In two conflicting statements, Sony has denied a report by Merrill Lynch
that suggested the PlayStation 3 could be delayed until next year, whilst simultaneously stating that the launch could be pushed back
because of delays in approval of the PS3's "final specifications" by industry consortiums. An article from Bloomberg Asia includes a quote from Kei Sakaguchi, a Sony spokesman in Tokyo saying that "there is no change in our original plan to release the console in spring 2006." Contradicting the Bloomberg report, BBC News paraphrases the words of an unnamed Sony spokesman: "Sony [is] waiting for final specifications - which are decided by industry consortiums." In the spokesman's own words: "the launch could be pushed back if [the specifications are] not decided soon."
We're not quite sure who's statement to believe. If the quote from the unnamed spokesperson in the BBC article is now the company's official line, then this is the first admission we've heard from Sony that suggests the company may miss its target of a spring 2006 launch. Something which analysts have been predicting for months.
