One thing I dislike about modern games is the death (near death) or the high score tables! All games should use them in some way.

The leaderboards on Xbox Live can also be a little depressing. There's nothing worse than running through a board of Marble Blast Ultra and thinking you totally owned that level with a perfect run just to find out that you still rank #5642 with a time of 12.3 seconds and the top 10 is filled with 3.7 second runs.

But I still love having the leaderboards and being able to check out everyones gamercards right on your console

All right, you can have that if I can have "Revolution Controller: More Control Than Your Average Dildo"

#2 hit the nail on the head as to why ungrouped online leaderboards are (for most people) a waste of time. The scores are just way too good for the average gamer to even come close to.

Now if you could make a leaderboard and add people to it so that only you and a few friends were ranked, that would be a much better system. That may already be in place, I have no idea. I'm in Australia, the plate for gaming's sloppy seconds, so no Xbox 360 yet.

cyberfelon, the 360 has a feature like that. The Leaderboards are grouped so it shows you in comparison to your friends. Its really fun, then you can switch it over and look at yourself compared to the rest of the world for that depressing reality.

To #6, I agree. As long as I can kick my friends asses that's all that matters to me. I cannot and will not spend the time to get over 5 million points in Geometry Wars, nor, will I ever care to, as long as I'm the tops on my freinds lists. It still shows me I'm capable of a decent game. I do agree about the low scores though; some people either have way too much time on their hands or are severly lucky.

Single-player games have never lost being competitive. As long as they give out a score of any kind - fastest time, highest score, whatever - you don't need a combined leaderboard.

Back in the day me and my buddies used to waste away our weekends trying to beat each others' high score from last weekend then bringing in the crumbled note, a fuzzy printout or just your word to school on Monday about your latest and greatest score on the game of the day. We used to compete in all sports games, especially racing games and a lot of the shoot'em ups, although some of them were just ridiculous.

I remember a particular game of Commando on C64 where I was able to rack up so many extra lives during the day that I could leave the game running overnight while I slept and still come back to it in the morning. Autofire helped :)

Another game I have fond memories about was Revs, again on the C64. It measured lap times in thousandths of a second. There were a few times one of us was able to improve the fastest lap by just that, one thousandth of a second.

Good times...

I wouldn't say single player high score competition has died a death - I've been running a website tracking high scores for over 200 games for nearly 4 years now. Couple of thousand people have signed up and we're doing quite nicely. :)
