If Nintendo is building out a service comparable to XBOX Live, what are Sony's intentions? PSP Online, SOCOM aside, is really mediocre.

Bundling classic titles with new games on 1 disc (or any other medium) could be a possibility, that's not surprising for me. Game Boy or DS emulation is tricky I think. What if some people want a DS just to play some specific games, not for the portability of the handheld console? Then those people would only need a Revolution and therefore won't buy a DS. PC connectivity could be there, but I think it will be really basic. Old games with new looks should be possible, although I'm not sure how they're going to do that technically. The last point is interesting and should allow independent developers to make creative and simple games voor de Revolution. Awesome.

How will they handle the touch-screen function of the DS?

Also, I hope they have the original games available in addition to the 'newer look,' because I'll take the regular SMB3 over the SMB All Stars version anyday.

Read the synopsis. It's pretty clear. The main patent is for a second game platform to accept games from the first game platform and run emulation to play them.

In layman's terms, it's for a portable system, either a GBA, DS or new specialized system to accept console games from the Revolution.

I doubt the revo will emulate a DS.. but wouldn't surprise me if it does emulate the old gameboy and gameboy color. Maybe even GBA, but that is still selling strong.

Also on that site but not here on joystiq:

"Last but not least, the patent application also claims that this technology is not limited to game machines created by Nintendo, but is applicable to the older and newer game machines of "other manufacturers.""

I think that pretty much confirms that old sega games will be playable on the revo

I just realized something. Maybe that mysterious panel thats covered in the front has something more than an SD card slot in it. Maybe it also has a GBA and DS slot in it for emulation! I find it highly probably as SD cards dont need an entire panel like so.

Hmm..

it wouldn't be too difficult to emulate the ds. you'd just use the remote as the stylus. I can totally see meteos being emulated and online.

You don't emulate a touch screen. The touch screen currently emulates a mouse. With the rev-controller your already have that mouse-like functionality. nuff said!

"Old games can be updated with new looks"

Could this mean skinable games?

Download new skins for the classics or draw your own!

SWEET!

This actually answers some of my questions.

The problem with Nintendo is they give you everything you need and then let you speculate the rest.

If there is a hook up for a PC. Could this mean me creating a map for a game and playing it on a revelution game?

Nintendo and Valve are fairly close to each other. It would just be a quick call away...

I think that #4, Karmakin, is right. It sounds like Nintendo will be making a portable game system that will allow you to play the downloadable NES, SNES and N64 games from the revolution on it through a new patented portable media and emulation.

My God... I was expecting to enjoy old SNES games on my Rev. But if it does Genesis too - hell, dream big, TG-16, Neo Geo, classic arcade games - then hell. I don't know anyone who loves video games who wouldn't want one.

And there already is a hardware attachment to play GBA games on the Cube, and the SNES had a Game Boy Color player too. I don't see why Nintendo would shy away from emulating those portable games out of the box for the Rev.

On #38 in the Patent website it says

"... emulate a legacy home video game system or a hand-held protable video game system different in architecture and lower in processing capability than said home video game system..."

From this statement, it looks like the Revolution's back catalog will include handheld games as well as console games. It seems that they will include the catalog of the Game Boy games and maybe, though I don't find it a good idea, the Virtual Boy.

#40 is also pretty interesting: "...the optical disk storage medium stores a plurality of different video game programs that are written for said legacy home video game system."

It looks like they're going to put multiple classic games in a single disk, probably like the Gamecube's own Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition.

#12 (oboreruhito) if the Revolution comes down as a full MAME device I'm sold.

#9 (Clu) A lot of people have mentioned the possibility of a new Mario Paint. Myself, I imagine Nintendo will release a Mario Creation Studio. Sure, with Xbox you can save music and create on your own playlist. With Mario Creation Studio, you can create your own soundtrack to games. They can also make it possible to rip soundtracks, character models and background elements from downloaded VC games, edit them in MCS, then put them back in the game, or put them in other games (sure I'd like to see Link jump on mushrooms and throw fireballs). But the Rev uses SD cards. Know what else uses SD cards? Digital cameras. Years ago, when Perfect Dark first came out, there was a rumor that they were going to allow you to use the gameboy camera to take pictures of yourself or friends, and put your face on character models in the game, but it wasn't added because some people raised the alarm that it would make the violence too real. Nothings stopping them from using similar tech in other games though, give it that personal touch.

Yeah, pipe dreams, I know, but at least it's plausible.

I have been thinking about the idea of users creating or adding content to old games for quite awhile now actually. I originally thought Nintendo might consider allowing people to download the SDK's for the engines used in a bunch of old games to allow Indy developers to create new games based on those old engines and then letting Nintendo market them and allow people to purchase them via the virtual console system.

It seems like something Nintendo might do considering the recent moves they have been making.
