosopes.

Anyway, It all depends on how the game makers want the game to be controlled...

Im personally wanting one of those one games for the Revolution, that one game with the twisted wire and you have to guide a metal ring through it without touching the wire....that would be AWESOME!, and also a fly swatting game...man, that would be the funnest game ever, no matter how simple. yeahhhhh

Bingo...you were playing OLD games with a NEW controller. You were playing games with a device that wasn't specifically designed for it. Now play a game with a device it was designed to use and it will work much more efficiently.

Instead of straight out saying that it won't work why not wait on saying any comments about how it will work until you actually try it out. Saying it won't work b/c a mouse or a sword with a gyroscopic device didn't is like saying a Ford Pinto and a Ferarri drive the same b/c they are both cars.

To Shagi:

When has Nintendo ever released something that didn't work well? Everything they've ever released has met, or exceeded my expectations. I don't think the Revolution will be any different.

How about you think about what he said? All he said is that it is unlikely for Nintendo to take Revolution support all the way in terms of control. Do you REALLY think you'd be able to perform the same moves on a Gamecube game as you would on a Revolution game? We'd be lucky if there was *some* support for the new controller in the game, but there's no way they'd go into rewriting code to enable full support.

Like he said, a slash from the controller would do what the normal sword swing would in the game. That's if we get any support at all.

Again...what are you basing that on? This is the first time something like this has been used to this extent. Just b/c something hasn't worked in the past doesn't mean it won't ever work. For all we know technology could actually be good enough for the remote setup to fully work.

If you are gonna play a Gamecube game on the Revo, you can use standard Gamecube or Wavebird controller with the system...or have you forgotten about that?

shagi & 18:

you're assuming you understand gyros, do you? from your words i doubt it. i work in electronics and am fairy familier with gyros, you should learn how gyros works - THEN learn how gyros are made TODAY. gyros today are surface mount specialty ic's, that are VERY precise, they're like that because of the demands the intended industry requires (marine, avionics) - porting them over to another industry (games) has benefits:1)the devlopment is already paid for by someone else - you just tweak it to suit your specific needs 2)coming from an industry with higher regulations regarding safety, the accuarcy of the product is going to be far superior today than it would have been, even 2 years ago.

bottom line - wait - after you've played with real software on a real revolution - then spout off at the mouth.

It's to be noted that it doesn't use gyros to sense movement in 3 dimensional space. It uses a sensor bar and triangulation. That means it will be able to tell, through the use of fairly simple calculus, what direction you moved the controller in, how far you moved the controller, and how fast you moved the controller. Assuming a fast enough processor, it will be able to make these calculations in real-time with a delay that probably won't be noticeable to human perception. In fact, as far as I can determine, Nintendo has never said the controller was based on gyroscopes, just that it used them, they never said specifically what it used the gyroscopes for, but they were very clear that movement detection was dependent on the sensor bar.

RE:#19's comments-You mention the Wavebird or GC controller can be used on the REV. to play GC games, BUT can these aforesaid controllers also be used in lieu of the numb chuk controller to play future next-gen games? Also is there actually going to be a "shell controller"or is this just spec? I already have a 360 and am thinking of getting a REV. Can anybody enlighten me on these queries; I want to avoid using numb chuk if poss.

to Maximoisgood ObVIOUSLY THERes gonna be a shell but i dont know if it will be compatibe with GC games. most probably it will work.

I just wanted to say i hope that the rev controller is wired/wireless for example like all this gen controllers it is wired but the wire could be pulled off the rev contoller when the controller is fully charged. It would be idiotic for the wire to be attached to the front of the controller it would be better to attach it at the back

There will be a shell accessory for the Revo remote...Nintendo stated that there would be but (I believe) they were unsure if it would be packed in with the system or an extra accessory.
