Silent Hill theatrical trailer
If the Silent Hill teaser
wasn't enough to sate your appetite for creepy video game promotional materials, the full length trailer oughta do it.
And if you've been stuck watching Uwe Boll movies lately, then behold: high production values! The poster is also new I
think... perhaps a winner in the poster designing contest?Fans of the game know how creepy it is -- especially if played at night, alone -- and so there are some high hopes resting on the movie to really deliver in the pants-soiling category. From the looks of the trailer, it just may. To prevent being consistently disappointed in movie adaptations, let's resolve to expect total garbage, then we can be pleasantly surprised if it's anything but.
I'll begin: "This movie looks so l4m3! I'd rather have my eyelids cut off and watch BloodRayne for the rest of my life than watch this thing!"

Wow. Pleasantly surprised by the trailer! I've only played SH2, but from what I can tell, the movie seems very faithful to the feel and look of the game. I really liked that they maintained the fog and graininess of the games, as well as the creepy 'I'm-stuck-in-a-sack-of-skin' baddies.
I might actually go see this one...
jason @ Jan 20th 2006 11:01AM
the movie does look like it pays alot of respect to the game and holds true by looking freaky! but come on, that poster SUCKS. Anyone with photoshop can just do a "covered mouth" and be done. boring.
SickNic @ Jan 20th 2006 11:02AM
Might as well give it a shot. The movie industry IMO has hit rock bottom, and the only way they can go now is up..... (in theory)
Cyborg771 @ Jan 20th 2006 11:03AM
Wow, I thought that girl was creepy enough on Smallville. Now she is going to be in an actual horror flick. But seriously I doubt that it will be as good as the game but I will still see it.
C. Grant @ Jan 20th 2006 11:05AM
Nick, you're missing the point of the exercise! Now we're all going to express how cool we think it looks, and if we're disappointed, I'm blaming you! :)

This does look good.

This movie will be amazing to anyone who has ever played Silent Hill. They even use Akira Yamaoka's original music for the film! I have been checking yahoo movies every other day for about 4 months now waiting for this trailer and it's NOt in the least bit disapointing.
Marc @ Jan 20th 2006 11:22AM
That looks absolutely craptastic. I almost didn't make it to the end of the trailer.
smarterray @ Jan 20th 2006 11:25AM
The trailer makes it clear to the fans of the game that they've done their homework. The opening scenes--the jeep, the girl on the highway, the spinning out and crashing, the waking up without your daughter--are almost right on with the actual intro for SH1. They even play SH1's theme at the very end of the trailer. If anything, it will be true to the game's style (and probably not story, since Hollywood always needs to affect the story to add more drama).
Antec747 @ Jan 20th 2006 11:37AM
counting the days for this one. since day 1 of playing the first silent hill i always wondered what it would be like as a movie
Dante of smeg @ Jan 20th 2006 11:53AM
This film looks sweet. very true to the game.
Even has the siren in it and the metal rusted mesh fence.
Nick @ Jan 20th 2006 12:10PM
My apologies! I will agree that the poster sucks ass. My biggest problem is that its not correctly colored. My eye automatically picks up where they used makeup or digitally blurred the image to hide her mouth. If you look towards her nose, you can see where they poorly blended it with the color of the shadows on her face.
Photoshoppers on the web do better than that...
lain @ Jan 20th 2006 12:26PM
i can't wait for this. very excited to hear the siren and SH1 music in the trailer (and prelude to the radio).
ymmv @ Jan 20th 2006 12:29PM
I'm looking forward to the movie, especially because of the director. Christophe Gans also directed the excellent movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf". He's in a completely different class than Uwe "is that a camera? are you actors?" Boll.
Terpsichore @ Jan 20th 2006 12:41PM
I don't know about this. I'm couldn't see the trailer very well, but IMDB lists the cast and Lisa Garland's character is nowhere to be found, which is sad because she added some emotional heft to the story. From what I could see of the trailer, they might be keeping with SH's emphasis on disturbing imagery and environments, and unsettling overall feel rather than straight-out zombie dog coming through windows shocks, but I don't know how well that can translate to film. The unsettling feeling that SH captured so brilliantly was dependent on the player being immersed in the game world.
Frankly, SH2's story would have been a better direct translation to film.
MA666UT @ Jan 20th 2006 12:44PM
seriously , u guys cant find anything else to mess with but the poster? who cares!!!! its a damn poster... ever hear dont judge a book by its color.... i thikn we shoudl follow that in this situation..
MA666UT @ Jan 20th 2006 12:52PM
and yes i said color!
Rocket Punch @ Jan 20th 2006 12:55PM
The most promising G2M so far! There are many good thing going for this movie and here is a short list:
1) A horror movie that is actually going to be rated-R
2) Uwe Boll had nothing to do with it
3) Orginal game music by the game's composer
4) The director Chris Gan is actually a gamer
5) Gan actually played most of the series to the end
6) Not trying to reivent the concept of the game
Did I mention Uwe "Bomb" had nothing to do with it?

As a huge Silent Hill fan, I'm a little disappointed. Of course, the fact that I'm basing my opinion on just the trailer is far from fair, but since when was being opinionated on the internet about giving things a fair shake?
The one thing that I find the most distressing is that the main character is able to call her husband from inside of the town. Silent Hill is all about developing a feeling of isolation, of being swallowed and slowly digested by an overwhelming evil, and about not knowing whether, in the end, it was the evil without or the evil within. If you can use your cell phone? Eh.
Additionally, I'm a little worried about potential lighting and camera issues, and about ineffective use of what I think is the most important part of the game, the original score -- it'll be hit or miss in the movie, as far as I'm concerned.
But I'm going to go watch the trailer a couple dozen more times to be sure...
shidoshi @ Jan 20th 2006 1:27PM
It's funny, Kai, because that was the one thing that bugged me too - she was able to call out. I mean, it won't ruin the movie for me, but that still goes against what Silent Hill is about.
I really had to crack up at the opening of the trailer, though, where Rose tells her daughter that she's taking her to Silent Hill. What a great mom... haven't you ever played these games lady?! You don't want to take your daughter there! *heh*
Dannny @ Jan 20th 2006 3:24PM
I am so excited, they did a great job with the fog, and the falling ash. The only part that worries me is the actress that plays Cybil, she looks crazy fake, with her skin tight cop outfit. I keep waiting for "You can leave your hat on" to start playing. You don't see her in the trailer, but in the prod. stills.
Jhalasi @ Jan 20th 2006 5:24PM
This movie really looks awesome. I've played the trailer(and teaser) to people who've long played the series and who've never even heard the name and most seemed impressed. I say this is probably the best game to film adaptation we're going to get.(atleast for a long time)
I for one will be waiting in line come April 21st

#19 Kai sums it all up. I am a bit disappointed too, although the goosebumps came when the orginal score was played in the end.

#20 She is not taking her to Silent Hill, she is taking her to a hospital because she is sick and doesn't want her to know. Then she crashes and magically appears in the town of Silent Hill.
nwest @ Jan 21st 2006 4:33PM
That trailer looks awesome! I can't believe how true it is to the first game. The only thing I see that's really different is that the main character is a woman, whereas in Silent Hill (for the PS1) it was about a dad looking for his missing daughter in the town. They even have the creepy alternate elementary school. And the music! They pulled it straight from the game! That music still sends chills up my spine when I hear it.

I can't wait for this movie. It will be the top horror movies for 2006, fo sho!
Omg, from reading on how the script process of writing for this movie, I do believe we have a winner. Everything in this movie is going to be related to the games and franchise of Silent Hill.
Let's just pray that it's not another Doom movie where the demons aren't really demons, but mutated scientist. AHK!

commenting on other people's comments--
1) don't worry, Lisa Garland is in the movie. she apparently doesn't play as big a role as she did in the game, but I've seen a production shot of her character.
2) the cell phone thing didn't bother me-- we all know you can communicate from within Silent Hill, but only when the town allows you to, for its own reasons (see SH2, "I got a letter"). obviously the town wants Christopher there for some reason, because he does eventually get in. so it makes sense for her to be able to call him.
Brownsugercandy @ Feb 24th 2006 4:19PM
Hi I am sillent hill nuber one fan YES number one. I have all of their games, and let me just also add to this that is very weird and shocking my name is also (Lisa Garland)that freak me out when i first played this game in 1999. what i like about this game is that it stands out, just complet horror there is no other game out there that compares. I knew all along that they was gonna come out with a movie. The game is to good, why not. I know it would be better than that crap ass game called Resident Evil. Who cares about some fag ass zombies that have nothing to do but running around moaning like there on drugs not that scary at all and eating people come on i mean zombie is so like 300 years ago when there was voodoo. And for the movie its so stupid im just glad they stop making it. But all i know is that it time for Silent Hill to shine and when its up there it will but stuck there so you might as well call it a star.
Peace out. Silent hill all the way baby
PS] I WILL BE ON THE LINE BEFORE YOU
Gus @ Mar 30th 2006 6:04PM
I only played SH2 andI really liked it!(I beat it twice!) I only read about what the first silent hill is about (starts out with car crash and the dad needs to find her daughter...blah blah blah). I think that all movies that are based on games completely sucked! But I still give them a chance. I played and beat "Alone In The Dark" (1,2, and 3) and I played RE4 and RE1 (version of the first one remade for gamecube) and I have to say that the movies based on those games sucked! I think Mortal Combat that was the only movie that was based on the game (but yet the game never really had any story to it). I remember when I saw Alone In The Dark at the movies the only thing that was from the game was the fact that the main character was still called Edward Carnby. As FOR Resident Evil...HOLY CHRIST WHAT A SHITTY-ASS MOVIE THAT WAS!!! That movie had none of the characters from the game inside of it and if you see Resident Evil (the movie) and then play the game you will be like:"Holy shiiit this is toatally different!" I am sure that what I've seen from the commercial for Silent Hill I think it will be a good flick! I trust that the director will do a good job since he is upsest with Silent Hill (plus I like Sean Bean)and I'm sure he won't dissapoint us. The only thing that concerns me is...wasn't the main character suppose to be a dad and not a mom...oh well. As for the poster...yeagh it is one of the dumbest poster I've ever seen! As for the makers of those other movies that were loosely based on the game, SHAME ON YOU! GOD! The Resident Evil movie was insulting to see if you've played the games before and so was Alone In The Dark (but somehow I knew Alone In The Dark was going to suck)I have a feeling Silent Hill is going to be a good movie! (I think Jeff Daniels will make a good James Saunderland if they make a second Silent Hill Movie). I am definatley going to see Silent Hill in the movies! I reccomend that you should go see it! It will definately be worth the money! It looks good!
