Classic Sierra adventure games re-released

Point and click adventure gamers rejoice! If you've been struggling to (legally) complete your collection of Sierra classics, Vivendi Universal is finally ready to give you just such a chance. They are releasing "compilations" of King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry, available March 30th through Amazon, Target, and who knows where else.
There is almost no other information about the compilations, except that they run on Windows XP. Have they been ported or are they running through an emulation layer like Sarien? Does the compilation include all the games in the respective series? At $20 each, this could be a great way to build that collection. Then they'll just need to release Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory... then maybe LucasArts will get in on it...

But where is Hero's Quest!? I want to "quest for glory" one more time... at least!
scottind @ Feb 23rd 2006 8:00PM
GTA:SA got that AO rating over the hot coffee scandle, and the LSL games only managed to get a M rating??? What kind of BS is that? The older LSL games is ALL ABOUT getting sex and i did remember LSL3 actually had pixelized bare breasts. Don't tell me that the graphic quality actually mattered (only polygon girls get AO ratings, but if its 2d its okay?), its the double-edged concept of what is acceptable that the ESRB thats shameful.
So maybe 5 years down the like we'll have a hot coffee poly sex girl and it will be considered. I wonder what would be considered AO in the future of gaming.

The last Quest for Glory compilation they put out ran fine on XP for me. It's a shame that series eventually just fell apart because "Hero's Quest" (which is what it was called when I bought it lol) was really the first PC game I ever got into. I can't even look at V.

Sorry, but I'll believe it when I see it. These have been listed on Amazon for months now and the release date keeps changing. While they would do well, at this point, I don't expect to be able to purchase them on the date given.

Hot Coffee is really beyond the sex shown in Larry. I mean, the worst of it was censored (such as in the original). Hot Coffee's problem isn't just about being naked or simply being related to sexual situations. It's the way it is so explicitly shown, which any one can quickly see by downloading a video of it.

EXCEPT Hot Coffee isn't actually part of the game. You can't pop in the game (unmodified) and see all that stuff. LSL on the other hand revolved around gettin' some and doing just about anything to do it...it was apart of the gameplay.

I know that I bought a space quest compilation back in the 90's for less than $50. About 10 years later it shouldn't cost more than $5. So by my reckoning, this entire collection of all four series should be $20. Not $20 a piece.
They're just porting the games to XP, so why not give them all to us for one low price. Oh, right... it's all about the profit margin. Damn.

About time! Nostalgia fans have been practically begging for a chance to buy these games for years. Just look at how popular scummDS (plays lucasarts point-n-click games on DS) is on the homebrew scene. And there is literally minimal cost to putting these games back into production, so its a win-win. Lucasarts would be (is) stupid for not doing something similar. I am ALL OVER that larry collection when it comes out...

Wow, a blast from the past. Brings back a lot of memories... the Sierra Network (INN), the massive Time Zone, Manhunter, Garbriel Knight, and their games from Dynamix.
Stoli @ Feb 23rd 2006 11:46PM
I agree, Robert. $20 a piece? Maybe if they updated the grahpics or something. No sale here.
Yardarm51 @ Feb 24th 2006 12:44AM
I'm still waiting for Grim Fandango. C'mon LucasArts give us a little more Mexican Day of the Dead lovin'!
Dave Silva @ Feb 24th 2006 1:42AM
... this is fake. Amazon is notorious for listing items that aren't released or even announced yet, simply because they get a lot of searches for them.
@Robert:
Actually, those compilations can go for quite a chunk of change on eBay. The Leisure Suit Larry compilation goes for $50 - disc only. If it's complete, it can go for over $100. All those compilations for $20? No way it can be done. $20 for well over 40 hours of gameplay per compilation is an excellent deal.
kioshi @ Feb 24th 2006 1:49AM
20 bucks a piece? OUCH!
No way, Jose.
shivam @ Feb 24th 2006 4:04AM
what, no love for Quest for Glory? Oh well, space quest is awesome beyond words anyway.
80s @ Feb 24th 2006 6:34AM
I believe I still have Hero's Quest on some 3.5" disks somewhere. I don't know if it would run on XP, or if the disks have degraded in the last 15+ years.
Ben @ Feb 24th 2006 7:13AM
I played most of the SQ's and all of the KQ's (I loved Mask of Eternity).
Whatever happened to the adventure genre? I know that Sierra went through all kinds of legal stuff and shut down this dept. or what not, but given how popular the free-roaming worlds of games like GTA are, why can't we get any more adventure games? I don't mean MMORPGs or "magic" games, but, well, games like Space Quest?
bryan @ Feb 24th 2006 7:23AM
I had most of these, and would buy them again to get them working right. My copy of KQ5 didn't play well with XP. I still proudly own a copy of SQ6, and the owners manual of PQ2. I hope this sends a message to Sierra to open these types of projects up again. I still love a good adventure game. Syberia and Syberia II were awesome. The KQ10 project (or whatever they renamed it, after the copyright infringement debacle) looks great, and I cant wait to see their finished product.
If your looking for better graphics? there have been excellent remakes of KQ1 and KQ2 produced, and freely distributed on the net. They are working on QFGII now

Are these compilations going to be any different than the compilations already released? By that, I mean I already own the LSL and Space Quest series on CDs and all work perfectly fine on XP. The LSL edition also includes the graphically updated LSL 1. Having Kings Quest and Police Quest finally should be fun, however.
Tony @ Feb 24th 2006 9:47AM
Jago - It is in the game. Developers are required to reveal anything "hidden" or what-not to the ESRB. They did not do so. Accessing Hot Coffee is as simple as putting in a code and in today's day and age, a company thinking some intrepid young player won't figure it out is ridiculously stupid.
Larry is about these things and has a certain level of it, but if you can point one of the games out to me that shows him thrusting into a completely naked women (clothed or not) or going down on her (without any sort of censor box) I'd be pretty damn surprised.
Aries @ Feb 24th 2006 3:11PM
I'm definitely going to get Space Quest and Police Quest as soon as they arrive in South Africa.
Pity there's no Quest for Glory and Gabriel Knight collection yet. QfG made me into the geek I am today.
As for QfG 5. It's by the same creators as the 'original' 4! So it's 3D. We all know how terrible 3D graphics can be. I mean just look at Half-Life 2! Despicable. (And that would be sarcasm) Just be grateful that it was made.
"If your looking for better graphics? there have been excellent remakes of KQ1 and KQ2 produced, and freely distributed on the net. They are working on QFGII now" Thanks a million for the link, Bryan

Don't any of you remember Lode Runner? That game rocked.
