Red lights, no explanation (Xbox 360 annoyance #012)
During some late night shenanigans this past Friday, the power strip, which the Xbox 360 power supply and a host of other devices are connected to, was inadvertently kicked out of the wall socket. At the time, the Xbox 360 was streaming music from an iPod, while the visualization danced on a monitor. A nasty crackle & pop, followed by silence alerted us to the situation.Once the power strip was reconnected, an attempt to reboot the 360 resulted in the appearance of the dreaded red lights. To make matters worse, it was the flashing three-light pattern (i.e. internal error). I quickly shut the console off and rebooted. To my delight, the welcoming green glow emanated from the circle of light and the startup logo appeared on the monitor. I watched as the Dashboard successfully loaded and then turned the console back off. It was all good-or so I thought...
The following morning I enjoyed a DVD on the 360, but when I attempted to fire up some PDZ co-op later that day, I had some trouble syncing the wireless controller with the console. I figured the battery was dead, so I plugged in the play-and-charge cable. I still couldn't get the devices to sync. I figured the battery must be really dead, so I pulled out a second controller and a fresh set of batteries. Nope, nothing.
Panic mode set in. I rummaged through some drawers and uncovered the hardware manual, but the instructions for connecting a wireless controller proved futile. I found that I could power on the 360 with the controller, but could not perform further actions. I also discovered that none of the USB ports recognized the iPod or a digital camera. I looked up the number for Xbox Support and picked up the phone.
After being led through the same useless connecting steps-multiple times-the rep issued a repair order. I was to receive a shipping box on Monday or Tuesday and would get a new or repaired unit within 8 days. There was no fee (and I didn't have to purchase the extended warranty repair plan). While the service time seemed reasonable, I was discouraged that Xbox Support couldn't offer any procedure or explanation beyond what I had already found in the manual. Wasn't there a diagnostics test I could run?
I dismantled the unit as advised, removing the cables, hard drive, and memory unit, preparing the 360 for shipping. Later I decided to plug the console back in-just the cables-so I could watch another DVD. For whatever reason, the media remote still functioned. For now, I was stuck with an overpriced DVD player. Sweet.

No 48 (matticulous) is right. My friend had the same problem happen to him TWICE in the same day due to power fluctuations in the area. All he did was to wait for a short while before powering the XBOX 360 once again and it ran smoothly witout a hitch. No hardware errors or anything else.
Dan @ Mar 6th 2006 8:36AM
Add me to the list... 360 failed yesterday after a month of use. Only thing I can see that my have gone wrong is that the fit of the power cord connector (wall outlet to PS) is poor - even though the cord is firmly inserted into connector, it does not have possitive connection.
I have a hard time believing that the failure rate is only 2%. Sounds like a company line to me.

Aww the infamous lights. I own an xbox 360 and so does my brother, but mine is fine and my brothers is faulty. We were going to play fight night opened the tray and blam! The infamous lights, I quickly consulted the internet and found this was not the only one to be plauged by this problem. Mine is fine and i have played and beaten several games games with no problem aside from the ocassional freeze on 2k6, at least to this point. I found mine at K-Mart and my brother got his at Wal-Mart. Wally world said they would replace if had been bought in the last 90 days and he had his, but who knows when they will have them in stock again. All in all, it sounds like Microsoft rushed a unfinished product onto the market, but even the rough draft of this product is amazing. In the end I just hope they fix the problem, so everyone can enjoy theirs as much as I enjoy mine.

Note to self: Put all gaming systems on a UPS. 15 minutes should be ample time to shut things down in such an event.
APC does issue a $50,000 guarantee if anything connected to it gets damaged via power surge.

Ugh. This doesn't warrant as an "annoyance #xyz." The red lights issue is explained @ http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/. When I need one of my 360s repaired, I called 1-800-4MYXBOX on Saturday. A box was overnighted (Sundays don't count) and arrived on Monday. I sent it out that day and they got it on Tuesday. A new console was over-nighted on Thursday and I got it on Friday. Fast. Simple. Efficient. All at no cost.
So your "annoyance" is unwarranted.

Similar problem happened to us during power failure.
Eventually (ie after a series of red lights), the system did go green again and work. All seems fine, but we still get a red light (ie, no-go) every once in a while. Pretty rare though.

Oh man, just hope the teh delivery company doesn't lose/deliver your system to someone besides you, or that the one you get back actually works.
I sent mine back, and it would have been here in a matter of days if it weren't for DHL delivering my package to some other place. It also wasn't siugnature required like they said. When they finally found it they said that it was to be delivered to my house, which is not houw i filled out the shipping slip. I wanted them to send it to my palce of work, since i figured there would always be someone there to sign for it. I was told by MS customer service to "put a note" in with the system to tell them where to ship it. I also filled out the shipping form, having the clerk at th counter check it to make sure the return shipping address was correct. I also had to goto the airport myself to pick it up, or they woudl attempt to deliver it to my house the next day when i was at work, i i woudl assume leave it on my doorstpe since it was not signature required. When i finally got the package, my shipping label (which once again was my home address, not the return shipping address i had filled out on the form) was crosed out with a marker and someone else name was scrawled all over the box.
So when i finally did get my system back from them (like 15 days) the system itself not only locked/froze up after about 5-10 minutes of play, it also looked like crap. Not the graphic, but the greasy handprits all over the system, or the fact that when the case was put back together, the plastic teeth were misalinged and were chipped/broken/sticking out of the seam on the abck of the system.
This is probably a more isolated incident but be wary.

Had the same thing happen just last week, they replaced my console with no explanation why it was replaced but who cares back killing Nazis on Call of Duty.
bah @ Jan 30th 2006 1:11PM
unwarranted because you had a decent experience getting your broken xbox replaced? We aren't suppose to get mad that unplugging our system kills it? That accidently bumping it can kill it and/or ruin your game disk at the same time? What about those of us whose system broke and instead of fixing it and sending it back they send us a different system so all of our fucking saved games are LOST forever (I'm talking TONS of hours of work here..) and to make matters worse the replacement xbox broke in no more than a fucking week, and yes this did happen to me.

I'm in Canada and am worried about returning my box. I've had it since launch with no problems, until I updated the box with the recent OXM disc to play a little COD2 Demo. It ran fine to play the game, then after it was turned on later for some PGR3 action it tanked. E74 code and flashing bottom right red lights.
Will I receive a new box or this one fixed?
How long does it usually take?
This does suck, I loved the 360, now I'm without for what I can only assume will be a few months.
junior @ Jan 30th 2006 2:01PM
A week after launch, I was playing condemned and the power went out. The red lights turned on in the ring of light, so I unpluged it as fast as I could. When the power came back on, I pluged it back in and turned it on. It worked, I took the game out and let it rest. so I bought a really good surge protector and hooked it up.It's been working perfect since then.

Also it seems when you have both USP plugins in use at the same time she will blow. I purchased 2 small plastic fans at radio shack [a small cheap external fan meant to assist cooling on PC and plugs into USP ports] Seems to be too much juice going thru USP conn. and POOF! I had the distinct impression when this occurred a breaker had popped in the 360 .One fan works fine tho and does seem to dump er down 2 or 3 degrees.Of course KEEP WELL VENTILATED!

#6 "unwarranted"? Nothing about a $400 piece of hardware dying for no reason less than 8 weeks after purchase is warranted.
Sadly, your good experience is the exception and not the rule. My experience is closer to #12, but even worse. After buying a brand new HDTV I hooked up my 360 and it promptly locked up. Red Lights of Death persisted on reboot and through all of the troubleshooting steps listed at that page. I too called MS Support and they shipped out a return box. I sent it off for repair on a Monday. I received an email allerting me that they had received my 360 for repair and would email me when it shipped out for return. Without sending that email, MS sent my repaired unit back via DHL who promptly left it on my doorstep with no signature while I was out of town. This is against my building's delivery policy (all packages to be left in Manager's office if resident isn't home), MS policy, and even DHL policy. This was the 3rd week of December, meaning I had my 360 for 2.5 weeks before it crapped out. Surpising no one, it was stolen from my doorstep before I returned.
After weeks upon weeks of dealing with MS and DHL I was finally shipped a replacement 360 about 10 days ago, a full month plus since it was lost. This one arrived via UPS, confirming the report the Xbox Support supervisor gave me that DHL had lost dozens of 360s in this manner and MS had switched carriers.
Sadly, the replacement is a core. Since they believed my issue involved the HDD I was instructed to include mine when I sent it in for repair. Upon calling to get a replacement HDD sent, I was informed that it will be another 3-4 weeks before it's sent out. When/If it finally arrives in late Feburary, MS will have had my 360 4 times as long as I have. I'm also in the same boat as #14, having lost all of my save games, downloads, etc. In the meantime, since I can't save or go online, I'm stuck with an overpriced and underperforming DVD player.
I've been very disappointed with how this entire ordeal has been handled. A polite and calm email to Major Nelson, the public online face of Xbox, wasn't even dignified with a form letter response. No attempt to compensate me for lost time, inconvience, etc has been offered, in fact I have had to call and request that Xbox Live fees be refunded. Twice. The call center staff are either extremely nice but helpless ("Everything is handled at the service center, we're still waiting for them to do something") or rude morons who can't even comprehend the pages worth of notes on the ticket detailing my ordeal.
Congratulations that your repair was prompt and easy, but don't discount it for the rest of us with MS migraines.
Mikey @ Jan 30th 2006 2:59PM
Seriously, why are any of you buying this thing? Would you buy a car if it broke over normal wear and tear? Would you buy that same car if it stopped operating over a minor fender-bender?
The 360 was rushed into production without adequate testing -- bottom line. What's worse are Microsoft's indignant denials that anything is wrong. I'l bet every current 360 owner has asked themself at least once, "When is mine going to die?"
BBXboy @ Jan 30th 2006 3:20PM
#6: My Xbox died (3 red lights, lots of ventilation - just a faulty unit) on Nov. 24. I ended up going through the following:
1.Call 1-800-4myxbox
2.get a repair order number with the assurance that an overnight box was on its way
3.wait 2 days, call again to find out where the box is and receive assurance that the box is on its way
5. wait 2 more days and call again, told the box is on its way
6. 2 days later call back and speak with supervisor - assurances box is definitely on its way now
7. 2 days later call back - supervisor has no idea what's going on and can't help (!)
8. go back to step 7, repeat endlessly
I ended up having to go back to my retailer and demand that they honor their replacement policy on faulty products (which they weren't going to do until I called their head office). My 'overnight' box from Microsoft finally arrived on January 16th - almost 2 months after the initial call. Needless to say I tossed it in the trash.
Fast? Simple? Efficient? Not.

#17: In Canada faulty Xbox360's are replaced with new units, not refurbs or repaired units (or so I've been told by both MS and a regional distributer).
KKL @ Jan 30th 2006 3:48PM
Yeah, given our experience with 360, and this is wisdom that only time can reveal, we wouldn't have bought it. I would advise waiting until we see what PS3 has to offer. If PS3 sucks, then great, buy a 360, but you're not missing too much in the mean time by not owning one.
matthew @ Jan 30th 2006 4:06PM
Well, I wish I even had an xbox 360 to worry about breaking. I STILL can't find one in nyc. The Best Buy in midtown, across from my job has told me they continue to only recieve 1-3 units a week, at odd times of day from a seperate delivery service than their "Best Buy" delivery trucks. So once that third manufacturing plant is online, does that mean Best Buy will be recieving a massive 2-6 xbox's a week? Oh goodie! Why is the universe keeping me away from playing Kameo? Ah well, as long as I have one in time for Elder Scrolls.

#s 25 and 17 : I am BC CANADA and you are right about the straight across replacement. I got 2 360s at launch [self and daughter] The dauts. lasted exactly 1 mo. and it was red lite [on power brick[!]] then scoured game then no go. So I phoned Future Shop they said bundle it up, bring it in-we have 1 left. No problem! I was in the store exactly 10 min. By the way a little tip to those who are considering a purchase-I have been thru several launches before-get a store credit card and put it on time if you can and PURCHASE AT LEAST A 2 YEAR EXT. WARRANTY OR 3 IF POSSIBLE!! So as long as you are covered you can do the exchange far as I know, at least with F.S.[Very good to deal with so far] Again most importantly-get that extended warranty!
Mike @ Jan 30th 2006 4:56PM
I love my 360. I've had no problems. Everything has worked as advertised (and that goes for everyone that I know that has one). I have never worried about my Xbox breaking. But if it did, knowing that the system will be replaced immediately makes me feel good. Several people here are saying wait for PS3. Funny, I remember all of the hate posts about dead pixels and buttons sticking on the PSP when it was released. And guess what...Sony did NOT replace those units for most people. I'm not hating on Sony, but you have to give Microsoft credit for digging into their deep pockets and trying to do the right thing with customer service. Replacing defective systems (even systems that are defective due to customer error) costs a lot of money, especially when they could be selling those systems in stores where there is still a high demand. And to do all of this with overnight shipping. Wow. I just don't understand how people can't look at this as a positive thing. If rival companies Sony and Nintendo offer me the same replacement service when I buy their systems later on this year, I will be very pleased.
bearattack79 @ Jan 30th 2006 5:27PM
This is the wave of the future, the new consoles are very fragile. You cant kick them over, smack them and throw the controller like the old days.
You are crazy to think the PS3 will be any different, these things are very high tech. Keep the dog away from them, and there not for a kids rec room.
I bet you any money that the New nintendo will be a bit more robust, but the PS3 and 360 will be the most fragile.
Rare Hare @ Jan 30th 2006 5:53PM
BBXboy (#24):
tossed it in the trash? riiiiiight. i'm sure you tossed your replacement Xbox 360 in the trash, just because you had to deal with crappy customer service.
Tiberius Jones @ Jan 30th 2006 5:53PM
I've talked to many (at least 15) different people online on Xbox live who have sent their units back for replacement and only one guy had any difficulty, and MS gave him a HDD AND two FREE wireless controllers to compensate for the exra time it took to get his core system back.
Sounds to me like some people need to learn to pay attention to the details when filling out forms and giving delivery information.
Fortunately, I've had NO problems with my 360, and since I don't do anything the manual doesn't recommend like moving the system while its running, stacking stuff on or next to it, or pulling the plug, (ALWAYS use a good Surge protector with ANY electronic device) I don't expect to.
2-4% is the normal defective rate for new electronics products, and its going to be no different for the PS3, as evidenced by all the defective ps2's that were sold. The difference is, Sony doesn't treat their customers as well as MS. With a PS3, if something goes wrong, you are stuck dealing with your retailer. With an Xbox or 360, Microsoft fixes the problem themselves...and for free. Nintendo traditionally has a lower defect rate for home consoles, but that is largely due to the fact that they are releasing OLDER technology that has already been through the "breaking-in" period.
I will likely buy a PS3, but I love my 360 NOW!

My, my what a temper. Struck a nerve? hehe *struck nerves again while cackling gleefully*
Perhaps you'd like to clear your head and look at my way: I have all consoles and I'd like to have the latest ASAP. $499 isn't cheap, for a console. Not to mention investing in other stuff like HDTV, just to experience the whole package.
And here comes report of faulty 360s, at $499 and carrying the MS and Xbox name I expect it to be at the same quality level as the original Xbox. I DON'T CARE IF IT WAS RELEASE WORLDWIDE AT THE SAME PERIOD, because frankly it's not my freaking problem: That's MS'. So if they can't handle the heat then maybe they should've focused on releasing on the US first if it means a negligible fault rate.
Didn't you read all of my post? I hope you didn't stop reading when you read "WTF? You mean it's that easy to break a $499 machine?! IMHO that's a very good reason not to buy one". Cause that would be dumb.
I also said it may be more of an exception than the norm. Didn't you understand that I was giving the benefit of the doubt, and that maybe this was all blown out of proportion (like what happened during the Xbox launch)? Of course you do!
But if you feel that I should have the honor of being splashed with your angst. Then load up Halo 2 of your shiny 360 and see you online!

JROMZ03 - Hey man sorry Im at work... But the previous gen was alot less high tech and required less caution. I will own all systems, but the thing is $499.99 means be carefull... These posts are mostly anti 360 due to the pending launch of Ps3, and it getting tired. I remember a link way back showing a MS rep showing off how the green light will change position depending on how the unit was positioned, he was doing it while the power was on. I hear all of these claims of the 360 scratching disks on the outer rim, well when you tip it over during gameplay thats what you get, when you kick your power supply out the back its not good, no surge protector also bad. Im not saying there is no issues but Sony fanboys are spreading lies. If your going to buy one of these next gen systems take basic precaution, get a surge protector, keep the kids away from it... Its not like the old days when blowing on it and smashing it on the ground will fix it. READ THE MANUAL... I wish I could get online but I live way up north in Thunder Bay Ontario and I cant get a high speed connection yet. Sucks to be me... But soon they say. Peace...

"We aren't suppose to get mad that unplugging our system kills it? That accidently bumping it can kill it and/or ruin your game disk at the same time?"
Dude, it's common sense NOT to unplug ANY electrical device while it's turned on...unless it's frozen to the point where you have no choice. I've got my 360 on a surge protector (your a tard if you don't) and I've had the power go out and my 360 just keeps on trucking. NO ISSUES since purchase.
As far as "bumping" the system goes...nice way to exaggerate the truth to make it sound like your disc will be fucked if you "bump" the console. The correct statement should be "we shouldn't have to worry about our discs being scratched if we knock the console on its side while it's running in the vertical position, or just fucking shake the hell out of the thing"
Here's a clue! Don't stand it up vertically where it can be knocked over! Who would have thought to put it on it's side so it can't be knocked over! That's just fucking genious! This is retarded, blaming MS for your accident is just a whiny cop-out. This is like bitching at sony because your cd got scratched inside your car stereo when you wrecked your fucking car. You knocked the console over, which caused the disc to get scratched. The moral of the story? Take better care of your shit. My 360 is sitting on it's side, on a shelf above my TV, with ample ventilation space. Safe and sound where the only way it can get knocked over is if a fucking tornado blasts through my house.
As far as the shipping issues go. The majority of this stuff sounds like DHL's fault. To the guy who got sent a core system, or to anyone who got a 360 that was DOA. That sucks, and you have every right to be upset with MS, but look at it this way, there handling the situation 800 times better than sony did with the faulty disc drives/lasers on the PS2's. At least MS isn't charging you for repair 2 months after you bought the console like sony did to me. Just to be safe I paid $40 for a year warranty at EB, so if my 360 does fuck up, I can go in and get a replacement free of charge, and they even let me keep my HDD.
The truth of the matter is, the vast majority of people out there DO have good, working 360's. I don't personally know anyone who has had a bad one. But obviously those with faulty systems are going to be ALOT more loud about it than those with working ones. You have to look at things on the brightside, while it sucks being without your 360, at least your not being charged to have it repaired.

"We aren't suppose to get mad that unplugging our system kills it?"
Ummm...go spend $10,000+ on a "pro" rack server. One of the first things they are going to tell you is to do power backup management because this, much like most MS bashing, has nothing to do with Microsoft, Xbox or anything beyond basic electric engineering. I know this contradicts the very popular, "Bill G. is the beast" theories, but wucha gonna do...
