The 22 year head start doesn't hurt either. Also it's pretty hard to outsell a product by copying it. The 90's saw a endless stream of games that basically copied the sidescroll and power-up platforming found in the original SMB. When SM64 came out, we saw an endless stream of "me toos" show up. Pac-Man was a great game though. I sucked at it, but that didn't stop me from wasting so many quarters.

I'm surprised that Ms Pacman didn't pass Pacman. It seems like I rarely see the original game anywhere, while Ms Pacman can be found at almost any arcade or pizza parlor.

Wow, with such a smaller market back then I am amazed that Super Mario Bros. is the top selling game. I mean I know they had almost the entire market share, but I had no idea the installed base was so large!

Don't see much of Pac-Man??? Are you insane, or just oblivious? I would say there is almost as much Pac Man going around these days as Mario, and THAT takes alot of effort!

Pac-Man World 3
Pac-Man World 2
Pac 'N Roll
Pac-Man Fever
Pac-Man Collection
Pac-Pix
Ms. Pac-Man: Maze Madness

To name a few from this gen hardware . . .

I wonder if Combat, which was bundled with the Atari 2600, is on the top ten list of best selling video games.

Really, the titles that were bundled with a console probably should not be counted.

There were four Pac-Man related games released in 2005. It seems a bit odd to say that we don't see much of him.

I still remember playing Super Mario "back in the day." It was amazing! I was 5 years old and I was on crack. There's something magical about Mario. Even after all these years, people are still anticipating the next Mario game. I don't care what people say. You know, even the ones that say Mario is being milked to death these days, there's no denying it, you know you want the next Mario game for Revolution. I also remember playing Super Mario 64 for the first time. I truly experienced the real definition of "mind-blowing." This damn game was so incredible. I couldn't give a rat's ass about 3D gaming until this baby arrived. It was magical, it was exciting, it was just damn fun. I'm feeling nostalgic just writing about it. Same thing goes for Zelda. Anyway, whatever Nintendo does, I sincerely hope they keep on doing it. There will obviously come a time where game genius, Shigeru Miyamoto will eventually have to retire. But I hope that that's in a very, very long time. Peace out!

Hey, don't forget that Pac-man is a playable character in the arcade Mario Kart GP, since Namco made it (in Japan, of course.)

"SMB is only the best selling since it was bundled with NESes.."

It would be more apt to say that SMB was bundles with NES. People weren't buying NES for the hardware. It had a killer app that moved units, and that killer app was Super Mario Bros.

MYST...*YAWN*

"Pac-Man World 3
Pac-Man World 2
Pac 'N Roll
Pac-Man Fever
Pac-Man Collection
Pac-Pix
Ms. Pac-Man: Maze Madness"

The difference between the Pac Man games and the Mario games is that most of the Mario games are good.

Pac Pix? It was a neat E3 tech demo.

Pac N' Roll? Neat concept...not much of a game.

Pac Man Fever? That POS "game" is not even worth the discs it is printed on.

The problem with the Pac Man games that have tried to go beyond the original style is that they aren't very memorable.

The only recent Pac Man game that was fun was the Gamecube's Pac Man vs b/c it was good'ole Pac Man with a modern multiplayer twist.

Information may be outdated. Mario games sold already over 180m copies. Pokemon games already passed the 143m mark.

And
remember that SMB3 is the best selling videogame not bundled with a console, so Mario holds both records effectively.

Not to mention all the illegal sales of the SMB through plug n play TV games and rom downloads.

I'd be willing to bet that SMB is the most downloaded rom too, but there's no way to find out.

I wonder what game sold the most for PSX. I would imagine Final Fantasy or Gran Turismo, most likely. Considering that people are still buying new copies of FFVII (I saw a new shrink-wrapped copy at Christmastime), that should definitely be up towards the top.

My boyfriend has been working on this page for a few months now... and with all the rest of the wiki community involved, I think it is working up to be a great reference.

I'm just reeling with shock that Gaming Steve posted a NON World of Warcraft post.

Hopefully it was just a fluke.

The PS1 was the best selling system? I would have thought that the NES was. Did they perhaps not count the Famicom, because I've heard statistics that at the height of its popularity, there was a Famicom in one in every three houses in Japan.

Although I guess I didn't take into account that if people went through PS1s like they did PS2s, it'd sell a lot.

Anyhow, I'm not complaining or anything, it was just a surprise to see that the PSX beat the NES/Famicom.

Thanks your boyfriend for me for that list on Wikipedia.

And yeah, while the NES sold 10 million less then the PSX, the game drop is noticable:

Gran Turismo (10.84 million)
Final Fantasy VII (9.8 million)
Gran Turismo 2 (9.34 million)
Final Fantasy VIII (8.05 million)

It took 4 games to even match SMB total sold, which means that SMB sold 40 million NES, where as FF VII might have sold maybe 5 million.
