Parent prefers kid dabbling in coke over playing video games
The latest edition of the
UK publication, Independent on Sunday, ran an article entitled, "Cannabis: Can it really drive you
mad?" The article links pot smoking to wasted afternoons "hooked to the escapist antics of PlayStation
games." Where would
they get an idea like that?In the article, Roxanne Richardson, soon-to-be mother of two, contends, "I'd rather my son take a more proactive, less habitual drug like cocaine, than lock himself away and play video games. It's so lazy. At least with pills and coke you're out and about doing something." Alas, a witty remark escapes us...

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Oh man, those are some serious crack babies. I don't even want to imagine what's she's done to her nasty, 35 year old, white trash body. Let alone while she was pregnant with kids ....
Well lady, with all hope they'll be huffing paint and making bath tub meth in no time! Way cheaper than sniffing cocaine and popping E's.
Roxanne Richardson, what a piece of shit.
ErbilT @ Jan 10th 2006 6:29PM
I'm sorry, but her response was actually pretty funny.
Devil's Advocate @ Jan 10th 2006 6:30PM
Maybe this is a satirical piece on a satire. Ever thought of that?
gmrc @ Jan 10th 2006 6:54PM
This article isn't satire, it's just noise.
Andrew @ Jan 10th 2006 6:54PM
coke, less habitual?
ummm...
bd @ Jan 10th 2006 6:55PM
Well, the hell if I'm gonna find out if this is a satire or not, but if it isn't, this lady shouldn't have been permitted to have children in the first place.
Nate @ Jan 10th 2006 7:01PM
Damn, I'm surprised that article didn't mention that weed and video games are two of Satan's five creations....
Along with rap music, rated R movies, and Pauly Shore.
Derick @ Jan 10th 2006 7:13PM
If video games are lazy, what is reading? Keep the kids away from those completely non-interactive books!
And how is cocaine a better addiction than video games? Especially when one is illegal, costs tons of money, can lead to rape, and death (in worst case scenarios) and gets money to....like the worst people in the world.

In all seriousness though, there's a good chance my good friend, Sir Natural Selection, will be seeing her soon.

Please get off your high horse.

You know, video games are fun and everything, but to say that one sort of addiction is better than another is, well, kinda foolish. But hey, whatever makes you feel better about yourselves I suppose...
Oshi @ Jan 10th 2006 9:29PM
Sweet. Now she can buy her kids some blow for their birthdays instead of that video game they want.
Go Mom go.

i want that mom!!!
c.Lake @ Jan 10th 2006 10:25PM
I've heard some dumb-ass statements in my life, but.... what the f_ck? A mother WANTs her children to take cocane and pop pills over playing video games? That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard.
Yes, video games can be addictive, but you get your kids to stop playing by taking the carriage out of the console and kicking their asses outside to play. That's what my mother did. It's called parenting.

jesus christ shut the fuck up, addiction means shit and i dont give a fuck what your addicted to (unless mabye its strong opiates...i feel your pain). if addiction were to be the scourage of human existence we would have died out a long time ago from people addicted to everything form sex to churning butter!

To #16:
Yep, you've got it. Doing cocaine as an addiction is *JUST AS BAD* as playing video games. I mean, coke shatters your body and destroys your brain and kills you, and video games just make you sit slack jawed in front of the TV. I guess they'll both end up with you dying from an overdose, I mean, I play so much Guild Wars that I should be falling out of my chair and foaming at the mouth any second.
Glad there are people like you on this world to remind me that *yes* there are people stupider than dirt.
Louis @ Jan 11th 2006 12:11AM
(To fat_bunnies)
...
I'm sorry, are you actually standing up for cocaine?
I mean, I could understand your arguement to say that video games are addictive (and, yes people, just like any other enjoyable acctive or substance, can be addictive (Ever hear of Evercrack? :P )).
But it seems, to me anyway, that you're actually agreeing that cocaine addiction is better then video game addiction.
Sure, neither are good for your health, and cocaine may not have strong damage to your body, unlike some other drugs.
But, I for one, who rather have my child addicted to video games, which actually involves the brain in more then sitmulating it, then doing coke, which could lead to bloody noses, and nobody likes those.
But still, video game

To 23: (From your link)
LONG-TERM USE:
Heavy, regular use of cocaine is known to cause restlessness, anxiety, hyperexcitability, paranoia, irritability, insomnia, weight loss, and a variety of other less acute psychological symptoms. Insufflation of any substance can lead to damaging the cartiledge and mucosa in the nose, eventually leading to a hole in the septum (the soft structure separating the nostils). If injected, cocaine use can lead to a wide variety of problems including life-threatening infections, shared needle-related blood diseases, etc.
*NICE*. Such a safe drug. I mean, I played Guitar Hero for 5 hours today and WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT, my nose cartilage disappeared. Oh, and i'm irritable and have lost weight, and am anxious, restless, hyperexcitable.
But hey, I'm not stopping *YOU* from doing coke, for all intents and purposes, I hope you suck down an 8-ball every few hours until you rid the world of yourself. I'm sure we'd be better of without someone who is defending the use of cocaine.
n1ckn4m3 @ Jan 11th 2006 1:05AM
Oh, and also,
"With high doses may exhibit a pattern of psychosis with confused and disorganized behavior, irritability, fear, paranoia, hallucinations, may become extremely antisocial and aggressive"
Most gamers I know exhibit psychosis. Antisocial I can agree with, but aggressive? Not so much.
BTW, thanks for calling me fuckface. I hadn't heard that one since 5th grade. I almost spewed my Dew across the keyboard. Keep up the good work.
brit @ Jan 11th 2006 5:56AM
The piece was actually about cannabis, not videogames, and all this talk about cannabis causing psychosis. Apparently tests have shown that kids who start smoking cannabis before they're 18 are more prone to schizophrenia in later life. The mother was saying that her son was an habitual cannabis user who preferred spent all of this time inside playing videogames. She was so frustrated at the way cannabis had stopped his life in its tracks that she said the above quote. She wasn't actually slamming videogames. Maybe she's scared he'll end up like the poor souls in Asia who died after playing online for too long a stretch...
Acceptable Risk @ Jan 11th 2006 8:06AM
I think everyone is taking this out of context. The woman isn't pitting games vs. cocaine she's comparing cannabis to cocaine. She says, rather than have her son smoke weed then sit around playing videogames all day she'd rather him do cocaine or another stimulant so at least he's active when he's high. It's not that she wants him to be on cocaine, she means that if he has to be on a drug, she'd prefer it not be cannabis.
Why this is making the rounds on the gaming news scene, I don't know. It has little to nothing to do with games directly.
Blizz419 @ Jan 11th 2006 9:44AM
You cant really blame Marijuana for being lazy playing video games all the time and being lazy, there are obviously other problemas at hand, i smoke weed and have non of these problems i have 2 jobs and work 7 days a week, i have manny other friends who smoke weed as well without any of these problems, also i have seen manny negative effects of friends who started using coke like they stop hanging out with there normal friends and start hanging out with more coke heads instead which tend to be alot more shady, ive seen holes in septums big enough to stick there pinky finger through which lead those individuals to start free basing and using crack, plus addictiveness of coke so much more than marijuana ive never seen anyone put them selves in financial jeopardy from buying to much weed, but i have seen it happen with coke users, marijuana is only mentally addictive not physically, were as cocaine is both physically and mentally addictive.
Guy @ Jan 11th 2006 11:10AM
This has got to be the most retarded woman in the world. Something tells me these kids won't survive too long. I can just see it now: "Harold NO! Don't sit on the train platform, it's filthy. Sit on the tracks."
Levi @ Jan 11th 2006 12:47PM
Cocaine...is one helluva drug
Spencer Hauflaire @ Jan 11th 2006 1:16PM
It is pretty unfortunate that such an obviously ignorant phrase can make even us gamers start swearing at each other. I'm pretty sure that we could all agree that this woman made one of the dumbest comments this side of George Bush, give it a good chuckle, and go play some Shadow of the Colossus. Sounds good.

I like the part where she states at least with pills and coke you're out doing something. Even if this is satire its done in poor taste.
That mother is going to eat her words when her kid Overdoses and winds up a vegetable in some nursing home.....the sweet irony of it all =D
