this is what I miss about old consoles (pre-x-box), never once did the devellopers have access to patch their product. they made games/systems right the first time, look at PSP its patched every day it seems, already at 1.6 is it? 6 patches in a year, what if you don't have internet access? you can't get your system running properly? What if you play at a lan, and your system isnt patched but everyone else's is? will you be able to play against them?

what if you don't have a Hard Drive, where is the patch applied to?

will there be games that require X-Box360 Vers. 1.90 but dont work properly with 1.90b? will they test every patch on every game? some games on PC I need to drop the DirectX levels, can I do that on the Xbox?

what a completely useless patch. They should of addressed the stuff we all are complaining about.

these include:

Lack of download information (like speed and time remaining)
Lack of downloads in the back ground ability
Lack of Queuee for downloads
Lack of more then 1on1 private voice chat
Lack of DIvX/XVID support (they should have this for at least the folks who have windows media center edition)

What about the solw loading when clicking send message etc to friends? Dont forget the demos of live arcade games showing up in your achivements list.

WOW, If I was unaware of this update and my brother applied it for me, I would log on to my xbox never even knowing it was updated. What a useless waste of time Microsoft. If it took you 2 months to make this, its probably gonna take 3 years to see downloading in the background.

apparently none of you had all your game saves deleted by a flaw in the dashboard. It is really frustrating to work on your platinum career (PGR3), or any particular achievement that requires a certain level of progress through the game and see it all go away when it wasn't even your fault. I think it's a necessary update as it prevents this from happening to other people. Call it a hotfix if you want, but I believe it's better to have it sooner than later. Just my 2 cents.

Draco,

The patch isn't applied to the harddrive. The dashboard is stored on a 2mb flashable chip inside the console.

Games don't depend on dashboard features, and I doubt any updates will add new features. Games interact with API's that have a static definition.

First off, why isnt this on the 360 fanboy blog? They havent had an update of any kind in days.

But second of all, quit your griping, the dashboard is completely functional, and I for one never use the dashboard very often anyways. The darn thing plays video games, thats why you bought it. You didnt pay 400 dollars to flip through the blades. I'm not griping on the media functionality, which I like with my media center PC, but the actual dash itself is 100% acceptable to me.

And thirdly, comments like #12... no wonder you didn't leave a name, you don't even have a 360. But for those of us who DO have a 360, lets stop whining about the dashboard and wonder where our great games are! I still dont even have a decent Live title to play with my friends from the area. Dont make me wait for Halo 3, make sure Ghost Recon is the online game that it SHOULD be, with great lobbies and great gameplay.

Still no Divx?!?

Microsoft pratically wasted the player capabilities of the 360 then. 95% of videos are encoded in divx, not in wmv.

Xbox 360 is useless as a multimedia hub. Let's hope for the PS3...

Damn can people complain about nothing. Would you rather a patch have not been released? Im sure for people who dont have Live this patch will be included in upcoming games.

Patches are there to improve our next gen experience, do you think Sonys next system wont be patched much like the PSP? As these consoles become more advanced, expect it. And as for Microsoft they did an excellent job for the 360's OS. If your expecting Nintendo or Sony to top a software companys OS dont get your hopes up, cause youll be in for a big dissapointment.

Just wanted to point out that the update also kills the kiosks disc. You now get a disc error when you put it in. I have a feeling the update was more to stop hackers then it was for fixing bugs. I wouldn't be surprized if there is another update this month to add the features that were talked about.

Worthless update, the main issues have not been fixed.

I find it funny that my 233Mhz 64MB RAM laptop can download files on the background, while a three-3.2Ghz-cores-512MB DDR3 RAM cannot.

One will say to not complain, but these problems are being clamored by virtually all X360 users, they should be priority.

haha. I totally agree. As soon as I came to joystiq I quickly realized that most of the gamers on here are nothing but whiny bitches. All they do is COMPLAIN and TRASH TALK. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. They are never satisfied, and something is always wrong with everything.

Guess what, nothings perfect. Did your 360 play games before this update? Did it after? If it does then what are you bitching about? You bought it to play GAMES. I will admit that the whole losing gamesaves thing after erasing a profile was a good fix. I fell victim to this, but that's partly my fault for starting a free 30 day live account and playing under it before transfering my original account over.

Guess what else? There will be more updates. So in the mean time...why not play games on the 360 (you know, that thing that you bought it for) instead of worrying about why the latest update didn't live up to your extremely high standards, that will never be met, because like I said, all you people do is BITCH about everything. Would you prefer MS didn't issue any updates at all? Maybe they shouldn't, because it seems no matter what any of these companies do you fucks can never be pleased.

Lorenz Penn. How can you claim that the Xbox 360 failed as a multimedia hub just because it does not play one file format? I am using my Xbox 360 to connect to my Media Center 2005 computer. It is working great. I love being able to pull shows that I have recorded on my MCE computer. I can also pull pictures and music. I have so far found usage for all these features during holiday parties.

I do not use Divx. I have no DVDs encoded with divx. I have no home movies encoded with divx. To be honest, the only people I know that use divx are the ones downloading movies. So I am not put off by the lack of this feature. Now if you really wanted divx, then I understand there are work around available on the net. The Xbox 360 does not have to support a specific product, as long as you can make your MCE computer support it. I am running Google Earth and XM radio on my Xbox 360 because of enterprising internet programmers who have added this functionality to MCE. I am currently working on X10 extensions on the Xbox 360 (for which there is no native support).

Thryon. I'm not caliming that the Xbox 360 failed as a multimedia hub just because it does not play one file format. I'm caliming that the Xbox 360 failed as a multimedia hub because it plays only 2 file formats, wmv and mpeg, that are totaly useless for the average user, and left out dozens of mainstreams codecs like divx, xvid, quicktime, FFDShow MPEG-4, etc. that even a $39 philips dvd player like the DVP642 supported years ago.

All people in the world got on their hard disk videos, trailers, fansubs, etc. in DIVX, XVID or MOV (quicktime).

Check anybody download folder and you will find gigabytes of divx and mov, but very little wmv files.

WMV is most used for tiny low res streaming videos, nobody ever downloads a wmv file.

2 codecs out of hundreds is TOO LITTLE. Check sites like www.free-codecs.com and you will understand why the xbox 360 is (for now) everything but a multimedia hub.

^^ Most people do appreciate the updates, but unfortunately they don't go on message boards and say so. The majority of the people who go on the boards go on to bitch bitch bitch- so it looks like more people are upset than is really the case. Look I wish that MS had put a lot of other features in that aren't there and the background download would be nice, but cmon, calm down. This is still primarly a game console so everything not game related, imo, is secondary. Which would you rather have, some update that fixes/adds some feature you won't use 95% of the time or have Oblivion out now? Yep, me too.

Google up "Videora" for your Divx fix w/ MCE. It's not as beautiful as if there was native Divx support, but face it, PS3 won't have Divx either.

Reason: No retail movies are encoded in Divx.

I got home, and decided to updage my dashboard while I went out to do shopping. Since most complained about the lack of background downloading and that they could not play while updating the dashboard, I figured that it would be better to download while I was doing something else rather than just twiddle my tumbs.....

lo and behold the whole update was about 30 seconds. Come on poeple..why complain about a 30 second download. I mean, if you need soemthing to do, go and get a drink of water and the download was done. Now I know that some are complaining about downtime while downloading a demo. Then do as myself, set it to download when at work or when you go to bed. All in all, not a big deal.

One question comes to mind as I read complaint after complaint. Sure you did not have to "patch" the NES or Sega Master system...but you cannot compare the Xbox 360 to such simple, game consoles. The dashboard alone on the Xbox 360 is more complex than any of the games that played on those primative consoles. Consoles evolve, and become more complex. Does anyone here own a PSP? Does Sony not update that product? By the way, MS did not force this update on me, I was asked to accept the updates or not. If you are not happy, then do not upate. I am sure there will be other updates ( and other post complaining about them) in the future and I look forward to them. It is about time that we did not need to purchase a SLIM version of a console to have the latest updates.

MS does test every game with the latest software. Every 360 game, every Xbox Live Arcade Game and all of the demos.

They don't just chuck out these updates and their QA has been good for Xbox so far.

DivX support (or quicktime, xvid, etc.) will never be included in an update because these formats compete with Microsoft's own WMV format. MS has no intention of ever supporting these, for good business reasons.

NES, SNES, genesis, and other classic consoles were much more simple devices and weren't under constant attack from hackers, so they didn't need updating. Hence, no patches. They did, however, sometimes have revisions to their hardware.

This patch was small. It took almost no time to download on a normal (read: cable) internet connection. I barely had time to get a soda out of the fridge.

These days, a perfect release is impossible. They don't know about every little thing that is wrong with the system before they release it. A lot of the bugs are found after release. If they had waited to make fixes like this before release, you wouldn't have an Xbox 360 yet. Consider this before saying you'd rather it be done before release rather than have it patched later.

As was mentioned, fixing COD2 is not Microsoft's responsibility. The developer has to do this. Microsoft couldn't if they wanted to.

I agree that downloads should be able to be queued and run in the background, but this is a minor feature that may show up sometime later. This was never promised by anyone, so don't whine when a particular update doesn't have this function. Most people who have Xbox 360s have other systems, and they all have TVs so I'm sure they can find something else to do while downloading the Narnia trailer.

This update is a good thing. Would you rather they never update the system? Of course not! Whichever bugs they fixed with this are now bugs you'll never have to deal with and all it cost you was maybe a couple of minutes of your time, if even.

Of course, none of this matters because there will always be those who would bash and make jokes of Microsoft for feeding a starving child, just because they're Microsoft.

eek... Didn't mean for this to be such a big post...
