GameStop has begun to take pre-orders of PS3 games, with all 32 titles currently listed priced at $59.99 and stamped with a Pre-Release ETA of 10/1/06. No word yet on console pre-orders.
Among the titles offered are a few familiar to 360 owners, including Condemned: Criminal Origins and Peter Jackson's King Kong, but most of the games on GameStop's list are Sony exclusives such as Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Vision Gran Turismo.
Wal-Mart also has a page up for the PS3, but so far it doesn't have a notice like the Revolution page telling you to "[c]ome back soon to find out when you can reserve the new Revolution online at Walmart.com." At any rate, we'll probably have to wait till May for stores to really open the console pre-order floodgates. Then the fun (and the madness) can truly begin.

A date has finally been set!
Question: Criminal Origins and King Kong? Won't those be a tad bit stale/old/outdated by October 1st?
Perhaps just so that PS3 owners don't miss anything... (?)

I can finally rest in peace.

Think about it - if one million people pre-order one software title apiece at $5, that's 5 million dollars cash that GameStop has. They can't count it as profit since it's not actually a sale transaction (no goods have changed hands). Which will be collecting interest in their banks. For nine months.
That's just for software. Last time I checked, hardware preorders at GS required a $50 minimum. Now if one million people pre-order the console...well, you do the math.

You will be able to buy any game the day the system comes out. Don't give the stores your money in advance.
Plus, I'm sure a lot of outlets will only be selling with bundles. YAY!

Oh, and, yes, I'll pay 60$ for a game :p

I mean, they've never falsified release dates on titles before. :p

Back in the early 1990's *all* SNES games were 60 dollars, some even higher. Kids nowdays don't know how good they have it.

#2 if you are an Xbox fan, don't forget that Crash Bandicoot is available for the Xbox as well. And the dozen sequels for Final Fantasy is just fine...they are all unrelated (except the few actual sequels that have popped up as of late). Other than that, I agree with your facetious take on Sony's hype-trap.
I found it interesting how this "planned launch list" compares to Microsoft's. Shall we start taking bets on how many of these games will actually be available at launch? Sony may be better poised to ensure a timely release for these titles. I wonder how many 360 titles will be available at that time? This could end up being an interesting "counter-launch" if you will.

you also have to remember the reason for the $60 price tag on Super Nintendo games was that they were catridge based (more expensive format) and at the time, the market was not as competitive as it is now and therefore, pricing was much less of an issue. The only competition was Sega and neither of them were undercutting the other to have an advantage pricewise in the market place.

How many non-hardcore gamers are going to buy games for that?
How many moms and dads are going to be cool with that?

That's a dumb statement. How many people here f*ck themselves? Don't be shy. Be a man and admit you like mother thumb and her four daughters! If its as high as I think so, Halo 3 will have lots of pre-orders by your analogy.
As for the supposed October release- we shall see.

Also, i'm no smartass, but don't you guys think that Vision Gran Tourismo and MGS4 won't be seeing 2006? The launch lineup will mainly include EA sport titles, Activision's ports, 2k Games, and King Kong of course. I'm guessing Armor Core 4, Warhawk also with a 1st party "tetris" like game.

Anyone who buys this drivel is a tool.

GameStop is having a lot of financial trouble. By getting people to preorder vaporware, they can show the accountants that the future of the company is bright.
If you think about how difficult the PS3 and Cell processor to develop for, you can see that the PS3 will have a drought of games just like the PSP.

Do you trust M$ and Sonys release dates? I don't. Keep sucking that thumb.

i could go in and preorder a PS4 right now and i almost guarantee they'd be more than happy to take it.
i still remember almost preordering The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess back in the fall, being assured that it was hitting shelves in November 13th. and just recently, when i went in there looking for NCAA 06 (which they were sold out of) the guy tries to push an NCAA 07 preorder on me. his exact words were,
"if you don't preorder, we can't guarantee that you'll be able to get it when it comes out"
i wanted to tell him that even if i DID preorder, there was no guarantee that i'd get it when it came out.
but then i probably would have gone off into a long and rambling rant about how much their corporate policies and procedures suck, and about how they gave my friend his NEW copy of mercenaries in a generic black case labeled with "MERCENARIES" written on a piece of tape in permanent marker.
i didn't though.. instead i just played a couple of demos and browsed a little while i evesdropped on their conversation about starting a J-Pop band and meeting girls on Guild Wars.
i really don't know why i still go there..
