this is the boomarang controller for the ps1 that I was talking about. I guess looking at it now, it doesn't look a whole lot like the ps3 controller.
but the form looks quite similar

Nobody "took" the picture. It's a still from a webcam. Look at the quality.

Either that, or the camera is low quality and he had it on the timer.

I don't see why everyone is complaining so much about the PS3 controller. Sure the boomerang shape is crap but with all the complaints all over the internet do you thing the third party companies are going to jump all over manufacturing dual shock shaped controllers for the PS3?

It looks like he is holding a cutout. Many poeple have mentioned the inconsistant lighting, but few have mentioned how obviously unrealistic the scale is.

Unless this guy has monster hands, and light has different rules in his room, this is fake.

"I have an artists's eye" blah blah blah "i live inside photoshop" blah blah blah... oh man, the ego that comes along with these "insider photos" is simply appalling. Whether you think it is real or not, who cares about your Photoshop skills, when you don't have to have an artist's eye, nor live in Photoshop, to tell this is fake.

There is absolutely _zero depth_ to the controller. It's not an "artist" or "photographer" thing, it's just so goddam _obvious_ based on that thing called "real life." Are you people blind?

Look at the bottom-middle indent on the controller. See the lack of shadow compared to his thumbs? Which leads into:

See how the Start and Select (or whatever they are, I don't recall) button in the middle are flat? Unless he had a small flashlight (because it would HAVE to be very focused) with a diffuser on it pointed directly at those two buttons, it clearly shows that what he is holding is indeed a flat piece of _whatever._ No shadow, no nothing.

See the directional pad? The (concept) controller has a curved surface. It's a fact that based on the _real_ light cast on his hands there would be clear and properly varied shadowing cast by the raised directional pad buttons. Same goes for the action buttons (square, triangle, etc).

See the light reflecting off of the pad and action buttons? Where is this light coming from? If that light was really present it would also illuminate his hand differently, since there's no way you'd get that kind of reflection in _just the buttons_ and not the sides nor insides of his fingers.

I could go on, but of course the old fact remains - who the hell only takes one crappy photo? Even that guy with the supposed Sidekick 3 took at least 3 very clear shots from very different angles, of a product with zero photos publicly available. When I took the Sprint fanboys for a ride about Sony-Ericsson releasing the T608 finally, I took a good clear photo of my hand actually holding a phone, then carefully edited in a heavily modified photo of a T608, and made sure that every bit of the lighting matched perfectly between both elements. _THAT_ is how a real designer works - if you can get people to say "Wait, what the hell, how?" then you've done a good job. But this is crap and you're all suckers to even think for a second that this shot is real.

Heck, if I had thought of it first I could have convinced you all that I had a working model of a PS3. It's actually quite easy:

1. I'd download the high-red direct feed MGS4 trailer from IGN. I'd grab a frame that could appear to be a gameplay shot. I'd barely have to blow it up (it would already be 640px wide) to 720p resolution, then display it on my 51" HDTV however I wanted.

2. I'd sit with a 360 controller in hand, get a friend to take a shot with a good camera, making sure my 360 console was clearly in the shot (both 360 items we later use for reference).

3. Using the _very available_ specs on the physical dimensions and form factor of the concept PS3 and controller, I'd construct a 3D model of it, then texture it with a few of the _many_ high-red press and live photos available all over the web. I'd make sure to take shots of the 3D model with the exact same lighting added that was in the photo of me...

4. Then I'd 'Shop the shots of the 3D model into the photo of me. I'd make sure to have photos of different angles of me with the controller and console.

The whole project is remarkably simple as long as you have the skill - total project time, 1.5 hours, if that. And it would screw with every PS3 fanboy's head for weeks. Problem is, no one takes the time anymore to craft a genuine hoax. Cardboard cutouts? Man, this country is getting laaaazyyyyy.

Justin you sound as out of hand as the rest of us...

Doing what you're talking about would be difficult to pull off in '1.5' hours, but maybe you can do it. I'd guess that your super 3D model would be harder to make look convincing than an Epson photo-paper cut out.

And to the guys saying it was up months ago, post the link - that would settle all of this. And to all the people wondering about why there's only one photo, maybe the guy has other pictures that he hasn't even posted yet, and he'll put some more up. I don't mind being wrong, but an answer would be nice...

It's not like it really matters, however, the machine probably won't even see 2006. A controller doens't even mean that much, especially one that people despise so much that it probably won't make it out anyway.

Definately fake. Think, why would he go through all the trouble of taking a picture of him holding the controller with both hands, he must be going to alot of trouble to hold the camera without any hands. He's trying to cover up the analog sticks that don't stick out since he's holding a cutout. And this isn't photoshopped, don't give this guy that much credit, it's just a paper cutout.

As a photographer and a regular Photoshop user I put my reputation on this being real.

The lighting would be far too hard to get right. it has depth.

It's real.. not that it's much good to him because he can't play it.

so i was looking at some of the lighting issues and it seems that there would have to be two sources of light to make the image work if it were real and i think i found the second source. if you look in the upper right hand corver it looks like there is a mirror reflecting a flash from a camera. now i think the picture might be real but the d-pad button look so flat, im guessing it's a mock up with differnet kinds of paint to relfect the light properly (see the button reflect differnet than the silver portion, maybe enamel?)

Ignoring everything, thbis is an old pic. It was taked by a guy who wanted to prove that the controller feals fine in human hands (Stay away BEARS!!!), and he admitenly says its a paper cutout stuck on a paice of card board. not that that takes much brains to figure out, i am just saying joystiq shouldnt post this kind of stupid stuff, especially if it not new. atleast if you called it "This guy loves holding his banana, eveything feals fine..." and use it as proof, but provoke useless specualtions, come on guys, you can do better that that!

Even if was real, it still wouldn't matter. Sony has already said that isn't the final design for the controller. And it doesn't control anything since the ps3 hasn't been finished yet. If it were real, it would be an empty plastic shell of a old controller design for an empty shell of an unfinished console.

It's a fake, but it isn't...the photo is actually a montage--two seperate photos combined to create a seamless new image. The photo of the controller and hands was taken back when the PS3 was introduced at the E3 last year. The background is just a generic home background. After the images were combined, effects such as noise and blur were added on top to further merge the two images. Just search for PS3 controller pics and you'll come across the original.
