Oh, Mr. Jack Thompson (ID 231665 - Phone 305.666.4366) before you say anything - I just want you to know that I play violent games (Katamari) and that I Love You.

I don't agree with a word you have to say, I only wish I had enough money to fly down there only to give you a big hug!

Shhh... Don't speak.

Sincerely,
Kris Aubuchon

In all seriousness, I want proof that Jack Thompson himself actually is making those comments...

...notice the name below? See, that's not my name, but it's REALLY easy for me to spoof it...

...so Joystiq? Are you just playing sarcasm, or is it really JT posting 'round these comments?

I am pretty sure they have have cross checked his IP against other IP entries on other sites. Thats the big thing, the technical logs behind what you see. It should be pretty easy to figure that out, so I assume, considering Joystiq's zelous reaffirmation that he is indeed Jack Thompson. Well most of those posts anyway.

i thought that i would post a letter that i wrote to my cousin in texas because that seems to be a new trend here on the joystiq posts.

Hey Bill,
How've you been. I'm doing good. So whats new in texas. Nothing new here except for some loser named Jack Thompson posting letters on a videogame blog. I know, stupid isn't it. But I guess losers will do anything to get attention. I really hope he stops posting his letters because they are really boring. And they're so damn long that it takes half an hour to scroll past them. I do feel bad though...it's just that seeing losers depresses me. thats all. anyway, just want to let you that i'm still getting straight A's at my university. i have to go volunteer at the hospital in a few hours, but i think i'll play some grand theft auto before i go. take care.

How's this for moronic then...

Jack Thompson's outburst are certainly very insidious, which is kind of ironic, no? The only public figure I can attest to displaying aggressive, verbally violent outbursts stemmed from video games is one Jack Thompson. I wonder if he's privy to that notion?

#7, I agree. The thing that worries me is, Joystiq has a LOT to gain by having a lunatic like JT posting on this forum. It's trolling at its finest, and it generates a LOT of traffic. Seeing as how Joystiq makes money off traffic, and they are the only ones who can say whether this is JT or not, I have to take this whole thing with a grain of salt.

I'm not making any accusations, but I think a healthy dose of skepticism is proscribed here.

Chris K (and others): in order for a comment to appear on Joystiq, one must use a valid email address and click a link inside an email that is sent to the comment author.

JT has been a longtime reader and commenter on Joystiq. We know this because the email address he uses to verify his comments is the same that he uses for official purposes: domain name registrations, media interviews, threats to sue, and so on. This is our surest verification. In order for this verification to be wrong, someone other than JT would need to have physical access to Jack Thompson's email address.

PS: Skepticism is important, but suggesting that we'd fabricate the whole thing is frigging ridiculous. I'm disappointed. Your comments are usually quite sane. Do you have any idea of the libel liability we'd be exposing ourselves to if all of this were fabricated? That's just crazy talk.

Whoa, whoa VC, I think your bein' a bit harsh on Chris K there. He did say: "I'm not making any accusations..." And I know I (being poster #7) didn't mean to accuse either. I was seriously just curious how that was done. Of course, now I'm smacking myself in the head for not realizing the email thing.

I don't think Chris, me, or anyone else was going so far as to say that Joystiq fabricated all that, I think we all agree that would be a bit ridiculous. We just made some inquisitive observations, and we thank you for clearing that up.

We love ya VC (and the rest of Joystiq), sorry for any misunderstanding.

Just leave the guy alone, yes i don't agree with the way he is going about his business, but there are some games that he does have a point on. GTA did diserve a "M" rateing but it still comes down to parents showing a interest in what there kids are playing and doing.

The fact that we all play games angers us when we hear people pointing the blame on a easy scapgoat rather then takeing responsibility for there actual actions.

My question to Jack is when he finaly completes his crusade and all the games he wants off the store shelfs are gone, and still there are others getting killed by young people. What are you going to blame it on then?

Really he frequents this site?
I'd like to let him know that what makes kids violent is the fact that they feel like they're coming into their own (which they are biologically) but they're allowed the same rights as 4 year olds in this country. And you want them to have even less outlets for their natural anger (which by the way would be there without the videogames movies and rap joints too)? Nothing is more enraging than being patronized by some religious nut who wouldn't know a good time if it raptured him. They also resent being made to do busy work in a failing school system built at the dawn of the industrial era to prepare teens for work in factories. You want to fix something Jack? Make yourself useful and fix that.
Kids were performing much worse atrocities long before video games TV movies or even the radio. There's nothing you can do to change the fact that some people (young and old) are chemically and/or emotionally imbalance and will want to hurt other people because of it. I wish they were, but games aren't realistic enough to really train someone to be a killing machine.
Most of the kids (and adults) that do go psycho suffer from some kind of abuse. Make yourself useful and fix that. We all agree that child abuse needs to stop. And your doing an even greater disservice to the parents who don't abuse but neglect their children by making it easier to do so.
Can't you see your self righteous fundamentalist way of life only make the kids more violent when it's pressed on them like it is now. But hey... it may not be bad for someone who's mother slowly neutered him his whole life.
Your as bad as the terrorists Jack and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Dear Guy (#25),

I understand how you feel about videogames but seriously do some research rather than spouting off hearsay. You are making broad statements with no examples to back up your claims. Plus you speak for many, when it is clear that you are speaking for yourself. I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just suggesting you do more research. Making statements such as children being naturally angry because of puberty sound far fetched to say the least, I think misguided angst would be a more appropriate term. The whole bashing of the education system is also pretty juvenile and not well thought out. Yes, the school system is flawed, but that doesn't mean that it is completely useless. I know I went through public schools up to the University level and I got a pretty decent job.I also disagree with you attacking JT to fix everything that you have a problem with. Although I don't agree with his views, 1) stooping to his level and using the same tactics he uses does not help and 2) I respect a man that is passionate about what he believes in. At least he is doing something, however misguided, to try and make a difference. If anything you should follow his example and do something to make a change rather than attacking someone through words, words that will undoubtly fall on deaf ears.

My biggest problem with Mr. Jack Thompson is that he claims to be on this crusade against video games due to his religious beliefs, which happen to be Christian. This just incites further flaming as now not only do video gamers disagree with him and his antics, but now anti-relgious zealots can have a field day stereotyping Christians. This is all very immature and uneducated nonsense, from any point of view.

As a life-long Christian and student of the Bible, I agree with Mr. Thompson on a few issues, namely that many forms of media are not wholesome in content. Movies, music and video games are just a few examples. How do I as a Christian take action? By simply not buying them. There will always be something that people do not agree with and the best way to communicate that is to not support the product/issue financially. This is America, the land of capitalism after all. But to attack a specific form of media, such as video games, in the manner that he has is just absurd. Are there bad video games out there? Sure. I personally would never play GTA titles. Are there bad CD's out there? Absolutely, I can't stand a lot of the lyrics these days. How about movies? Hollywood dishes out trash like "Original Sin", "Showgirls", "Unfaithful" and the like time and time again. The question is, ARE CHRISTIANS RESPONSIBLE FOR REGULATING THE WORLD'S MORAL DIRECTION? The answer would be a resounding NO. Scripturally there is no precedent for this type of behavior, yet modern Christians are notorious for it. Jesus didn't come and riot against the Roman government telling them that they needed to change their tune or they were going to hell. And the Roman government and people were just as, or possibly MORE violent and bloodthirsty than present day Americans (The Roman Colosseum anyone?). The fact is the Christ had absolutely NO interest in political matters, He cared for the people. He did not go around preching of the evils of Rome or the downfalls of the society, he simply communicated love and acceptance to those who would listen. He didn't try to get gladiator events banned, He didn't attempt to shoehorn pagan rituals and festivals, He simply spoke to those who were in need and were open to His message. He was very passive in nature, but somehow some Christians have turned it all around and taken it upon themselves to get involved with current world affairs as activists, and those that do tend to be very outspoken and zealous and give Christianity a bad reputation. It is a sad testament and poor reflection of the Christ's life and ministry. On behalf of these judgemental people who claim Christianity, I apologize to everyone. For the rest of us Christians who enjoy a good game of Halo 2 or Gran Tourismo as much as the next guy (or girl), GAME ON.

Wow, Spartacus, will you please run for Pope? Or at least retake the conservative movement from the bible thumpers so I can vote my politics again, instead of my conscience?

As for accusing Joystiq of fabrication, I didn't say that, and that was not my intent. But I will say that none of us (not even Joystiq) have any proof that the people posting here under JT's name are actually him. I know all about the email verification Joystiq does, as I do it for every post (GRRRR). But it's naive to think that this system is infalliable, especially considering the overlap of people who hate JT and the people who have the ability to spoof him are quite large. Hell, the overlap of people who hate JT and people who are even slightly intelligent is pretty large!

If someone were to pretend to be jack to make him look stupid, don't you think theyd say completely ridiculous things (sorry, i mean even more completely ridiculous, but you get the point.)? If They wanted to get his points accross theyd do it under a different name, because anything JT says isnt exactly considered intelligent philosophical discourse by most gamers (myself among them).

More to the point i think Occam's Razor can be applied here; Sure someone COULD spoof jacks IP and E-mail address, and make comments that he would make under his name. Although it would take some technical skill its not above the realm of possibility. However, A much simpler and more logical explanation is that Jacko is posting using his ip and email address.

So can we end the discussion about whether or not he's posting here? as has been pointed out numerous times, the more us murder simulation obsessed fat friendless losers talk about him the happier he is.

Spoofing an IP is one thing, that's really easy, but spoofing email is a bit harder. I've been thinking about it, and I really can't think of a way that would work. Yes, I can send out emails from any email address. But this is a bit different. Whatever email you give you actually have to login and confirm. So even if I had Jack's email and put it in, I have no way of confirming it, unless he's nice enough to hit the button for me...

Honestly, it seems pretty sound to me. It's possible some extremely elite hacker could pull something, but I honestly don't think anyone of that caliber cares quite that much just to post a stupid message in his name. After all, Jack does that without any help...

Hi
Moon (#28)

I don't know where you got the idea that I think all of teens problems come from hormones and puberty. I thought I was making the opposite point that even without hormones teens have plenty of reasons to be pissed off. Just they way they're treated in this country lacks any respect or recognition of their abilities or beliefs. Teens in this country are second class citizens. I can understand if some people say that it's the way it should be but they don't. They only try and bs the kids, patronize them, and make them think that this is as seriously they're going to be taken.

If you really think the education system in this country adequately prepares kids for careers in the information age, you must be on crack. I'm sorry (I seemed to have forgotten that we weren't attacking each other) but it's incredibly juvenile to think that you made a good argument there. You don't seem too bright. What makes you think they did a good job on you? Are you especially rich by any chance? The reason that the students in this country are falling behind the other students around the world is because they are not being taught in a way that befits someone growing up in a capitalistic society during the information age. Our schools are mini-factories originally made to make little factory workers for the industrial age; look in a history book, that's when it started. While this was (at the time) better than the feudal age where nobody but the very rich were educated at all, now we are sending away the last of the factory work but still churning out factory workers. Kids today are taught only how to just scrape by, and not how to actually make a decent living or how to be evolutionary in their chosen field. They tell you crap like work hard and be loyal to your company, not to be wary and invest wisely, which is the only way to make a better than decent living here. Too many people blame the teachers when they do a great job considering that they're told what to teach and how to teach it like the science teachers in Kansas or folks trying to study advance medicine despite the fact that they have huge restrictions when working with stem cells.

From computers to science, religious fundamentalists like Jack Thompson here would like nothing better than to have kids taught only those things that would make them as close-minded as himself and as poor as a government employee. And how are we supposed to surpass other countries in biology and genetics when evangelical d-bags like this want kids to learn only enough so they wont have more money than him.
Trust me, I've actually done allot of "research" on this.
