Ubisoft: Turtle Power!

Cowabunga, dudes! Ubisoft today garnered an exclusive license agreement to develop and publish video games based on the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles CG film. The TMNT games have long been made by Konami, but their last 3 installments of the series have received rather poor reviews by game critics. In their defense, Konami did make the smash-hit Turtles in Time for the SNES, but in recent years their success with the franchise has waned.

According to the press release, the movie is based on the "original comic-book series and will be grittier than the previous live action pictures" while somehow retaining a PG rating. Both the upcoming movie and video game are expected to be released in early 2007.

Another cheesy ninja turtle movie? Ugh...

Seeing as King Kong kept pretty serious and somewhat violent at a PG rating, I'm guessing TMNT can keep on pretty good track. They just can't swear like they did in the comic ...

hmmm...can we say " 10 years too late" ?...

The original TMNT series is freaking awesome. They all had red bands, not colored ones. It was an indie black and white comic. They also swore a lot, and the storyline was pretty grim. The TMNT you saw with all the toys and movies and whatnot was a kiddified version of the TMNT franchise. I'm being completely honest when I say if they are really following the original comic series, this is going to be one kick ass movie.

Yes, I'm assuming most of of know about the original Eastman and Laird comic book. That doesn't guarantee that this movie will reflect that original mood. More often than not, when people refer to the TMNT franchise, they are referring to the goofy, comic-bookesque style that made the 80's cartoon so popular among kids. I hardly think they will stray from that if the movie's PG.

Well, if they say its going to be based on the comic, I wouldnt expect anything different #5 (Ryan).

Wow how Original, Bet that's a blockbuster.What on earth are these people smoking.More remakes and Hollywood wonders why we just wait for movies to come out on DVD and rent it for a couple of bucks.

The original series was very dark, gritty and bloodly... Ah Good times. No way they could to justice to it with the G rating... so pass.

Didnt they already use this "gritty like the comic" angle for the live action movies?? Foot clan was a youth gang, remember? And its not like the comics were exactly gems either... two words: usagi yojimbo.

Anyways, the big news is not the movie, but rather the Ubi helmed game that will come out of this. I cant believe how badly konami has let that franchise deteriorate. Its such a shame, considering how fond i was/am of the original arcade game. Hopefully Ubisoft will go all out and give us the true successor to that game that we have waited so long for.
