Forget about market share leader, which current-gen console manufacturer had the best logo? If you would, leave your
biases at the door and pick the one that is most visually appealing.

I think the Gamecube's logo is the most creative. You can see the "G" in there, the "C", and obviously the cube. And I love the animation that goes with it.
The Xbox is the next up. I like the way it looks, though green was never really my thing...
50. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think "PS2 is the only system to not display their logo once you boot up the system. The gamecube has the logo rolling around to form the G, the Xbox thing is there. But for the PS2, its just plain white "Playstation"...is it not? someone please clarify for me.
As a "brand design" geek, I love threads like this.
My pick would be the Gamecube's logo. It's genius. Everybody has already said that it's a cube and a G with a "C" in the negative space, but it also nicely continued the "isometric" logo style from the N64.
I'm very curious as to what the Revolution's final name and logo will be. I'm a geek like that, but if it's anything like Nintendo's prior efforts, it should be well worth seeing.
The other two consoles both have significant problems - I'm not sure which I'd say was 2nd and which I'd say was 3rd, but they're both far behind.
The Xbox logo looks okay, but the problem lies in that it isn't an "object" symbol. Nearly every good logo is a "form" - that is, it should be like a floating object, with a front, a back, and sides. (Even two-dimensional logos like the PS2 logo can have depth added.) The Gamecube logo is a great form logo - it can be rotated, as it is in the boot-up sequence. You can even get the "G logo" as an item to put in your house in Animal Crossing. But the Xbox logo isn't a "form." It's basically like the entire logo was formed from the negative space - the black background is the "form," in this case. You can't rotate it, you can't play with it - there's less of an impact. Plus, the resulting gradients limit the placement of the logo - it can only effectively be placed on black or white. It's not a very good logo. If you don't think it's "form" is important, look at the Xbox 360 logo. Noticed that Microsoft chose one a form for the logo, and they have it rotate in the Xbox 360 commercials. Form matters.
As for the PS2 logo, it does look dated and a bit uncreative (here's hoping the PS3 gets a real logo). It's also too "long" of a shape - since the PS1/N64 era, at least, each console has had a "symbol" logo. Websites, publications, and the like have relied on these symbols to denote the platform. These symbols are almost always "square" - they could fill up a square or a circle nicely - but the PS2 logo is much longer. The PS family logo is the PS2's true symbol, sure, but the PS2 logo is what's come to symbolize the PS2 - it's what is front and center on the packaging, after all.
"The PS2 logo is simply unimaginative. There is something to be said for simplicity, but it just seems like they didn't put much effort into it."
Well, just using the first letter of the console name isn't exactly imaginative neither. At least those PS2-letters have a modern style to them.
The GC-logo's appeal is clearly the semi-3D effect and the fact that it shows "the cube" which is running in circles as extension of itself (Freud would love it).
The Xbox logo looks pretty bland in comparison (even though it's meant to be a rising star, the first moving game-console logo which doesn't move because it seems to be driven by it's own green-slime propulsion, right in itself!) and I get quite the impression that it tries to be more than it is.(oversimplified and at the same time vacantly complex in a pseudo-profound way. -Which reminds me of Madonna. But that's another story).
As with most other readers(as far as i can tell), I defeinitely like the Gamecube logo best. In all honesty, i would like the Xbox logo better, but Microsoft just has to choose that nasty green for the their Xbox(360) logo. PS2 logo is just plain unappealing.

You think the original Xbox logo would look better in blue?
I think the logo itself and the use of grey is their main problem. Grey and green seem to cancel each other out (actually, that kind of grey kills any color (vibrance),-). And we definitely had enough grey on computer parts in the last 20 years or so...
I guess it's meant to be inconspicuous and it effectively distracts from the fact that its an apple-design-ripoff.
The philosophy of it's moderate overall design (obviously, thanks J. Alert) must be that it centers around the consumer, not around itself (like GC).
Whatever, I just wonder what went wrong with the football-stadium power-brick and the Boing 747 noises caused by that cheap 12x DVD-Drive...
I own a xbox & a PS2. The PS2 logo isn't very inspirational but does the job. The xboxlogo looks rather stupid with the split up X. It's better then the PS2's however but the Gamecube has the smartest logo out there. Nicely designed and indeed timeless as someone mentioned before. I like it a lot. But honestly ... a logo doesn't matter when I buy a console. Because if it did I would have 2 gamecubes now.
The Gamecube logo is certainly the most cleverly designed, but I must say I prefer the Xbox logo when it's doing that fancy animation. Just based on the images above, Gamecube wins, though.
I'm a sucker for the blue gradient and that slick font, so I'm going to say PS2. I really wish they had kept the same font for the PS3, maybe with the red color from those "WELCOME CHANG3" ads.
Second, I'd say the Xbox logo has a lot of visual impact without being too elaborate. The Gamecube G has a little too much going on, although I like how it gets rolled out when you power up the system.
I would say that the Xbox logo is much more effective than the other two but I personally like the GameCube logo design much better. I mean, you can look at it a few ways and see how well it is designed. You can see a G wrapped around a cube and also just a cube overall that has been warped somewhat.
The PlayStation 2 logo just seems a bit too bland.
I would definitely say that the GameCube logo is the best in terms of originality and composition. The PS2 logo is rather simple in design though not hideous or jarring. By far the Xbox logo is my least favorite. I can't say I ever liked the green cases it had either. It's bold yet pretty jarring to the eye, perhaps due to the bright green, unlike the other two which are at least easy on the eye. This is just my opinion on the provided pictures. Had the original PS (rainbow-colored) logo been available then I'd say it would be a close second (or even a tie) with the GameCube logo.
My vote goes to Gamecube. I just love the animations they did in the console start-up, the commercials and the kiosk preview discs(blue lasers cutting a shape of the Gamecube logo) Works really well in endless possibilities.
To be honest, I think they're all pretty good logos. In fact, when you think about it, each logo fits the console's personality perfectly. The PS2's logo is sleek and modern, just like how many consumers view the console (well, at least when it was first released). The XBox logo is cool looking, which definately appeals to the older aged market. And the GameCube logo is more creative of all of them and Nintendo's obviously linked with innovation and creativity (maybe to an unhealthy extent).
But if I were to choose between all of them, I'd say it's the GameCube's. I like it's creative design and it ALMOST (note the emphasis) looks sleek when you don't notice the G and C in the logo. The XBox logo was never appealing to me and the PS2 logo kinda looks bland nowadays.
The logos are all somewhat representative of the systems that use them:
1. The gamecube logo is small and simple, but clever as hell.
2. The xbox logo looks like a rupture in the earth, appropriate given how groundbreaking the systems capabilities were at launch. (Ugly console housing aside)
3. the PS2 logo has a neat color fade that darkens from bottom to top, which is interesting because the sytem took a while to fill in and realize its potential.
The PS logo is simple, but next to the other two becomes rather bland. I like the Xbox logo - the glowing slit and the bump that fades away into the dark; I also love the GCN logo - the cubism and the way it forms a "G". So to choose, I ask myself, "For which logo would I like to be credited as the designer?" The GCN logo.
Gamecube logo is the best, it's the most asthetically pleasing. Xbox is good too, but a little too garish. PS2's is in last, it's just not appealing to the eye.
Nintendo. They always keep their logos simple and sweet. PS2 logo is ugly. Microsoft feels the need to TRADEMARK their logo, which is just plain stupid. It would be extremely obvious to the world if say, X-play, started using it and calling it their own.
I was trying hard to be unbiased (xbox is by far my favorite of the three consoles) so I was going to say gamecube. Peer pressure pushed me back over to the xbox side, though. I've always liked the texture of the xbox logo. The GC roll in is pretty nice but the xbox logo looks better standing still.
I have to go with gamecube because it looks so original. The xbox logo does look good but a little out of date (x360 logo is better sure but it isn't listed hehe).
Ps2 logo is nice but not really thought-out like the cube one..
