Why isn't there a post about Sony's nominations for the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Awards? They were the only game company to receive two nominations! This site is so biased!
Sony's vidgame division is looking good as the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences announced noms for the ninth annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
Two games from Sony Computer Entertainment America -- fantasy actioners "God of War" and "Shadow of the Colossus" -- were nominated for game of the year. Sony was the only publisher with multiple noms in the category.
Sagan @ Jan 17th 2006 2:59PM
So Saga of Ryzom did turn out well after all? I played during the beta and I never believed that they would include all the story-features which they promised. So I didn't bother to buy the full game. Did they manage to improve the game significantly?
jc @ Jan 17th 2006 3:03PM
umm, Clint you do realize this is for mmorpg of 2005... do you think everquest should be here or somthing?
Daniel D @ Jan 17th 2006 3:10PM
Clint you stupid jackass ONE PERSON wrote this and as such a he does not represent the WHOLE SITE. There is a big difference between on person and a whole site. Any member of joystiq can write on it its just that individual persons opinions. No whilst James Ransom-Wiley might be biased that doesnt make the whole site biased. Understand?
James @ Jan 17th 2006 3:14PM
Those awards are tainted this year with the lack of Capcom and other companies. The fact that games like Resident Evil 4 and Psychonauts can't compete just because those companies makes them an untrue representation of the best games of the year. Which one of the five nominees gets dropped for RE4, does Psychonauts make the list?
Shad Genki @ Jan 17th 2006 3:18PM
I'm going to play it safe and just call this shenanigans.
Jody Anthony @ Jan 17th 2006 3:29PM
Uh, why are you people getting upset that your favorite games are not included, then mentioning non mmorpgs?
The title of this post:
EVE Online voted favorite MMORPG of 2005
based on readers choice votes from where?
MMORPG.COM
Justin @ Jan 17th 2006 3:43PM
I'm going to pistol-whip the next person that says 'shenanigans'.
the antique @ Jan 17th 2006 3:50PM
It feels great to regularly visit a site with generally stupid readers.
Wreckless @ Jan 17th 2006 3:51PM
Does Eve even have 30,000 users? 30,000 votes is 0.6% of the 5 million WoW users. I'd wager my first born child that if the WoW website posted about this "vote", that the results might have come out a little different.
Sefer @ Jan 17th 2006 3:54PM
Maybe some of you missed what this post was about?
No AIA&SA and no kind of biased posting from the author, just a plain news post regarding MMORPG.com's Readers Choice Awards. :P
Onto my opinions, bear with; EVE Online finally has it's place among the stars it so brightly and elegantly pictures. I have played it from the start but have tried other games, played them for periodes but nothing have stuck to me like EVE. Graphics, gameplay, community and pure span of it's size and detail.
WoW is pretty good - but it's lacks the kind of long-run gain you have with for example EVE, and I still can't really comprehend why they choose this kind of graphical representation of such a great heritage... I understand why some left Blizzard... sadly...
Saga of Ryzom never got to me as I played the Beta. It was just my run of the mill MMORPG with cool mask people.
DND Online has some hype for me as it will focus more on a traditional Dungeons and Dragons then a grind'n'level typ of game that we see for the most on the market. Hope it will live up to it's plans.
For those who haven't see or heard of EVE, I recommend you try it out through the 14 day trail or through a friends buddy key delivery. It may or may be not worth it. But not shoot at something before one has tried it, atleast. :P
Lutraphobic @ Jan 17th 2006 4:04PM
Lmao...dude..this is for an MMORPG. Last time I checked, RE4 was NOT a MMORPG. I played both WoW, and EVE. From what I can tell, EVE would be really fun if you had time to blow, but WoW is more about instant gratifacation.
dusda @ Jan 17th 2006 4:16PM
I'm glad EVE Online is finally getting the recognition it deserves. The development that EVE has gone under since it's release is nothing short of astounding. A complete UI overhaul and six free expansions in two years is pretty impressive. The game is definitely in a league of it's own.
If anyone wants to try it out, you can get a free 14 day trial directly from CCP, the guys who made EVE, here:

hmmm, typical, you would assume wow would be much more favorite then eve. perhaps the eve people are a little more active with voting and such
Sharpizer @ Jan 17th 2006 4:47PM
The comments here tell me that Joystiq readers suffer from ADD.
Sergio @ Jan 17th 2006 5:21PM
Clint: Quit your biased whining and submit a link. Anyways the AIAS awards don't mean much if you have to be a member in order to even quilify for an award. I'd put more credence in the Game Developers Choice Awards.
Personally, I own God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, and Resident Evil 4. God of War ranks third in my favorite games of 2005. Shadow isn't in my top 5.
Smither @ Jan 17th 2006 5:26PM
"Does Eve even have 30,000 users? 30,000 votes is 0.6% of the 5 million WoW users."
Yeah but all of Eve's players play on the same server, it really is one huge gaming univerese, Unlike Wow that is sharded lol
doubtful @ Jan 17th 2006 5:32PM
I'm sure WOW fans would respond, or would've voted in the first place, if they weren't so busy playing WOW.
Joenormal @ Jan 17th 2006 7:28PM
I'm surprised I haven't heard more about EVE. I admint it really seems like a great alternative to the Fantasy based mmorpgs out there. Sadly, I like many other gamers out there only have time for one mmo in our lives. WOW has that spot for me right now. Maybe if it lose it's luster, I can give Eve a shot...but until then.
Obligatory @ Jan 17th 2006 7:40PM
Mmm..EVE is so great. It may not be the right game for all, but I'm SO glad I found it. The only way I'm able to post this is because I minimized EVE for a sec.
gtg.
Spartacus @ Jan 17th 2006 7:52PM
"Hey Farva, what's that place you like to eat at with all the crazy stuff on the wall?"
Anyhoo, yes, WoW would've got more votes if WoW users had known about it. 5 million acounts kind of speaks for itself... I've played WoW, it was good for a while, but the upper levels just aren't as fun as the lower levels IMO. I have a level 48 warrior and can't seem to find the interest in leveling anymore... But hey, I also know a guy who dropped out of college just so he could level his mage to 60... That my friends is a tell-tale sign of being a complete loser. If this happens to you or anyone you know, please get help and sever your internet connection ASAP.
Gunblade @ Jan 17th 2006 10:23PM
As a member of mmorpg.com for about three years now I am very suprised by some of your guys responses.
This was simply a poll of all the mmorpgs of 2005 there were a ton of games nominated in the categories. Please visit the site to see the statistics of the vote they are very interesting. This was the first time mmorpg.com did this, alot of peeps on the forum are complaining of Eve Online fan boys ruining it. But thats just dumb....
Everyone just voted for what they thought was best given the nominations and categorys and I have to say for best company I totally voted for CCP. On the other categories I didn't because well I am a long time vet and have played'em'all as they say.
Oh and to get everyone stirred up. WoW is the same old shit what is it about Blizzard and Cartoon graphics that gets everyone to subscribe
Skellibjalla @ Jan 18th 2006 4:32AM
Hi all. I am a CCP developer.
First off, thanks to everyone that voted for our game on www.mmorpg.com. We are humbled and at the same time extremely invigorated by your support. Just wait and see what we have in store for you in the future!
And just to rectify a little flaming:
1 - EVE: Online has MUCH more than 30.000 subscribers :) and the player base is growing phenomenally. Everyone is playing in ONE universe where a given player can meet, interact and have business with any other player.
2. - Our hardware is second to none in the industry and next month, our server cluster (Tranquility) will be upgraded and become one of the Top 500 Supercomputers of the World.
3. - We are biggest in many respect, e.g. we hold the world record for Peak Concurrent Users in a mmorpg - We made 23.123 concurrent users last sunday - a number easy to remember (and we have a 15k - 21k peak on any normal day). EVE contains what is probably the most expensive virtual property in the world, which hundreds or thousands of players bought into and owns shares in.
4. - Our player base is the most outstanding, loyal and involved bunch of people of any computer game. We salute them!
Finally, thanks to Joystiq for covering mmorpg's poll... and now, back to work :)
L'Emmerdeur @ Jan 19th 2006 11:36AM
Perhaps it is time to start beating on some Weblogs, Inc. posters with the politeness stick by deleting their comments.
A few comment threads I read today on Engadget and Joystiq have been quite, um, colorful, as well as blindingly retarded.
Jack Sokol (Sharke of CC) @ Jan 19th 2006 12:26PM
Eve Online, this is a joke right?
I haven't played the game, but I would suggest the poll is a tad skewed.
That game is not even on the radar screen (as far as I know)
Not to demean the game, but it's not exactly wildy popular, compared to just about every other MMO.
Wisdo @ Jan 30th 2006 4:43AM
"Not to demean the game, but it's not exactly wildy popular, compared to just about every other MMO"
The award was for BEST MMORP, not most popular. I havent played any other MMORPG's for an extended period as I am totally not into that Tolkien shite - so I have no idea if its the best of the bunch, but I can tell you the subscriptions are increasing exponentially. I gather what the other MMORPG's suffer from is that they are mainly populated with ranting teenagers, whereas EVE is mainly 20 - 30 somethings. Different crowd, different pace, different interests. Since MMORPG's are more about the player interaction than the game itself the age difference with EVE means most of the posters wont understand the attraction eve has. Still, everyone should experience a fleet battle once in their lives.

well congrats to Eve Online for such award...im a WOW fanatic but i do respect the opinions, decisions, choices, favorites of other people, other gamers.
Everygame reserves a recognization...this time around Eve got it...but then again you cannot take away the success of WOW...by that alone "success" it's more than anything...WOW is always the best whether having the award or not...because in the end still WOW's success could never be surpassed by just an award...BEING THE BEST IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT...

I have recently started playing Eve. The scope is enormous. Be a pirate or a pirate hunter. How about corporate business man, trader or miner/manufacturer. You need some time away then learn your skills whilst offline and the full scale battles - well!!!
I thank Guild wars, EQ2 & Ryzom (which is potentially a great game gone to waste) to drive me into the arms of Eve's seduction. Thanks for the prod.
