LEGO Star Wars II: Return of the Original Trilogy
IGN has netted an interview with David
Perkinson of LucasArts to discuss--brace yourself--LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. If you loved the
first game, you may be equally enthralled by the sequel. Key highlights from the interview include:
- The game is set in the world of the Original Trilogy (Episodes IV-VI). For those of you who don't know about the first 3 Star Wars films, shame on you.
- Over 50 new characters, plus the ability to import characters from the original LEGO Star Wars, bringing the total to just over 100 choices.
- Character creation: mix-and-match LEGO body parts from all of your unlocked characters.
- 2-player Co-Op mode, no online multiplayer, and DS players can enjoy 4-player Co-Op as well as a single-cart versus mode.
- Completely reworked vehicle system; non-droids can now enter and exit any vehicle they see at any time, and are free to roam about: "If you want to do the trench run in the Millennium Falcon, or even on a landspeeder, you now can." Sweet.
- Chewbacca can now rip off LEGO arms as a melee attack. Super Sweet.
[Thanks, Princess Zelda]

OK, this one sounds like a must have! :D
Dan Choi @ Feb 10th 2006 2:25PM
I know I've been waiting for this sequel. The first title was a short, but amusing co-op delight, and the second may prove to be one of the best original-trilogy adaptations we've seen for quite some time.
Phillip @ Feb 10th 2006 3:09PM
I just wish they had online/LAN multiplayer. Oh well... *sigh*
Jago @ Feb 10th 2006 3:12PM
SUH-WEET!!! The first one was awesome!!!
I hope there is something playable at E3 06...I'm gonna be all over it. lol
Deezul @ Feb 10th 2006 3:14PM
What, no 360 version?
jc @ Feb 10th 2006 3:35PM
I'm a huge starwars fan. This sounds very interesting... honestly, is the first one worth picking up?
Terry @ Feb 10th 2006 3:53PM
That's great! The first one really was more fun then it should've been, let's hope LucasArts doesn't micromanage it to death now that they realize it has big-money potential.
Also, no 4 player for 'Cube and Xbox? Boo!
And of course there's no 360 version. Why would there be? Lego are simple geometic solids, you don't need fancy renderers to push such easy geometry!
Myles @ Feb 10th 2006 3:58PM
w00t! Haha, I've rented the original for both Xbox and Gamecube a couple times. My younger brothers just got it for their birthday. Since it's MY Gamecube, I'll get to play it whenever I want. :D
Now, to get number two for XBox or Gamecube? :P I'm guessing I'll have a LONG time to decide.
Deezul @ Feb 10th 2006 4:04PM
360 version, as the original isn't backward compatible. Yes, I can use my original Xbox, but it's on the smaller TV, without surround sound.
White Rose Duelist @ Feb 10th 2006 4:11PM
I'm all about this, although I hope they change their mind at least for the DS and allow Wi-Fi multiplayer.
Princess Zelda @ Feb 10th 2006 4:18PM
jc, "Is the first one worth picking up?"
Buy it!
My first though while playing this game was "This is way too much fun!" There's too many things I love about this game to list them for you. The game is different from anything I've played before. The first game is $30 in most stores. I'm really looking forward to playing Lego Star Wars II.
jc @ Feb 10th 2006 4:38PM
Thanks Princess, I will check it out.
mike @ Feb 10th 2006 5:46PM
I also need a 360 version. I could buy it for my gamecube, but I like stuff on my xbox more. They should at least make a patch for 360 which allows backwards compatible the day the game comes out. of course they wont do that, but I think the devlopers of new games should.
I find it odd that new games are being announced today and they are being announced for xbox only. What the hell was the point of me buying my 360 if your gonna make the games for the old system.
Jago @ Feb 10th 2006 6:38PM
Wow...I swear some of you 360 fanboys don't know how the industry works do you?
Just b/c a new console has been released doesn't mean games are not produced anymore for the previous model (in this case the Xbox.) When a new system is released, games are still made for the current systems until the next-gen machines are profitable for 3rd party companies. Sony has done this, Sega has done this, Nintendo has done this...hell Atari even did it.
Plus I don't that you guys actually realize how EXPENSIVE it is to develop Xbox 360 (and soon to be released PS3 games.)
Princess Zelda @ Feb 10th 2006 10:02PM
mike,
I'll try to answer some of your questions.
Why isn't there a 360 version? The answer is in the article from IGN link above, read the article.
As to a patch for the 360, It's a lot more complicated then a simple patch. Major Nelson (Xbox Live's Larry Hryb) did an interview on his blogcast/podcast with Backwards Compatability Marketing Manager at Microsoft he explains how backwards compatabilty works and gives an email address for requests. It's show number #154, a very interesting interview.
Now your last question about new games coming out of original Xbox. There's more people in the world who have the original xbox then the 360, right now. It makes since to release the game to a widest audience as possible. I think I remember hearing from Major Nelson that the original xbox will have more games coming out for it this year then any other year previous.
Conn @ Feb 11th 2006 12:47AM
Holy crap, THIS is what a sequel should be. I never expected a huge overhaul like this!
Sentynel @ Feb 11th 2006 5:09PM
Yes yes yes!
Making me want to play the original again, too.
Rob @ Feb 13th 2006 9:20AM
I loved the first game, unlocking everything was a blast (as were the battles my brother and I had against eachother as Darth Sidious and Yoda ^_^), but I think they may be changing mechanics that made the first game fun, and not exactly for the better.
It's isn't on this news update, but they also said that all characters will be able to manipulate LEGO blocks to form handy objects, which is a curse and a blessing, because it neutralizes some of the multi-character puzzles hat made the first game's story mode fun.
Still, I'm psyched for the game, can't wait to get my hands on more LEGO Star Wars goodness >_> ...
R.O.B. @ Feb 14th 2006 4:58PM
Game developers take note: THIS is how sequels work. Understand what the consumer wants, modify the original around that while adding on to the features that got the best publicity, smothen things up around the edges and *BAM* hit sequel made.
Agent Oracle @ Feb 24th 2006 6:56PM
Meh, the 360 will be backwards compatable for Lego Star Wars 2 by the time it's released, so it won't have to cost $10.00 more.
copz @ Feb 27th 2006 6:18PM
yahooo but i wonder which platforms you can transfer characters from the first one to the second
sonny @ Mar 25th 2006 9:17AM
I,M A VERY VERY BIG FAN AND I THIK THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE THE BEST
