By the slimmest of margins, the
U.S. gaming industry posted a record breaking year in 2005.Video game related sales in the U.S. passed the $10.5 billion mark for the first time. The milestone just eclipses a previous high of $10.3 billion set in 2002. Who to thank for pushing the industry to a banner year? The PSP apparently deserves a fair amount of any back slapping. It was the portable gaming segment that drove the overall industry to a new high, contributing its own record breaking sum of $1.4 billion to the revenue total. That's a 42% jump just for this segment of the market.
NPD analyst, Anita Frazier, said, "The real story for 2005 was the incredible expansion of portable gaming... and the introduction of the (Nintendo) DS and PSP to the market brought older gamers to the portable format."
We wonder if UMD movies are included in those figures? Either way, this is great news for the portable gaming community and the PSP.
