We already know from a certain previous
report that trying to pin
a price on a gaming console as intricate as the PS3 is not an easy task. But that won't stop anyone from giving it a
try. CNET recently sat down with a number of sources (one of which was Merrill Lynch) to try and play their hand at
component pricing. Bear in mind, they even come out and say these are estimates, so the speculation hasn't ended
yet. This report doesn't differ very much from the one we saw not too long ago, and the beef of the total cost comes out in the pricing of the Blu-ray and Cell processor. However, when they took the low-end cost projections for these components, the total came out at around $725 (compare that with the $476 figure that analysts have said the 360 averaged). Guesstimate junkies are still placing the retail cost of the PlayStation 3 at the range of the Xbox 360: $299 and $399. There's no telling how much this could change, if any, by the launch date. But either way, we know that if Sony wants to remain competitive, they're going to have to take a financial hit to secure a spot in most gamer's homes.
