Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of 2005)

PS2 - 101.37 million
Game Boy Advance - 74.25 million
Xbox - 24 million
GameCube - 20.61 million
PSP - 15.03 million
Nintendo DS - 14.43 million
Xbox 360 - 1.5 million

----

What I really don't get. So 100m PS2 are around worldwide... why even the biggest games like GTA only sell around 3m - 5m copies, in a market where 1m sold copies are a huge success already?

How does this add up? Also, I wonder how many of those 100m PS2 still exist... and run games.

that's what i get for taking a day off to work on real stuff. damn. missed a key news item.

here's sort of an interesting thought on the whole hitting the christmas season:

---

what if they miss spring and summer? what happens if they don’t want to do a multi-territory launch? they saw microsoft get hammered on supply issues. i’m not thinking they want to suffer through the same thing.

the problem is where to launch first.

if they pass up the u.s. to launch in japan, they are missing the mighty black-friday-ensuing-madness that is the north american shopping season. that’d be bad. however, if they don’t launch in japan, how many will buy 360’s in protest? prolly none. but, they’d buy the shit out of the revolution.

I love the sheer confidence in Sony by many of their fans, but if you remember, Nintendo was once the undisputed champion of gaming. What happened to them? Let's do some simple math, It costs Sony $800 to make the PS3. if all 100 million people that bought a PS2 buy a PS3 at $400, how is that a success for Sony? Software sales wouldn't even help recoup from such drastic losses. All this rant and rave about "trust sony" "they won't delay" blah blah blah. I refuse to blindly spend my money on tech that I don't need
