Hmmm.... I am not surprised by this. I am sure many more companies will be financial affect by (as Sony and Microsoft put it) the HD era where development cost will go through the roof and the non success of a game will spell bankrupt a company.

Nintendo's approach dare a say it looks like it will win over 3rd party support just based on affordability for gaming developers and a quick turn around on the finished product. They are already getting support from up starts that cannot afford or risk the HD era. Simply put, cheaper development cost and less financial risk is a profitable path to take.

Poster #1 -- Majesco isn't "talented," they're just a publisher. The developer of Psychonauts *is* talented, and they had a hard time finding a publisher for their quirky game, which is why they ended up at budget house Majesco.

Majesco is right back where they started, back when they were the licensee for the "Sega Genesis 3," a re-release of the old 16-bit hardware. I'm sorry to see them lose their position, but it really doesn't change much from a gamer's POV.

Last year I applied for a position at Majesco. They never called me back. Reading this makes me glad they didn't.

"CNN are"? Seriously, have any of your ever taken a single course in grammar, usage and style? There constant embarassing mistakes frequently made on this site with apparently no rush to get better.

It seems like a lot of gamers don't understand the significance and the long term implications that Majesco's failure posses. Majesco took the risk of attempting to deliver unique content to an industry saturated w/ sequels and undesirable licenses. They attempted deliver on what so many are always bitching about. But did enough ppl support them? No. So guess what, other devolpers will take notice of the "inhert failure in ambitious ventures" and stick to delivering another Splinter Cell 16, PGR 10, another damn Madden that is barely an evolutionary advancement of the series, releasing games based on a romance movie cuz it had a good weekend box office, another damn war game... and the list goes on.

Psychonauts was regarded as one of the best games in 2005 and I concur. But cuz many chose another FPS WWII game or the same Madden they bought the year b4, then everyone should expect creative content to be further limited. So many ppl cry like little bitches cuz the game industry is not as creative as we'd like, I wonder who is responsible for that.

it's sad to see small publishers not being able to compete. Stuff like this does not give hope to any new developers/publishers coming up and succeeding on their own.

I'm not an economist or anything, but isn't the system flawed if you can't get individuals to succeed relatively easily? they have to huddle up, merge, and go with the tried and true just to survive?

DG~ Indeed, I've taken several courses on English grammar. However, as you may have noticed from other posts of mine, I write in British English. Using a corporate entity in the plural sense is valid British English grammar, although rare in American English. I apologise if the difference offends you, but it's not a mistake.

If, however, I were to attempt consistent Americanisation of my posts and odd grammatical cross-pollination slipped through, then this usage *would* be a mistake. It's for that reason that I stick to what I know best--"real" English ;-)

...#6, "majesco are, cnn are, nintendo are," are all proper grammar. the acronym "cnn" does not refer to one person, but a group of persons, silly. calm down.

Sorry but unlike Atari & Midway have at least had hit games. If you look thru all the games that Majesco has developed they're nothing to be excited about.

http://games.ign.com/objects/025/025600.html

Plus
most of the games they have published have been nothing to be excited about either.

If Psychonauts would have actually have a competent publisher with a real marketing budget, I think it woulda done better.

I agree with Black Guy. Those of you who didn't pick up and play Psychonauts missed out and have no right to bitch about the gaming industry shying away from innovation/creative ideas. It's definitely the most fun I've had on my Xbox, followed closely by running around the wide-open world of Morrowind and blasting 14-year-old kids in Halo 2. (OK, more often than not they killed me.)

#19...Psychonauts WAS NOT a Majesco developed title.

I swear...some of you people don't know the difference between a "developer" and a "publisher."

Double-Fine Productions was the DEVELOPER of Psychonauts...a studio founded by the well respected and industry vetern Paul Schaefer (SP?).

The Xbox is in desperate need of some good platform titles. The ONLY one I can think of that was almost a good platformer was Voodoo Vince. It had its own unique style and gameplay but didn't quite compete with Mario 64, the Jak series, Ratchet & Clank series, etc.

A late night variety musician and a game designer that provide the world with some of the best adventure gaming ever?! That guy is freaking amazing!

...I think you meant Tim Schafer. ;)

Psychonauts was an awesome game...a lot of people really skipped over such a great title for some odd reason. Pretty sad.
