that is one thing i have never understood. Why preorder a game? Unless it's halo or something that will have a limited supply, what's the point?

Everyone should be excited to play all of the new graphical iterations of those classic games we've grown to love. Think about it Tekken 18, Gran Turismo 4th Dimension, Crash Bandicoot 45, Devil May Cry 10, Final Fantasy Foreal This Time....Blah Blah Blah. Oh Yeah everyone don't forget to buy your two HDTVs with HDMI and 1080p resolution. And while you're at it check out those nifty eye implants on Sony's website that will allow you to see in 120 fps.

Oh, for joy!
A date has finally been set!
Question: Criminal Origins and King Kong? Won't those be a tad bit stale/old/outdated by October 1st?
Perhaps just so that PS3 owners don't miss anything... (?)

This likely means that pre-orders are now available in the stores as well. This also means that GS stands to make a metric ton of money off of in-store preorders, all without lifting a finger.

Think about it - if one million people pre-order one software title apiece at $5, that's 5 million dollars cash that GameStop has. They can't count it as profit since it's not actually a sale transaction (no goods have changed hands). Which will be collecting interest in their banks. For nine months.

That's just for software. Last time I checked, hardware preorders at GS required a $50 minimum. Now if one million people pre-order the console...well, you do the math.

I'm guessing the article means pre-order in store because I don't see where to do that on the website. Anyway, October sounds about as early as Sony can really launch the PS3 anyway, but it's interesting to see any new developments. I'm shocked to hear MGS4 has a shot at being a launch title. That's really the only announced PS3 game I'm interested in as of yet, so I guess if it is in fact a launch title, I've got another cold autumn evening waiting outside some chain store ahead of me. Crap....

I hope every reader knows that pre-ordering games is a stupid, stupid thing to do.

You will be able to buy any game the day the system comes out. Don't give the stores your money in advance.

Plus, I'm sure a lot of outlets will only be selling with bundles. YAY!

Seems odd. Means Sony has given some direction (at least on pricing). But they've said that the console / controller may still change design. Hopefully we'll have more info soon.

Oh, and, yes, I'll pay 60$ for a game :p

Why pre-order games? I never understood why people do this? Have you ever had a time where you couldn't buy a game because it was sold out? I never have...I wait to see if the game is actually good then go buy it.

Back in the early 1990's *all* SNES games were 60 dollars, some even higher. Kids nowdays don't know how good they have it.

@15 and everyone else who says preordering isn't worth it: Most of the time you are right, but that's where xbox live comes in. Since downloading the fight night demo off live, I know how the game plays and I know I want to buy it. I also downloaded the full auto demo and the game suck so I won't be buying it. The value of the 360 and its integration with live is really becoming important now. Of course, the ps3 won't have the same level of online (and no hd) so its not really an option for them.

I have already paid $60 for a couple of my 360 games. Already used to it. What is hard for me to swallow is paying $50 for a PSP game. None of the games I've played on it have deserved such pricing.

#2 if you are an Xbox fan, don't forget that Crash Bandicoot is available for the Xbox as well. And the dozen sequels for Final Fantasy is just fine...they are all unrelated (except the few actual sequels that have popped up as of late). Other than that, I agree with your facetious take on Sony's hype-trap.

I found it interesting how this "planned launch list" compares to Microsoft's. Shall we start taking bets on how many of these games will actually be available at launch? Sony may be better poised to ensure a timely release for these titles. I wonder how many 360 titles will be available at that time? This could end up being an interesting "counter-launch" if you will.

Number 18 I agree with you about Xbox Live on 360. I think it's amazing! I thought thought that Live Arcade would be lame and it's one of the best features. No way Sony can compete with Xbox Live.

@17 (djSyndrome)

you also have to remember the reason for the $60 price tag on Super Nintendo games was that they were catridge based (more expensive format) and at the time, the market was not as competitive as it is now and therefore, pricing was much less of an issue. The only competition was Sega and neither of them were undercutting the other to have an advantage pricewise in the market place.

Condemed was cancelled for the ps3 by sega, unless that has been changed. DMC, MGS, and GT4 will not make release so it's a waste to preorder those. I would however preorder the ps3 though. Shortages are not marketing strategies, they are real. The expected quantities of the ps3 are lower than the 360 at release. It should sell out, and if it doesn't then there is a problem. Don't make the same mistake twice. Preorder the console and forget about the games. You will be able to find plenty in the stores.

$60.. Yeah... Cause next time it will be $70, then $80. Nintendo games were that price, and now they are picking up scraps in the US Market. Maybe media had something to do with it, but I know more than a couple ppl must have balked at paying $10 more for the N64 version of a game they could also get on the PSX.

How many non-hardcore gamers are going to buy games for that?

How many moms and dads are going to be cool with that?

If you go to EBgames it has their dates listed as May 1st of 06. I wonder which one is the true? Oh, and the $60 thing isn't that big of a deal because yeah, they were $50 before and on inferior systems. I have the 360 now (which I love, I hope the PS3 is good too though so the games keep getting better and better) and throwing down an extra $10 for games that look a million times better and I think play a million times better is not a big deal. At EB just type in PS3 in the search and it takes you to the page. Then you can look at the games they have listed.

Responded B, #22: It's like pre-ordering Halo 3. If you wanna f*ck yourself go ahead.

That's a dumb statement. How many people here f*ck themselves? Don't be shy. Be a man and admit you like mother thumb and her four daughters! If its as high as I think so, Halo 3 will have lots of pre-orders by your analogy.

As for the supposed October release- we shall see.

I think it's dumb to pre-order games. However, the PS3 games may be a different story. Assuming that ALL games will be on Blu-ray, it "may" be difficult and expensive for companies to dish out millions of copy in the Blu-ray disks since it's a premature format. They may limit the copies so we might see a "PS3 software" shortages if it's a hot title. It's dumb to pre-order CDs and DVDs because they are so readily available, but Blu-ray disks? I don't know.

Also, i'm no smartass, but don't you guys think that Vision Gran Tourismo and MGS4 won't be seeing 2006? The launch lineup will mainly include EA sport titles, Activision's ports, 2k Games, and King Kong of course. I'm guessing Armor Core 4, Warhawk also with a 1st party "tetris" like game.

And to put things into perspective...PSP preorders listed 45 games. Only around 9 actually launched months later.

GameStop is having a lot of financial trouble. By getting people to preorder vaporware, they can show the accountants that the future of the company is bright.

If you think about how difficult the PS3 and Cell processor to develop for, you can see that the PS3 will have a drought of games just like the PSP.

In other news, Gamestop is now taking preorders for the following Revolution titles:

Super Mario Revolution
Metroid Prime III: Revolution
F-Zero Revolution
Super Smash Bros Revolution
Legend Of Zelda Revolution
1080 Revolution
Custom Robo Revolution
Pikmin Revolution
Wave Race Revolution
Mario Kary Revolution
Fire Emblem Revolution
Paper Mario Revolution
Star Fox Revolution
Mario Party Revolution
Kid Icarus Revolution

This goes out as a big 'duh!' to all those people who actually believe that the PS3 games listed will launch with the PS3. Most won't even show up in the first year.

The only thing I can deduce from this move by Sony is that they are hurting financially and they need all the Sony fanboys to preorder so Sony can get some more money to help cover all the cost the ps3 is giving Sony.

so if you dont mind being a sucker, go ahead and preorder.

Tony(#26): wtf? god, i knew gamestop was filled with fucking dumbasses.. but DAMN. don't you just love how they can get away with pulling random bullshit out of their asses and feeding it to consumers who are willing to buy it? because i think it sucks.

i could go in and preorder a PS4 right now and i almost guarantee they'd be more than happy to take it.

i still remember almost preordering The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess back in the fall, being assured that it was hitting shelves in November 13th. and just recently, when i went in there looking for NCAA 06 (which they were sold out of) the guy tries to push an NCAA 07 preorder on me. his exact words were,

"if you don't preorder, we can't guarantee that you'll be able to get it when it comes out"

i wanted to tell him that even if i DID preorder, there was no guarantee that i'd get it when it came out.

but then i probably would have gone off into a long and rambling rant about how much their corporate policies and procedures suck, and about how they gave my friend his NEW copy of mercenaries in a generic black case labeled with "MERCENARIES" written on a piece of tape in permanent marker.

i didn't though.. instead i just played a couple of demos and browsed a little while i evesdropped on their conversation about starting a J-Pop band and meeting girls on Guild Wars.

i really don't know why i still go there..
