Duke Nukem Forever "in full production"
Yes, folks, it's still alive and kicking - everyone's favorite vaporware is "in full production" according to George Broussard, co-founder of 3D Realms. In an interview with 1up, towards the end, Broussard chats about the status of Duke Nukem Forever, the unfortunately-apt title to the game over a decade in development. Hail to the King, baby!According to Broussard, "there's a lot that's finished. All the guns are finished. Most of the creatures are finished...we're just basically pulling it all together and trying to make it fun."
So, there you have it, an actual status update on Duke Nukem Forever. If they get their act together, 2006 may be the year pigs fly - then again, we predicted that Duke Nukem Forever still would not come out in 2006, and whose to argue with us?

More power to them for taking their time - heck, even if the technology is a few years old, I'll still buy it - it's Duke! Who doesn't have fond memories of the first three games?
LinkerX @ Feb 1st 2006 4:37PM
I think the store I preordered this at is out of business now lol
Soothsayer @ Feb 1st 2006 4:41PM
"[W]e're just basically ... trying to make it fun."
That's a losing strategy. The underlying fun-factor should have been conceived at the beginning of the project, not towards the end. How often does a set of finished pieces come together and, voila, it's FUN? It's near impossible and a total crapshoot.
youngsir @ Feb 1st 2006 4:42PM
yea i agree with #1. i'm really hoping this game comes out. everything about it will probably be outdated but that doesn't mean i won't enjoy it.
Tucker @ Feb 1st 2006 4:42PM
This game was announced before I got to high school. I've now had a BA and been working full time for over a year.
Fuxx @ Feb 1st 2006 4:44PM
Sweet. 10 years to make guns and enemies. Should only be another. . what. . 50 years to design levels and "make it fun". I can't wait!
Tokamak @ Feb 1st 2006 4:45PM
It's not yet the 1st of April.
Paul @ Feb 1st 2006 4:53PM
Ha! These guys make Rare look like amateurs.
Bombshell @ Feb 1st 2006 5:01PM
Guns and most creatures are done? If that's where they're at after 8 years and counting, I somehow doubt that this will be an '06 title.
cyberfelon @ Feb 1st 2006 5:07PM
I don't understand how anybody is supposed to make money off a game that takes this long to make.
C. Grant @ Feb 1st 2006 5:09PM
"...we're just basically pulling it all together and trying to make it fun."
That's called game design. I would have hoped that stage would have been crossed many years ago.
If they've spent the past umpteen years working on guns and monsters, we'll be lucky to get a 3006 release.
Deuce @ Feb 1st 2006 5:10PM
Heh, hearing about Duke Nukem Forever again gives me fond memories of high school... and I've been out of college for over four years.
Seriously, now, who is still paying these guys?
Jago @ Feb 1st 2006 5:22PM
It's a shame it never came out in 2001 b/c the footage they had at the time for the trailer was actually pretty nice.
Brad R. @ Feb 1st 2006 5:32PM
Agreed Number 11. You don't start designing a great game by making the graphical components first. You figure out the gameplay how everything is going to add up to a cohesive experience. Then you worry about the implementation and the window dressing. Sounds pretty unprofessional, even if the interview was casual. >_>
anonymous coward @ Feb 1st 2006 5:39PM

I think you're reading too much into this. "Trying to make it fun" can mean tweaking game balance, adding a new boss, changing a level layout that didn't quite work out as well as the original idea suggested.
I can think of plently of games that would've been great had the designers stopped and asked themselves if a particular element was as fun as they hoped, then took some time to fix it.
Vagabond Artist @ Feb 1st 2006 5:50PM
AWESOME!!!!!
If you had told me last year that George would be formally announcing full production on DKF in February 2006 I would have laughed and carried on.
This is great news.
So now begins the speculation as to which platform we are going to be playing it on.
How awesome would it be if it were to come out for Revolution?
Jago @ Feb 1st 2006 5:59PM
Yay for amateur trying to tell professionals what to do.
/end sarcasim
Seriously...just b/c he did an interview and said something doesn't mean he spilled the beans on everything that has been done.
The game design and the concept artwork are 2 different things. Weapon, item, level, etc. design changes just as much as the game script and design doc do.
aaron @ Feb 1st 2006 6:14PM
what exactly have 3d realsm been working on this whole time? DNF can't have been their sole object of attention!
Dante @ Feb 1st 2006 6:37PM
what about half life 2? it came out really late but an excellent game
Nin10dude @ Feb 1st 2006 7:22PM
Who knew that Mother 3 was in development longer than Duke Nukem Forever has been?
12 years vs. 9.
SuperSunny @ Feb 1st 2006 7:40PM
Well, many of you guys are assuming from simple text. These guys did not have to be working on this game 24/7, they might've stopped production but continued it, we don't know, but I sure as hell can't wait for it, I love Duke.
Dude @ Feb 1st 2006 7:58PM
"So now begins the speculation as to which platform we are going to be playing it on."
We'll be playing it on the Infinium Phantom of course! Duke Nukem Forever will be a launch title for it.

I could play Duke Nukem 1 with my eyes closed just by listening to the sound. I probably still can.

Hmmm I'll beleive it when I see it.. I hope they followed the evolving graphic technology.. Don't want to play a directx 7 game ;)

We ARE playing "Duke Nukem Forever" right now!
The "forever" refers to how long we'll be waiting for the game to be released!
spiro harvey @ Feb 1st 2006 9:22PM
Hey, maybe it'll be released on the Phantom console first!
M @ Feb 1st 2006 10:11PM
Where do they get the fnding to keep making this game? They should have been bankrupt by now.
Cmills @ Feb 1st 2006 10:18PM
All of this does not matter. I will buy the game when it is delivered no matter what peeps say. I have been waiting forever it seems for it to come to fruition, so blah blah. I just can't wait to see the trailer that I watched over and over come to life in game form. Even if it dissapoints me it won't matter. I will still revel in the world that Duke has provided us over the years and it will be a welcome addition to the Duke legacy.
Titanium @ Feb 2nd 2006 12:19AM
Finally I can dust off my Pentium II that has been waiting for this game for a long time. I hope DNF will still run on Windows 95. Does anyone have the VooDoo drivers?
Roomba Review @ Feb 2nd 2006 1:38AM
Ahh, isn't it wonderful to be able to live forever off of licensing the Duke Nukem brand?
Seriously, 3DRealms would have gone out of business years ago if they had to rely on actually earning their paychecks! I loved Dukem Nukem 3D. Couldn't wait to play Duke Nukem Forever, but it's gotten to the point where if it is ever released, it will make Daikatana look like Half Life 3!!
Quite simply, 3DRealms earns money by licensing the name to companies that actually produce games. They don't actually do anything themselves anymore. Apparantly, no one in the company actually knows how to do anything if it isn't using the build engine...
cap-n-crunch @ Feb 2nd 2006 3:05AM
This game looks cool. never played a duke nukem game though. The only one I ever rember seeing for console was a N64 version and it was in the bargin bin. Was this ever made for ps1 or was this mainly a PC game series like Seriuos sam?
Greg Loscombe @ Feb 2nd 2006 3:25AM
Well, from working in the industry, the "making it fun" part is often just balance tuning. When you work that close to a product, and I can only imagine what its like after 10 years (2 was bad enough) - its difficult to remain objective to whats fun and whats not (you only 'see' technology and bugs - including your QA department) - time for a step back, get in some fresh eyes, focus groups, new gameplay testers, and get this game out for all us deserving fans.
Fingers crossed it matches their e3 trailer from 2001, which, to this day is still my fav all time game trailer (from a production point of view, and a "wow, that looks cool" view)
Zsavior @ Feb 2nd 2006 4:22AM
Listen this game isn't coming out till we say the special words! KLATU.....VERATA....NIC..NIC..Damn what is the last word!
Sandbagger @ Feb 2nd 2006 5:06AM
Say what you will, I'll definately still buy this. Even if it only looks as good as the last screenshot I saw (3 or 4 years ago now, I think), it should still be a nice looking game. I remember thinking they were the first FPS screenshots I could see a character's pores.
Also, I'm hoping that the longest FPS development time of all time equates to longest FPS singleplayer playing time. With that I'll be a happy customer.
Also, I hope I can give female npcs cash to see their boobies. teehee
Sandbagger @ Feb 2nd 2006 5:15AM
Once when I was playing Duke Nukem 3d, my Mum saw it and lost her nut. I remember thinking, "damn, there's no way she's gonna let me get the next in the series".
Now I'm 23. hahaha
Bob Ch @ Feb 2nd 2006 5:21AM
In response to cap-n-crunch, there was a PS1 version & a version for the Gameboy Advance. I have both versions, & still play them. The PS1 version is the closest to the original PC version in terms of graphics & the levels included in the game.
Andrew Lenahan @ Feb 2nd 2006 6:23AM
I find it interesting that Duke Nukem Forever and Mother 3 (Earthbound), both games that started life more than a decade ago, are officially confirmed within a week of each other!
the_game_master @ Feb 2nd 2006 6:24AM
to 31 and 34
Duke Nukem Forever is suppose to follow the PC releases as a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D (1996), Duke Nukem II (1993), and Duke Nukem (1991). I who use to dream that this game would come out don't think we'll see this game this year nor next year.
Scowl @ Feb 2nd 2006 6:30AM
@28: Funding is simple... There have been other titles 3D Realms have been in to which have done very well... Need I say more then Max Payne? :)

The latest Duke game from the people who brought you Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem Forever is sure to please every Duke fan, as well as every 3D action fan out there!
Coming "When it's done" from 3D Realms for the PC.
Rob @ Feb 2nd 2006 7:35AM
Making it fun now, oh , who cares, so much hype. Blah blah, Dune Nukem was fun, years ago.
Its liek Valve re-packaging counter strike as counter strike source, who cares. I wasnt original IP's , now sequelitus.
DavoX @ Feb 2nd 2006 8:15AM
Actually people that think this game has been under development for 10 years and with THE SAME ENGINE is a complete idiot and ignorant. The game has switched engines 2 times , first it used the quake 2 engine, then unreal and then unreal tournament (its the engine they're using right now) which it DOESNT look like unreal tournament at all right now, only code thats been left from UT is the network code, all else is Completely new. The game has been in development with this engine for 4 years, only thing that is 10 years old is the IDEA of the game, period.
You know? it doesnt hurt to actually SEARCH for info or even check out the 3dRealms forums before making stupid and ignorant statements that only serve to make yourself look like a n00b.
J-Fu @ Feb 2nd 2006 8:43AM
I wonder if Duke Nukem Forever 2 will be released before the Duke Nukem Forever???

They haven't done anything worth discussing in over six years. I'm sure THAT looks good on George's resume.

MrTroy @ Feb 2nd 2006 10:10AM
DavoX... I thought Duke Nukem Forever was being developed at the same time as Quake II. And then after Quake II came out did they decide to use the engine.
Well with Mother 3, Duke Nukem Forever and the Phantom all being announced to come out this year. I think 2006 is gonna be rather interesting.
