DS lite vs. DS comparison

This probably isn't the first DS lite vs. DS phat comparison, and it most definitely won't be the last. But until Nintendo gives us more than a birds eye view of their new handheld, we're going to have to base our opinions on the two marketing shots they've released so far. One thing's for sure (at least in my mind): the matte white is a definite step up on the "spotted shine" silver.

I dont like DS Lite at all, I wanted to get it for a while but I like my original DS better... And I agree with KingBigos I think the The redesign was pointless... Basically the only difference is the bright ass screen and the size ... oh yea and the smaller speakers.... Oh and what iv ben wondering for a while is why any one would waste another 80 bucks on the ds lite just because it looks cooler, I mean I bought my ds for the games and the graphics not because it looked "cool"
Stig @ Mar 14th 2007 1:35AM
i totally disagree with u Sikx, i own a ds lite, and my friend owns a ds phat, the speakers actually make the same amout of sound between the two, it seems like that the ds phat has bigger speakers, but they are actually the same size but with more holes in the ds, also, they have enhanced the LED screen so that it's brighter, but reduced the stress from looking at it for a long time. Also, in canada, the price is now a 10 dollar difference only, and when u buy the ds lite, it comes with a upper and lower screen protector, this has been going on for about 5
months now.
Stig @ Mar 14th 2007 1:40AM
Also, for the ds lite, there are three colours, pink, white , and onyx(black). And now the mic. (microphone) is now place in the centre of the console(on the centre of the fold), so that u can just talk straight into the console, instead of shifting ur head.
CALEB @ Jun 1st 2007 7:27PM
dis-agree. u will probli think im crazzy but i think dsis r better. 1.- ds lites have pointy edges, that digs into your hands-dosent feel ...very...COMFRDABLE.2.- TO SMALL.3.-if u swet while playing, that thaings gonna slip outof your hands. 4.- so who cares if the screens brighter that just means the battery life wont last verry long. and finaly 4.- the signal srength wont go as far as reglar dsis
Baby Mario @ Oct 11th 2006 9:25PM
I still say this looks good.
Einhanderkiller @ Jan 26th 2006 3:39PM
IMO, the DS Lite looks just as good as the PSP.
Myles Gaulin @ Jan 26th 2006 3:42PM
That's good. The original was so unfathomably hideous that I refused to buy it.
matt t @ Jan 26th 2006 3:43PM
I have been waiting to buy a ds because of this thing. i wish nintendo would quit being such a tease and give a north american release date.
its matte btw. i have the word "matt" patented.

Another comparison.
I only need a few more dollars until I get enough for a dsPHAT. I hope the price is lower or the same for a DSlite.
Oniel @ Jan 26th 2006 3:52PM
Compare it to the PSP. Compare DS games to PSP games.
mandarin @ Jan 26th 2006 3:53PM
Hopefully the screen is bigger...
Wonder what happened to that Nintendo UK guy who said about no redesign.....

I love it. I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Oh, and I find it very cool how it resembles the revolution controller sort of. Also, the brighter screen will be nice. After getting my GameBoyMicro, I've realized how dark my DS screens are. And I'm hoping it will feel more natural for my hands with this new version.
KingBigos @ Jan 26th 2006 3:57PM
The redesign was pointless...
krylon @ Jan 26th 2006 3:58PM
This being introduced right when I realize how much I want, nay, need to play mariokart online? Quite the perfect timing, says I. I'm getting one, unless the price drop on the older models is so severe as to warrant getting those instead.
AlloyNES @ Jan 26th 2006 3:58PM
QUOTE: "Compare it to the PSP. Compare DS games to PSP games."
Compared to the PSP, the new DS is sexy. Compared to the PSP's games, DS games are fun.
'nuff said.
Matt @ Jan 26th 2006 4:02PM
Yah.... im not seeing a big difference in the redesign of the DS except for a few things here and there
Mike @ Jan 26th 2006 4:10PM
Its definitely an improvement, but it doesn't look to be enough of an improvement to risk pissing off the millions of people who've had the DS for less than a year.
And the PSP is still slicker.
djSyndrome @ Jan 26th 2006 4:29PM

There are games on the PSP?

Risk pissing people off? I guess thats why Apple hasn't been doing so well with the iPod upgrades... Oh wait.

2 observations and a hope -
1. It's even more "Game & Watch-esque" than before, and I mean that to be a good thing.
2. If anyone has experienced the improved screens of the last relese of the SP, you know that the screens are so sharp, bright, and vivid that it even makes the DS screens look crappy by comparison. if this is the technology that has gone into the DS Lite, it's going to be a very dramatic improvement.
I hope they give it the same sort of clear plastic layer over the impregnated color that Apple uses for iBooks, the dull white does not seem to imply that to be the case, but it's hard to make out if you look at the edges if there isn't something similar going on.
I guess I'll find out when I pull my import out of the box in early April.
HardwareGuy @ Jan 26th 2006 4:42PM
My guess is the screens will be as good as the ones in the new SP and Micro. Even if they're not, I'll definitely be trading in my current DS when they come out, if only for the smaller size (for more pocket comfort).
Yaanu @ Jan 26th 2006 4:46PM
Oh for...

Waffle Soup @ Jan 26th 2006 4:51PM
Well I definatly like the new design. I don't think I will buy it though, I'm still happy with my fat DS
Also it didn't seem to adjust my two main problems with the DS, 1.The screens are still too far apart, and 2. I think the bottom corners should be more rounded so it feels more comfortable
But thats just my opinion
sharpfish @ Jan 26th 2006 4:58PM
As I've said before, it looks good. Until I see it in the plastic I can't tell wether it will be worth updating to over my current (silver) DS.
However I am a fan of white for this/next gen - Black and silver have been done! Though I'm sure Ninty will release it in a variety of colours in due course.
An alien green DS-Lite with metroid prime hunters pack is probably on the cards too ;)
fush @ Jan 26th 2006 5:02PM
I think the greatest thing about this design is the touch screen. Notice how it is raised against the rest of the buttons. Also, it doesn't seem to sit inside the case like the old design. This means no crumbs getting in that little wedge, and may even mean a firm and resilient new touch screen.
Yay!
Patricio @ Jan 26th 2006 5:15PM
I might trade in my psp for it. (since it gets no play) except for family guy UMD movies.
L0uSE @ Jan 26th 2006 5:23PM
Thank goodness it's called the DS lite and not the DS Pocket. The abbreviation DSP would have been very bad.
nonesuch @ Jan 26th 2006 6:16PM
Realize what this official release means: the design on the Revolution has been finalized, and likely has been since it was first shown at E3 '05. This design looks exactly like the mockup shown at E3, and is surely made to match it perfectly. Nintendo usually sticks with their released product designs. The original DS was only redesigned before launch due to public outcry: "it's ugly!"
BTW, Nintendo only did this because I bought a MK DS last month. Every time I buy something, an improved version is released immediately. Therefore, I claim full credit for the DS lite ;)
Oniel @ Jan 26th 2006 6:46PM
I Know This is off Topic but don't you hate when PSP boys try to vadidate their purchase when they know that it has as no games. Yeah I Untold Legends is best RPG ever.
LOLWTFBBQ @ Jan 26th 2006 6:48PM
...because DSL is better than DSP?
LH3 @ Jan 26th 2006 7:42PM
It's nice to see some ds news in January it really was a pretty bulky yet inovated platform.
Alot of people would like to see it in one of these colors.
http://www.wasapi.com/Nintendo_DS/images/nds_lightpictblack.jpg
Left-White
Middle-Black
Right- Silver
And even more people would like to see a green ds lite

Or maybe theres another color out there they would like.

I have just purchased a DS, should I repack and get the new one?
trik5tA @ Jan 26th 2006 10:07PM
So does anyone reckon that the sound wont be as loud due to smaller speakers? and does it still have the GBA slot anyone? sweet.. adjustable brightness on the screens :D
Captain Obvious @ Jan 26th 2006 10:19PM
I have to admit, it does look better.
But if I were a existing DS owner, I'd be pissed that they introduced a better looking model that makes the old one look like crap.
Ken Seang @ Jan 26th 2006 11:31PM
I like the look of the new model, but untill I see it in person then i'll decide whether or not ill sell my ds for the exact same thing, but better! Also, they seem have made it look like it matches the Revolution and it would be something Apple would design. Also, the D-pad and the its buttons looks more comfrontable, becuase the one right now seemed too non-pushy, lol.
lxile @ Jan 27th 2006 8:00AM
It's obvious that I'm completely freakin loco here, but I think the old version looks better. I've hated that damn ceramic white scheme since the very first iPod. And really, I have trouble holding on to my 'phat' ds, I'm really wondering how comfortable the new one is going to be.
