Yes, I have a question. A dumb one. If we get enough stars, do we get on the payroll? Because, you know, adding content to the site improves the numbers and raises your advertising monies.

Obviously, I mean to phrase it like this; is there the threat that contributors become part of the joystiq family?

Apart from that, I'd like to add that looking at the Joystiq corporate strata led me to search Sara Gilbert from Roseanne on IMDB - and she is now a mother! Congrats to Sara on the baby and SaraH for being a good blogger on Blogger-Baby. Coincidence?

...I don't get a star, do I?

#7, other good comment systems that are in use elsewhere are linked to the email address rather than the name in order to cut down posting fraud. I can only assume that Joystiq's, star system works in almost exactly the same way.

Fan: the tips form isn't tied to stars. Stars are purely about comments. You probably haven't gotten a star yet because we just missed some of your better comments or because we're still getting used to the system ourselves.

Christian: when we look to hire another writer on Joystiq, we may invite star commenters to apply.

GlitchCog: Our good old friend JT does post some long, intricate, and sometimes thoughtful posts right here at Joystiq. For that he should get a star, even though we disagree with him.

But then he would get a negative star for posting flamebait like telling us to "go to hell more quietly." Oh Jack, when will you learn?!

Well, since it isn't a matter of being right or wrong but rather providing input to drive site interest, it might be suggested that Thompson has earned himself a dubious honor that cannot be measured by mere stars. Thompson is busy trying to become the Sen. Joe McCarthy of video game content issues by clouding an important subject with his sheer insanity and need for attention. The worst thing you can do to him is just ignore him. Even if he begins to screech, "Melting! I'm melting..." just look the other way until the noise stops.

On a more serious note, I hope you guys start handing out stars more freely. I know they've been up for a week or so, and until today only about 10 had been handed out.

It's good for everyone to see people with 2 and 3 figure stars. It's also great motivation to comment!

Despite not being on the sidebar, I apparently have a star, too. I don't know how I earned it; maybe past memorable comments. But since I don't know how I got it, and it's not immediately obvious that I have it, it must be a ninja star.

In all seriousness, I think the Joystiq team should alert people, through email, when they give out a star. A pat on the back feels better when you know you're getting one.

Rest easy Joystiq readers, you each have a star reserved deep within the cockles of my heart, even if you're still stuck at zero, as I am.

Let's keep a count in this thread of how many readers make blatant trying-to-be-funny attempts at getting a star while trying to make it look like they are not. Chalk my post up as the first.

Why not give negative stars or a seperate thumbs down. for jerk posts? Thus thompson could be hailed properly. (it might make for less flaming too... unless jerks take pride in their jerkiness.) ie. don't put a jerk leaderboard up.

Is there currently any way to tell what you recieved your star for? It would be good to know what types of posting/debating that is worthy of recieving one, especially if the intent is to show others the type of content that you are looking for.

A good example; Jack Thompson has a star, yet like a child he harkens, "Where are the flowers," fifty-five-milliion times in a row. If another user see's his star, and then in turn immitates his spamming, wouldn't that mean the star system has reinforced a negative habbit, rather than a positive one?

We need to know how we got a star. A simple way would to the ability to click on the star in somebody's name and have it display the post which recieved them such honor.

Call me silly, but it seems that if stars are a way to mark exemplary posts, there should be some way to click through to the starred posts associated with any user who has them. Or is there a way to do that and I just don't know about it?

I have a question, albeit slightly off topic. Why does the "remember your personal information for next time" thing NOT? I always hit yes, and it never does. :(

If it did (or maybe if you guys did a dual system - say, guest posting like how it currently is, or actually log in with a un/pass; or possibly even use that OpenID thing that LJ implemented a while back)... Anyway, if it was easier for me to make posts here, I would much more often. So many times I've started to make a comment, then gone, "eh, screw it". Or I have forgotten to check my email and confirm the comment.

Sorry for the off-topic, but this seemed more on-tpoic place for it than most other threads. ;)

The star system seems like a cool idea in theory, and I hope it actually works.

I think my biggest problem here though, is that I've never felt too encouraged to post-- Having to type my name and email address everytime I make a comment (Where it asks if I'd like my personal information remembered, I have yes selected, but it doesn't seem to do anything.), and then wait 30 sec for a link to appear in my email. Am I missing an obvious link to sign in that bypasses the need to confirm individual posts? Thanks.

I was wondereing what those stars were for. I like the idea of being able to see what post earned the star. Of course I hope the stars don't get handed out too easily, a star should be a special moment.

And we should get some swag with every 10th or 20th star. Just an idea to kick around.

This is so subjective. There are people that have found my comments useful, and yet, since many disagree with me, I probably don't get a star (even when just as many agree with me). Or is it because I was banned? Too aggressive? Hmm.

I wonder how many people have tried to write a comment to this article that has something "insightful, funny, analytical" so they too could get a star.

Of course it's going to be subjective. Basing it on opinion is going to be subjective by default. It would be just as subjective if the readers of Joystiq at-large picked who got stars. You're just arguing over which subjective process is going to be used.

Actually, so long as the criteria holds true and stars are only rewarded to
pithy comments that add value or continue a healthy debate, I can see this
as an excellent system to scan through very large collections of comments to
get to the select few that might be worth reading.

Not saying that any of you who have posted here on this thread are not worth
the read; but you know, those other guys that didn't post here... they're
the ones I'd like to avoid reading. eh hem...

Well, what I actually thought, was that "stars" depended on how much you contributed with news to Joystiq, *not* based on what some random guys a.k.a. Joystiq would like to hear, but especially would *not* like to hear; so maybe Jago is right.

I think I've contributed a lot to Joystiq, I've sent news, been thanked a third or less for the news I've sent, and have gotten much less stars than I probably deserve. Hell, I've posted a lot of comments; sure, I might be aggressive sometimes (when people piss me off with ridiculous comments), but I usually give good arguments with reasons for backing my opinion about how the future of gaming might be (while keeping an open mind, as opposed to thinking that I *must* be right like others here), and I hardly ever post uninformed comments here, much less comments like "OH IT DOSNT HAVE HALO SO I DONT BUY DRM SONY NOR CHILDISH NINTENDO LOL". It's people like those, especially the ones that keep repeating what they *like* as if it was much better than what others like, that should get negative stars or get banned (Snake2k9 keeps saying the same repetitive dull comments "I LIKE HALO SO EVERYTHING ELSE IS CRAP", or Suicide Ninja which happens to keep saying how Xbox 1.0 was the best best choice this generation despite the obvious conclusions that come from sales numbers, among others), not people that stir controversy, that provoke thoughts on everyone else instead of showing how you feel your opinion is superior because of your personal likes and dislikes, since that's one reason why threads are here.

"I have a question, albeit slightly off topic. Why does the "remember your personal information for next time" thing NOT? I always hit yes, and it never does. :("

Sorry about that. It's a bug. We hope it gets fixed soon.

"I know it will turn into a long day for you if we all ask, but...why did I get a star?"

Because you posted a constructive comment. =)

"Having to type my name and email address everytime I make a comment (Where it asks if I'd like my personal information remembered, I have yes selected, but it doesn't seem to do anything."

Definitely a bug. Sorry.

"I like the idea of being able to see what post earned the star."

We like it too. It's been added to the very long list of items we've asked for from the development team.

"Or is it because I was banned? Too aggressive? Hmm."

Because you resort to cheap personal attacks. It's possible to disagree with people without being disagreeable.

"It's people like those, especially the ones that keep repeating what they *like* as if it was much better than what others like, that should get negative stars or get banned"

We are giving out negative stars. Definitely.
