1UP has released the results
of their 2006 user study, which aim to reveal "the gaming community's media usage, its gaming habits, attitudes
towards hardware ownership, and next-generation console purchase intent." Some of the more interesting findings
include:
- 77% plan to purchase a new game system in the next year
- 45% say
they are likely to buy a portable or handheld system
- 17% of 1UP.com users had already bought
Microsoft's next-generation Xbox 360 gaming console, and among users who say they're likely to purchase a system in the
next year, 59% of them plan to purchase the Xbox 360
- 73% plan to purchase a Sony PlayStation 3.
- Half of gamers on 1UP.com also say they will purchase a Nintendo
Revolution.
There are some additional numbers on the PSP's multimedia features, mobile gaming, and
more. At 10 million monthly visitors, the 1UP community represents a very large group of hardcore gamers. This study
reveals that over 62% of those users have either already purchased or plan on purchasing an Xbox 360 within the next
year. While it is lower than the PlayStation 3's 73%, it is a significant increase from the current generation's
percentages.

And before anyone says it, this isn't even a matter of being a Nintendo fanboy or not, anymore.

so 59+17=76
so 76% of them own, or will be buying a 360
vs 73% who own or will buy a PS3..
Looks like the xbox has the upper hand.

Wait, you said 17% of their readers had already purchased a 360, and 59% plan on buying one in the next year.
How does 17%+59%=62%?
Reply
17% have already bought a 360 and amongst the 77% that plan on buying a new console, 59% plan on buying the 360?
...so that's 17% + (.59*77) = 63%
And 73% of those who plan on buying want a PS3?
...so that's .73*77 = 56%
So it would appear that the 360 has a HIGHER percentage, not lower...
But this isn't the way the article was written, now is it?
~~~
* Before the 2005 holidays, 17% of 1UP.com users had already bought Microsoft's next-generation Xbox 360 gaming console, and among users who say they're likely to purchase a system in the next year, 59% of them plan to purchase the Xbox 360.
* But Sony still dominates gamers' purchase intentions: 73% plan to purchase a Sony PlayStation 3.
~~~
Notice how they put a timeframe on the potential 360 owners but not on the PS3 owners? So is this not a little bit bias?
People who plan on buying a 360 are only counted if they are buying it WITHIN the next year, but those who plan on buying a PS3 are counted REGARDLESS of WHEN they plan on buying it? (Could be 5 or 6 years from now?!)
Or are they trying to say that 77% of the total plan on buying a new system this year, 73% of the total plan on buying a PS3 and 63% of the total plan on buying (or already have bought) a 360??? ...also meaning that a huge percentage plan on buying both?
Would the number of people who plan on buying a 360 have been higher if the stipulation that it had the be "within the next year" wasn't included?
Who knows.
This is why polls are BS. Only real statistics will reveal the truth.

Their fan base is not really big on microsoft. Just take a look at the size of the Sony forum compared to the others. The staff is a little more balanced, but There are frequent stories taking pot shots at the executive staff, the hardware, the games.
All that said, I think they like the 360 more than they thought they would. 'Specially Che. :)
