This is coming from a Nintendo fan boy....

If Cisco (The whore of all communications) bought Nintendo. The console gaming world would be dead to me. :'(

That would leave me with only one option......go outside and get a tan. /cry

Nintendo turned Microsoft down, I don't expect Nintendo will be bought any time soon.

"Joystiq's resident business analyst"?

Pffffft...HAHAHA!!! Making up titles for ourselves now are we?

Seriously tho...Nintendo wouldn't let themselves be bought up by Cisco. Nintendo is first a and primarliy a gaming/toy company. Cisco is wasting their time even considering it.

Didn't Nintendo just recently buy back a lot of it's shares to prevent being bought out?

I think this is here just because it was on Slashdot. Find some news, not speculation from other websites.

Nintendo isn't just a company, it's a way of life for alot of people. I don't think Nintendo would ever sell. If they did, it would be one big humongous price tag. I actually think that Nintendo should probably buy Cisco, I think Nintendo is way more valuable then Cisco will every be.

well Cisco would try and profit more in America with nintendo. This would cause nitnendo to become mnore xboxish. + everything would be fully multiplayer and connectable in every way possible. I think thats a somewhat good idea, however, nintendo would never sell to them. Just because Cisco could affor Nintendo, does not mean nintendo would sell.

If that where the case, im sure Microsoft would just of bought nintendo instead of making the xbox because They could certainly afford the company.

Yeah right. If Microsoft can't buy out Nintendo (which they tried to do a couple years ago and would still like to do), then nobody can buy out Nintendo. Whomever wrote that article obviously knows little about the industry.

If anything there will be a profitable partnership. That will be a win win for both sides. That just may be in the works.

I'm not too familiar with Cisco's business practices, but I think it would be a nice investment for them. It would also help Nintendo get a stronger hold in online gaming.

Highly unlikely, but if it did happen, I doubt they would be any major changes to Nintendo, except for a heavier emphasis on online games, which is happening already.

now, with that out of the way. i have to agree "joystiq's resident business analyst" but, not from the historical m&a standpoint.

i just don't think there's a cultural fit.

there is no way in hell a company that's been around for 100+ years -- and is a staunchly proud japanese company -- will allow any kind of merger. even if cisco wanted to buy them, nintendo would rather go bankrupt than sell out to a western company.

I see Apple buying out Microsoft before Nintendo would ever even consider selling...

Ok...maybe not that extreme, but I doubt it'll happen.

Nintendo is a pubicly held company. It's not always a matter of selling. Sometimes you are forcibly bought out. A cisco buyout could be a response to MS competition. A pre-emptive buyout would prevent MS from obtaining Nin. A MS-Nin combo could produce large amounts of profit that could then be used to fight cysco. BTW nin is not a way of life. It is a company that is in the business of making profits just like everyone else. They are currently being severely squeezed. The Rev needs to be a major success and #3 may not be good enough. Judge by the message boards, nin fans seem to be big on talk and praise and small on purchases. The rev is going to need the latter...quickly.

Dear Joystiq/Engadget:
I stopped reading /. for a reason. Please stop posting their crap here. I was much happier with the content here before "stories" from /. cross-posted. You guys find the news on your own just fine. You don't need /.'s help. Thanks.

shigeru miyamoto has publically stated he will never work for anyone other than nintendo. that means, if he ends up having to work for cisco, he's out.

no shiggy. no nintendo.

well... there'd be a nintendo with no fanboys. wouldn't that be a sight?

The one thing I can say for the acquisition (even though it's likely a garbage story) is that it would make a lot of sense if they could merge the Revolution and the Scientific-Atlanta set top boxes.

Calm down. They aren't suggesting that Cisco IS going to buy Nintendo, but rather they WANT to.

I really think it would benefit both companies if it ever did happen in the long run. Cisco makes great products; as does Nintendo. Nintendo could use the networks available through Cisco to expand their options. Despite our love for Nintendo, they really could use some expansion.

And Cisco would be stupid to completely interfere with anything Nintendo does in relation to games and IP.

to kuroshi squeezed how? their profits are up more than double vs this quarter last year. (so nin fans are not small on purchases) - #3 in the console arena or not they will find a way to make money, that's what they do, like you said they are in the business of making profits and right now they are doing pretty well, so well in fact many financial types expect them to adjust their fiscal outlook for the year. they've been around for over 100 years! they aren't going anywhere.

MS want to buy Nintendo also but can't. So no fears there. Sources? It was in EGM around E3 2004.

Anyway... Cisco ruined Linksys after they bought them. I'd hate to see them ruin Nintendo as well.

I've been in IT for 9 years. Linksys came around and their stuff just worked great. Now they release buggy hardware drivers and firmware.

It really seems to me like this story and the earlier one about PS3's response to XBOX Live suggest a partnership between Cisco and Sony--not a merger, mind you. If this happens, then maybe Sony will be able to compete with MS in the online gaming theatre. Oh the possiblities!
