Being a gaming dad with a slight geeky side to it for the last... several years (from the BBC B days and up) I can completely agree with this :)

Of course the rest of the world already knew this a couple of decades ago. Catch up people!

This is very true and I'm happy to say I experienced this as a child. Though I hope as I grow older I don't lose some of my touch or fondness of all things geeky as a grow older much like my father has. Though he is currently going through his second childhood and playing fps with my sisters, there was a long time period where he didn't play games.

Haha, of all people my mom maried it was a man who expressed love by taking all the highscore spots on Excitabike at the LSU student union and entering my mom's name on each spot on the leaderboard.

Glad he presented me with gaming and math before I could talk.

Power to the geeks,

Funny story here. We just had our first child 6 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to gaming with him already :)

The thing that made me realize being a gamer dad is going to be great comes from a time I was playing World of Warcraft. We had 4 people in our guild that we related mother, father and their two kids. At one point, the father almost grounded the oldest kid... through chat in WoW! Now if that's not geeky I don't know what is. All I know is that I would have loved to have been grounded through an MMORPG when I was a kid...

I've already become accustomed to taking out batteries from the xbox 360 wireless stick ... my 17-month-old has to hold his own controller whenever he sees me playing. I see nothing but great things coming from this.

Being a gamer yourself allows you to relate to your kids when they play games. It also gives you another avenue for socialisation with them and provides a great insight into how they're feeling.

It also helps you see that letting your kids play computer games is not a babysitting alternative but is instead an immersive experience that you can share with them.

Great article, thanks

Just don't let them get overweight and devoid of social skills ala the folks on Bnet/WoW forums, and everything will be alright
