EGM is alright. PC Gamer is a superior publication though.

I personally don't like EGM becuase of how blatantly biased towards everything Sony they are and how they take one opinion of an editor and treat it as a fact all the way through the magazine (read an issue and you'll understand what I mean).

But they do have some really good articles that are actually about something the gaming community would want to read about. As long as they keep their own opinions out of it, a lot of their articles can be quite a fine read.

I might end up picking that issue up, every now and then I buy a particular issue, saying to myself "I'm finally gonna subscibe to this" but once I end up reading it all the way through, I remember I'd rather not subscribe to a Playstation magazine that covers the other systems just so they can insult them.

Anybody who has the issue, is there any Metroid in that top 200 list?

Is that really Shoe? Anyways, a pretty entertaining look back, although I would have liked to see if the original four members of the review crew are still involved in the industry somehow. I started reading EGM back around issue 15 or so and its nice to see its still around - although I miss the days of the 250- to 400-page 'phonebook' issues ('93-'94).

A "greatest games" list without PC games? Yeah right...

Sanitarium, Metroid was listed as numbers 52 (Prime), 23 (Super), and 11 (original) in the top-200 list, and I'm glad about that.

I don't know about any PlayStation bias in the pages of EGM, but the editors do have opinions, which I'm glad they're willing to share honestly, whether about Sony or anyone else's systems.

Oh, and thanks for stopping by, Shoe! Numbers 54 and 55 on the list may have had the wrong numerals in print, but those retro photos of the review crew more than made up for 'em in the end. =) Game on.

Meh, PC Gamer gave Sacred RPG of the year for 2005 (or was it 2004?) over Vampire Bloodlines. I admit, Vampire had some bugs in it but Sacred was just BAD. After that, I lost my respect for them :).

SeriousKriss, at the risk of looking like an EGM fanboy (I've got a subscription, so say what you will), the magazine is focused on console and portable games. That doesn't explain the coverage of classic arcade games in the list, but the arcade scene is admittedly a lot less vibrant here in the States than it was in the past. As Computer Gaming World seems to cover the PC side of things for Ziff-Davis, a console/arcade/handheld focus would seem to make sense for an EGM list, as this is the audience for the magazine (and it's clearly what it covers). I believe this is what they did for the top-150 list back in issue 150 (with a slightly different focus then), so it's not surprising that they limited the list to what they usually cover. At any rate, any comprehensive top-games list without qualifications would include PC games, of course, so clearer advertising would be appreciated in this case. I still feel, however, that the list's title and description were appropriate for EGM and its regular audience.

I also perceive the Playstation bias (ever since PSOne). EGM seems to side with whatever is "hip" at that point in time.
I'm glad I'm getting my sub for free though.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed how EGM periodically wraps its magazines in fake "covers" that are really just advertisments for an upcoming game. Talk about selling out. I don't think a magazine can get much worse than whoring out it's cover.

After diving in quality in the mid 90's, it's become one of the best gaming mags available.

I look forward to each issue....

In this day and age, where videogame news is a click away, that's a big accomplishment on their part.

congrats guys!

P.S.-the 1up show rules all.

Those are marketing side ads, dipshit.. EGM does not control them. and yes it can get much worse - it's called game informer, game pro, and maxim.

I can't read EGM because more than half the magazine is made up of advertisements. That's just not value for money in my books, and makes for a very tedious read. I also find it ridiculously superficial.

Give me Edge any day.

Dan Choi: They used to cover/review Arcade games for awhile, that's why there are arcade titles in there.
I got cover #2 of 4 and did anyone else catch these 3 things? 1st: Master Cheif holding the E.Sword and Uzi 2nd: Pikachu blasting Mega Man w/ an electric shock. 3rd: Michael Jackson trying to get near Kid Icarus and Kid Icarus looking freaked out.

Thanks for confirming that, CyborgVer666! I had a feeling they did cover arcade titles before, but I didn't want to claim it without something to back it up (hence the list of every other reason why listing arcades games made sense). As for the actual games listed, EGM may not have been around to review Pac-Man when it first came out in the arcades, but the game certainly left its mark in coin-op history and continues to have an effect in the rest of the gaming world. Sticking to non-PC games helped the mag's writers to focus their feature on the games that they knew best, which in my mind was a smart thing to do, and appropriate for their audience.

I total agree with #4. I've noticed it Also. The issue before the launch of xbox 360 they total focus on sony's press conference showing the new metal gear demo. Saying'solid Snake is Leading the war against 360. Not to put down Metal gear, but it was a tech demo and a year away!!! the 360 was coming out that week!! That is crap Shoe you would never say that about nintendo!!

yeah I noticed the same bias, but the thing is I am not going to break on them. ALot of these magazines really don't have a choice, are they going to rebel on the industry leader and risk not being able to get preleases to review? They are a magazine a business, lets say they did tell the truth, do you really think sony fanboys would want to hear that? And the PS2 is the dominat system, you are turning away that whole reader base. I personally don't buy game mags, I just don't see the point especially in america.

Do you think Egm is going to come out and say "OK ENOUGH IS ENOUGH CUT IT OUT WITH ALL THE GTA CLONES AND DRIVING GAMES, AND IF I SEE ONE MORE WWII GAME COME OUT I AM GOING TO GO APE SHIT!" nope they can't they have to review it like every other game and act like it is a game worth reviewing. For that reason I can't pick up a gaming mag, I rather they just go bonkers, and crap on everything rather than try and pull out somee sort of review that I know when I go to the store and see it I will hate it.
