John
Powers thoughtfully reviews Katamari Damacy on NPR's seminal interview program, Fresh Air. He touches on
videogame violence, senatorial fulmination, and the poor public image of gamers before calling Katamari Damacy
"the most brilliant riposte to all the alarmist cliches."He sounds like someone who has really been bitten by the Katamari bug when he declares, "This may be the best new game since the invention of chess!" He then examines the game, its outrageously catchy soundtrack, the "unabashedly" Japanese world, the obsessive collections of otaku, and the addictive nature of the game.
Though over a year late to the Katamari praise-a-thon, Powers review is accessible, thorough, informative, and insightful. Hopefully NPR, and the always great Fresh Air, keep up their flirtation with video games, however old they may be.
