That's the final nail in the coffin for a bigger set of buttons. What's with micro-sizing the controls? I mean, even the original DS has miniscule buttons. I just hope the buttons aren't the clicky momentary switches that the original DS (and the SP, though those were at least a little bigger). I'm not getting my hopes up, though.

I was gonna say something about the porn shoot, but the first comment on the translated page summed it up pretty well:

"Trillion it put out and the bedspread"

Actually, uopn closer inspection of the internals, I stand corrected! Oh, joyous occasion, those are rubber and carbon contacts on the backs of the buttons! The beautifule Nintendo squish is back, and the ugly click is gone! Touching indeed *will* be good.

With such a powerful screen I hope they give the battery a higher capacity.

Joystiq, can you please post the battery life of the DS Lite? It seems a lot of people are in the dark about this matter.

Uh, no?

What about this design looks "childish" to you? Does it have pictures of Barney the Dinosaur all over it? Does it play Sesame Street music when you turn it on? Is it emblazoned with images of fairy princesses and unicorns?

I don't really see how any industrial design of a product like this could be considered "childish". Doesn't mean you need to like it, but I see nothing about this design that would appeal more to children than to adults.

What the DS Lite *does* look like is a modern Japanese piece of portable electronics. Which the original DS really doesn't; it looks a bit dated by Japanese design standards. I don't think Nintendo necessarily needed to do this, but the clean, simple lines and glossy finish is a bit more of a mass-market style than the original, more overtly techy and slightly bulkier DS was. If Nintendo's goal is to attract non-gamers, the DS Lite should do an even better job of it.

uh, wow Jeff. you know, there's really no need to criticize my comment over such a trivial matter.

getting defensive, are we?

i said i *OWN* a DS, so i'm not bashing it. it's just that when i look at them next to eachother, the DS Lite looks cheaper and dumbed down. it looks more like something made for and directed toward children. i didn't even say that it *WAS* childish. just that it looked more childish.

i am entitled to an observation, Jeff.

Childish? Au contraire, the DS Lite looks more sophisticated to me, because of its slimmer shape and small buttons.

Electronics for kids tend to be shaped so that they're easy to hold on to; which basically means adding bulk. The buttons are big so they're easy to press. And the whole thing has to be very durable, whereas the DS Lite looks more fragile than the original DS.

Just take a look at a LeapPad or the Firefly mobile for kids, which are larger than most laptops and cellphones respectively.

I really never gave getting a DS or PSP any thought before, but once this thing comes to the states I may have to go get one. I love that the screen is much brighter. That was always my biggest complaint with the original GBA, it was almost impossible to get a good view of what you were doing, even in a well lit room. I know nintendo fixed it with the GBASP, but the screen on this thing looks so bright that I could play it in outside on a sunny day and not even the brightest of glares would phase it. Cool Stuff. Count me in.

Since when have colors and circular buttons become kiddy? [Another flame]

"Joystiq, can you please post the battery life of the DS Lite? It seems a lot of people are in the dark about this matter."

When that info does come out it will come from a source that Joystiq links to...Joystiq doesn't have THAT much credibility to be able to some stuff on it's own.

As for this whole "childish" thing...I guess you must think Apple's designs are childish too then right? B/c Nintendo seems to be taking a very Applish-style design.

Oh, really, Jago? Does a certain 360 marathon mean anything? =) But at any rate, here are the numbers from the Aussie site referenced from the Fanboy page linked in my original post. Do with them as you will:

"To compare, the original DS ran anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, while the Lite's best performance is 15 to 19 hours, on the lowest brightness, and probably whilst playing GBA games, not harder-on-the-battery DS games. On the brightest screen setting, Lite promises to last 5 to 8 hours.

...In another slight improvement, Lite will take 3 hours to fully charge, as opposed to 4 hours of the original."

Sorry but websites like 1up.com, ign.com, gamespy.com, gamespot.com, etc. will have better credibility and are more trusted then a "blog" gaming website.

I'm not gonna say we have the same type of coverage as the bigger and more mainstream news sites out there, Jago. What I don't appreciate, however, is your challenging of our credibility. Able to [what?] some stuff on our own?

"Sorry but websites like 1up.com, ign.com, gamespy.com, gamespot.com, etc. will have better credibility and are more trusted then a 'blog' gaming website."

Actually, Jago, that depends on who you ask. Not considering any original content we might provide, there are quite a few people who only come to Joystiq for their gaming news. Blogs are blogs, but people don't like returning to blogs that aren't credible.

So I challenge your credibility...so what? The ONLY thing that keeps me coming back to this site is to see some of the smaller stories that fall thru the cracks or just funny stuff that floats around the web. But then again I also do that when I go to Kotaku...so Joystiq isn't THAT special.

I swear...some of you guys can't take criticism.

Jago, any site that would presume to have any sort of authority on news of any type needs to protect its reputation and maintain its credibility. If a news organization can't be trusted, what good is it? Lobbing criticism is fine, but if all you're going to do is use your comments to put down this site, particularly without providing reasonable context (you still haven't filled in the blank to my earlier question), you might as well do all your commenting on Kotaku (as "Joystiq isn't THAT special" to you). I'd hate to have to start deleting comments, so please hear what I'm saying.

I like Nintendo, but I'm tired of the doing of redesigning. First, when I have my GB Advance, I thought it was awesome, then they came with GB Advance SP so I trade in,thought it was the coolest, then I bought my DS just before the DS lite was annoucned....so now I'm sticking with my old DS. It has a unique color you won't find in the US, the black graphite......screw u Nintendo with your stupid redesigning crap.....what's next a pocket GC? When is enough, ENOUGH??--------------> Never.....:)
