Well, in the future as consoles are used as more than just game systems, it becomes more necessary to make a nice UI for it. Not that this gen didn't have any of that, from what I've seen of the Xbox and PS2 interfaces, and my own Gamecube, they are quite cool but underused. The virtual console especially is a key aspect of this design, it has to be easy to use and well integrated for it to take off into the mainstream. Nostalgic geeks would probably think that playing the original Mario Bros. or Zelda games is priceless, but to the mainstream consumer it's just another way to get games, and it better be flawless. Just look at the success of iTunes. Honestly, back then no one thought it would work but it's quite apparent now that downloads are where the future is.

There's no way downloads will replace purchased media. First off, downloading music in a compressed format or older games is not a problem because these are usually less than 10 megs, but new media is in the range of several gigs. Even when highspeed 'net is everywhere, I still wouldn't want to wait 15 or 20 minutes to let my new game download. And as connection speeds get higher, media size will also grow. I've heard that downloading on the 360 is shite, so unless they make it more transparent (download while you are playing something else), I don't see it being useful for new content delivery.
Second, you can't easily take a 4 GB download to your friends house. Removable drives suck, and just as before, as 2.5" drives and flash drives get bigger, the media gets bigger. So these things are only marginally useful for moving games.
Another thing, grandma can't download the newest Mario game for her grandson. Games and accesories are where those in the video game industry make their money, not consoles. And we all know that Christmas results in a great economic loss (grandma buys a game for $50 that Timmy wouldn't spend $50, maybe not even $20).... so going to only downloads for new media will prevent the huge sales during the holiday season. I guess the only way this could be avoided is by having stores sell download credit just like they do gift cards... but this eliminates, for the most part, the economic loss (which is a loss for society/consumers, but a gain for the sellers).
I do agree, though, that more work needs to go into the UI. I love the 360's UI... XBOX's UI blew. If MS can make those changes in just one generation, I'd expect Sony and Nintendo can do the same.
More on topic: I think the GC's UI is much different than most expected. I wouldn't expect something this out-there, but I think it will be very clean and "cool". Remember, they want to avoid the kiddy image and keep a somewhat competitive image with Sony and MS.

Ugh, how is this viral marketing? I'm glad some of you learned a few new words, but it's just fans giving their take on a mysterious console. Everyone likes to share their ideas, but only the ones with some photoshopping skills can make something believable. So please, please stop using those words whenever a rumor pops up, it's terribly frustrating. Like kids talking about how "square polygons are the AwEsomNess!!!11!"

These people seem to give no thought to how annoying it would be to wait that long each time it loaded.

The real interface transitions will be short and sweet.
