Getting the girlfriend to join in (Xbox 360 Delight #006)

Last night the Xbox 360 finally managed to get the girlfriend to crack a smile. No big deal, right? Wrong. The longstanding feud between the little lady and the Box began last generation, spurred by my ill choice of words:
Girlfriend: "You gonna bring your game with you to your parents' house this weekend?" ["Game" is her generic term for "Xbox"]
Me: "Nah, I think I'll leave her here."
Girlfriend: "Her?"
Me: "..."
Relations only grew worse with the recent introduction of the Xbox 360 into the bedroom, its soft white exterior and subtle concave curves beckoning from the corner. My attempts to charm the girlfriend with the ease and accessibility of Xbox Live Arcade fell flat... "I'm going into the other room to read the newspaper." And let's not forget the time I tried to show her how cool it was that I could download the Fight Night demo and play it right then and there... "I don't understand boxing. Why would you want to hit someone like that?" Things finally boiled over when she awoke to find me clutching the controller during an early Saturday morning session. And all hopes for one big happy family ceased to exist.
And then, just last night, a funny thing happened... We were lying in bed when she suggested we put on some music. So, knowing that my iPod was connected to the Box, I grabbed the 360 controller and powered up the system. "Why are you turning that thing on?"
"'Cause the iPod's connected to it."
"Oh, well can't you just hook it up directly to the speakers?"
"Yeah, but look, it's really easy to do it like this..." And I went through the motions, shifting to the Media blade, selecting the Music option, and opening up the iPod's contents.
"It's all there? Everything on your iPod?"
I selected a playlist I'd compiled for her birthday party last summer. "Yeah, check it out."
"Cool."
"And look, I can just turn off the screen and the music will keep playing through the speakers."
I reached for the TV remote. "Hold on. What's that?"
She was pointing at the minimized version of the visualization application, running in the lower left corner. "Oh, that's just the little visualization thingy."
"Like on iTunes?"
"Yeah. You can even make it like full screen and mess with it using the controller."
"Really?"
"Uh-huh."
"Let me see!"
"Okay..." I switched the visualization to full screen mode and twirled the thumbsticks around.
"Woah... that's awesome," she giggled.
"You wanna-"
"Yeah, give it to me!" She snatched the controller and went to work. Twisting and turning, burrowing through infinite vortexes of swirling lines, seduced by the bright flashes of light. And she sat and she played. And she smiled and she laughed. And I marveled at her newfound acceptance.

Sadly I never could get my gf to ever to play ANY of my game systems...not even my bastard child Gamecube =/ I have however been able to get my younger sister hooked onto my Dreamcast thanks to Crazy Taxi. And by hooked I mean she literally went into my room disconnected it and locked herself and the console in her room...I still haven't seen my Dreamcast for 2 weeks =/
abadaba @ Jan 25th 2006 2:09PM
All this story has taught me is how annoying girlfriends are. "Wahhh, give me attention, wahhhh, stop playing the xbox you bought with your own money, wahhh, give me money, wahhh i want a baby, wahhh i want a divorce, wahhh give me child support money"
PiNPOiNT @ Jan 25th 2006 2:11PM
The clincher for the first xbox for my girlfriend who finally played a game with me, was when i turned on the NES emulator, and we played the mario 3 together. Everytime she's over that's all she wants to play :( still trying to get her to fall in love with geometry wars.... :(
Mark Felps @ Jan 25th 2006 2:15PM
I had to buy my wife a DS and a copy of animal crossing to get her off my 360. Between Hexic HD, Bejeweled2 and Zuma, it was all I could do to get in a round of DOA4. Thankfully, there's no Tetris for the 360 yet.
Sense @ Jan 25th 2006 2:17PM
Non-Games are your best bet to get non-gamers to play.
I would suggest rhythm games or Karaoke Revolution.
Mario Party is okay for non-gamers, but they get turned off by its length.
Puzzle games are good for non-gamers too.
Non-gamers need games that are fun, disposable, and don't require any extra investment.
Mark @ Jan 25th 2006 2:18PM
can we see a pic of your girlfriend?
:) :)
Gene @ Jan 25th 2006 2:19PM
Thats awesome! My GF used to hate it everytime me and my boys had HALO sessions, until she saw us play Burnout. Then I brought home a PSP with Burnout Legends and she got hooked, now I'm getting her one for VDay lol.

I guess I am just one of the lucky ones... my gf beat GTA3 AND Ghost Recon before I did :-[. Once I got my 360, she was hooked on Call of Duty 2 and logged just as much time playing as I did. While abadaba makes a great point... it doesn't ALWAYS turn out that way... at least not 100% :-p
J @ Jan 25th 2006 2:46PM
It's all about finding that gateway drug -- that one game that makes her say "wow this is slow and simple enough that I don't feel overwhelmed." I can now say that my fiance has become a Hexic addict. My next step is to get her to finish a lap in PGR3 in under 10 minutes.

I think one of the reasons my girlfriend got me a 360 for my birthday is so she could get her clutches on my Xbox. She loves herself some Halo 2....and she's not bad at all (her level is about mid 20s in a week of playing).
Of course, this didn't come before months of complaining about it. Then she decided to play it (sounds like what I did with it).
But it leaks over to the 360...she likes Zuma as much as I do, and is also into Bejeweled. I'm sure as more puzzle games come out, I may find myself coming home to her zoned in on TV with XBLA.
She also enjoys Mario RPG and the Devil May Cry series. She beat God of War, but can't handle Ninja Gaiden (too hard, even on Ninja Dog mode).
It's great; my ex's always hated my gaming (especially Final Fantasy). An acceptable birthday/valentines present is 1 year of XBL, a Microcon XBox controller, and a couple of games.
m3mnoch @ Jan 25th 2006 2:59PM
heh. luckily i have a wife who not only plays, but plays more than i do. we're a multi-gamertag house.
there's nothing cooler than your wife turning off stupid reality tv shows, turning to you and saying, "i'm bored. let's play some team slayer."
m3mnoch.

My girlfriend likes playing Katamari, Animal Crossing, or that other video game, EBay.
Anand @ Jan 25th 2006 3:11PM
Xbox 360 visualization thingy> Electroplankton
Except the two are different, but I think people who like EP will enjoy the visualization thing on the 360 as well.
Kudos
doug @ Jan 25th 2006 3:16PM
She says "Give it to me!" and you hand her the controller?
No wonder you can't score chicks who actually share your interests.
portorikan @ Jan 25th 2006 3:23PM
The clincher for my fiance was/is Zuma. She's played that game, and she alone has gotten me the 24hour acheivement, and she really hates(ed?) the xbox and rolled her eyes when I went to get my 360. Now, I come home from work, and the controller is sitting on the coffee table where she leaves it after playing.
She's probably logged in more hours that I have. She won't play geowars though. Too hard and confusing for her.
dsub @ Jan 25th 2006 3:24PM
women love classic NES games for some reason. At least all the ones I know do. My girlfriend will play nothing else...except for nhl 2k6 on the 360, because she's a hockey nut. I must admit though, it's one of the funner sports titles I have played.
Keg @ Jan 25th 2006 3:34PM
My gf wasn't much of a gamer until Animal Crossing came along. She cursed the XBox and when I brought the 360 home she cursed it as well. Then she walked in on me playing Hexic. Well the rest was history and I was finally able to regain control of my Animal Crossing house on my DS.
gamer1 @ Jan 25th 2006 3:57PM
I dont know, dude Getting the girlfriend to join in on the fun of the Xbox 360 for the Ipod functionality with the visualizations isnt really related that much to gaming. It is pretty cool that she found that feature interesting though. You might want to try loading up a whole bunch of pictures of you two on your Ipod and run a slideshow while the music is playing.
My girlfriend refuses to play any of the retail games on the Xbox 360, but she really likes Hexic HD and Geometry Wars. If your girlfriend is like mine, try showing those games to her. Maybe shell like it. Oh yeah, dont forget to set up a Gamertag for her so that she can collect her own achievements and leaderboard scores. Let her pick out her own Gamertag picture too. Maybe someday your girlfriend could be on my girlfriends friends list!
mercatfat @ Jan 25th 2006 4:02PM
no offense, but your girlfriend sounds like she kind of sucks.
there are plenty of worthwhile women who will play/understand games, and they're not all fat and/or lazy either.
if they don't like what you do, and you aren't into what she does, you're settling. don't settle. i had a similar situation to yours and leaving it for someone who enjoys games (mostly Animal Crossing and Mario, but others too) and tolerates my gaming habits was the best decision i ever made. it doesn't hurt that she's about 17 times more attractive, physically and mentally.
of course, if you're still trying to get her to like first person shooters and other man-games, you're a lost cause.
Daniel @ Jan 25th 2006 4:08PM
I used to think it was cool that my girlfriend wanted to play halo with me. But after constant cries of "wait up!", "oh my God I'm getting shot!" and, "Where do I go now!?" I realized the meaning of being careful what I wish for.
Jelly @ Jan 25th 2006 4:29PM
I've had a few experiences like this, first (or maybe first and second) were when i had a couple of parties over the winter (fireworks night and new years), both included about half non-gaming girls, who all totaly got into geometry wars etc. They also loved the visualisations, and i now have on hooked on halo :P I think that's an acomplishment.
The other is the fact that i got my sister to love geometry wars, i moved the console downstairs, and she quite often plays it now...she's chasing my high score :P I need to play it more...
Chirag @ Jan 25th 2006 5:07PM
All your girlfriends suck, my girl is the best she owns a 360 n she had it pre-ordered all the way in June. She also plays halo 2 with me n loves it...she's a 24 in team slayer. No, she isnt fat nor is she ugly, she's beautiful n gorgeous n i love her. You guys can keep tryin maybe one of u will get lucky n scoop up a hott one like me.
The ZeroCorpse @ Jan 25th 2006 5:14PM
Dude,
You have the girliest, neediest girlfriend I've heard of in a long time; the giggly, wiggly, perfume-n-shopping type who "doesn't get" anything that her Barbie dolls wouldn't do.
I hope she's pretty. She's certainly hasn't got personality going for her from the way you describe her.
My advice? Don't marry her. Your gaming hobby will be sacrificed, and you'll think that's cool because you like her so much, but then years later you'll say to yourself "I used to have a fun hobby. Whatever happened to that guy?"
James @ Jan 25th 2006 5:39PM
Me and my girlfriend have a good 'gaming' relationship, unless i'm engrossed in Counter-Strike. We've bought various consoles for each other. She got be a GC a while back after having a laugh with Mario Party 2 and Mario Kart on the N64, she also got me a DS for xmas which a can rarely prise out of her hands thanks to Mario World/ Mario 3 (notice a nintendo/plumber theme).
I've tried to get her into a bit of DM but she's a console lover and won't play anything by 007 Nightfire DM (shudder) as she's good at it. Her excuse is 'poor visual awareness' she got bored of HL2 rather quick.
I've reciprocated the gift, PS2, Rez + Trance Vibrator, the game that keeps on GIVING. I think you all know what I mean :D:D:D
And yes, i do involve myself in my GF's hobbies, be they fetish modelling, buying latex outfits and the like. ;)
BlackYoshi @ Jan 25th 2006 5:51PM
I love how Micheal says "Stop being selfish and start sharing in her interests" when he really has no basis to assume that the writer already doesn't. It sounds like maybe the girlfriend could be more open.
Michael McGuire @ Jan 25th 2006 5:58PM
Your girlfriend is extremely entertained by blinking lights and she hates video games.
Sounds like a winner ;-)
Basil Ho @ Jan 25th 2006 7:42PM
GUYS!!! My girlfriend buys me big harvs everyday, she brings back about a dozen of em, and we finish them off in about 10 minutes mmm tasty. Even though she weighs in over 350 pounds i still love her, we would buy an xbox , or an xbox 360 but our budget is all spent on our food.
Josh @ Jan 25th 2006 9:44PM
This is why I read Jostiq. Great article!
(Plotting this very same tactic tonight. T-minus 2 hours and counting...)
Ravuya @ Jan 25th 2006 11:25PM
Ah, Neon. The best reason to own a 360, ever.
Matthew @ Jan 26th 2006 1:47AM
My girlfriend and I play DDR quite often. She loves that game. We are both very good at it but she still beats me most times. I don't mind though cause it keeps that ASS LOOKIN TIGHT! She loves that its fun and is also a great workout.
Matthew @ Jan 26th 2006 1:54AM
So yeah, for all the crap DDR seems to get on this site, if you can get your girlfriend into playing it, much like puzzle games it will become an addiction for her. Its simple, easy to jump into, she gets to dance and listen to music, you get to see her bounce around, she has fun, is entertained, you can have fun with her and she can lose TONS of weight while doing it. I mean seriously what better game is there for both sexes that can do that? You can talk about all these games your girlfriend plays but do they get her to work out too? I think not.
MedwayPVB @ Jan 26th 2006 4:45AM
Well done that man! :-)
@ James W-R: Try using more than one controller with Neon (the visualiser). There's lots more you can control than just the 'camera' view:

I got my gf hooked on nintendogs very easily and she spends way more time playing Mario Kart DS (which she can because she completely kicks my butt at it)and has done a little time on Katamari as well. But last night I got her to pick up the Xbox (still can't find a 360 in NYC) controller for the first time. A couple weeks ago she'd been telling me about how she was good at Aladdin and Sonic when she was little, so last night I popped in POP: Sands of Time, telling her it was like Aladdin but cooler. Three hours later I was prying it from her hands so I could play some Radiata Stories on PS2. She's now thinking that whenever I do finally find a 360, she'll be right over. She's awesome 'cos she never wants to stop me from playing, and we do a lot of things like reading and going out together, but she's perfectly happy to spend an evening working on her college homework while I'm leveling up in Dragon Quest or straightening out emotional baggage in Psychonauts. Domestic Bliss.
FormFactor @ Jan 26th 2006 3:05PM
#9 are you nuts? Stop being selfish and get interested in things she likes?????!
All these girls like are MTV "reality" shows these days. What is more mind numbingly boring than that?
Soon Hui Vchai @ Jan 26th 2006 5:19PM
I have tried and failed a number of times, with a number of games (although wf beats me in fighting and she loves GTA), I am hesitant to invest in all that DDR gear just to hear her say: "Dont buy games with me in mind! I dont like games."
One day, maybe, one day! To dream...
