Actually people that think this game has been under development for 10 years and with THE SAME ENGINE is a complete idiot and ignorant. The game has switched engines 2 times , first it used the quake 2 engine, then unreal and then unreal tournament (its the engine they're using right now) which it DOESNT look like unreal tournament at all right now, only code thats been left from UT is the network code, all else is Completely new. The game has been in development with this engine for 4 years, only thing that is 10 years old is the IDEA of the game, period.

You know? it doesnt hurt to actually SEARCH for info or even check out the 3dRealms forums before making stupid and ignorant statements that only serve to make yourself look like a n00b.

They haven't done anything worth discussing in over six years. I'm sure THAT looks good on George's resume.

DavoX... I thought Duke Nukem Forever was being developed at the same time as Quake II. And then after Quake II came out did they decide to use the engine.

Well with Mother 3, Duke Nukem Forever and the Phantom all being announced to come out this year. I think 2006 is gonna be rather interesting.

Actually it's genius. Everyone who wanted to buy it in 1998 will still have the urge to buy it (especially since they remind everyone that's it's still alive now and then) and if they make lots of hype all the new players will buy it as well. If they can keep this going for a couple of years they might have 3 generations that want to buy it...

#44:
Who cares if it's the same engine or a different one?
The mere act of changing engine is silly, if not downright stupid - not to mention doing it twice.

I don't pretend to downplay the importance of doing the best one can, but at some point the Team Lead will have to make a (hard) decision and say "enough is enough".
This game has been completely rewritten (almost) from scratch twice... Unless some miracle happens, they can't possibly hope to recuperate the cost, not to mention the blood, sweat and tears.

Who cares how long its taken. Duke is a license that will live forever. If any other company dared to produce a rude american tough-nut character, it would be shot down in flames for copying duke.

I personally dont care how 'advanced' the gfx engine is. I am so sick of this 'jack up the poly count and pretend its a fresh game' mentality that gamedevs have adopted in recent times. Duke always had a little more in the 'gameplay' department than other FPS's so if thats the trend they follow, then the game will be great regardless. Damn, i still play Mortal Kombat 2 on my PS2 arcade classics DVD more than any other multiplayer game. So take another 10 years if its needed I say. Id rather a game that was late and a timeless classic than quake 14 or unreal 9 with 99 trillion polys to draw a big toe.

You know, after this much of a delay and virtual filibustering, 3DRealms could earn some serious karma back if they leaked something. ANYTHING. A monster design. A couple of screenshots. Revealing that Trent Reznor is doing the soundtrack. Just something tangible that people can point at and go "Well, damn, they ARE working on it." (By the same token: would anybody be satisfied if they DID reveal anything?)

To MrTroy:

The game wasnt announced for this year, the release date is still "When its done".

Oh and to joystiq : You didnt predict anything, you said it would never come out, not in 2006 or any year, so dont try to fix your mess, i actually clicked that link to see what you wrote back then.

over a decade? don't you usually count from the official announcement? which was spring of 97 even if you count from when the actual development was started it's still barely 9 years

I read an interview a while back where Broussard said that somewhere around 1998 they restartedt the project from scratch...and then again in 2003. In 2004 they changed Physics engines.

I think their biggest problem is that they are trying to release a game that will cause a paradigm shift, but they only have a limited staff and are struggling just to keep up with the latest technology.

One report said the game was currently 9.6gb but would be optimized as development progresses.

"38. I find it interesting that Duke Nukem Forever and Mother 3 (Earthbound), both games that started life more than a decade ago, are officially confirmed within a week of each other!"

Mother 3 was unveiled as a GBA game in 2003, and reconfirmed last year.
