Alternate Reality gaming?
Is that like virtual reality or have I missed something? Is it like a game in a second life type thing? Do I have to take anything? Sounds trippy whatever it is.

It's not really traditional "virtual reality" (think big heavy VR goggles) and it's not a standalone game/world like Second Life; you don't have to take anything unless you want to ;)

An ARG in its most common form is a puzzle trail across websites. A website, or set of sites, maintain a fictional reality -- in the I Love Bees ARG, the site ilovebees.com was being corrupted by a mysterious entity, with messages hidden in the source and in JPG files. This branched out into a series of phone calls to phone boxes around America, which players answered to hear recordings of a set of stories from the same world.

Following an ARG and taking part in it is quite like playing a video game -- you know it's all fictional but you go along for the ride anyway. With some of the earlier ARGs, the slogan "This Is Not A Game" was used; with humans behind the game (puppetmasters pulling the strings of all their fictional characters) causing the game to change daily, it's hard to tell where fiction became reality.

Anyway, playing an ARG is the best way to start -- unfiction.com and argn.com have the info on some that are currently running, including Perplex City and EDOC Laundry which have both been mentioned on joystiq. :)

Hum. Sounds like over-done version of a fun-rally that car/motorcycle clubs do. Of course, the joy for doing one in your club is that you get to have fun with your car/motorcycle. With this, it seems like you just have fun with a marketing fantasy...
