PSP v3.0 pics surface -- authenticity in question
A slew of new PSP firmware v3.0
pictures, courtesy of YourPSP.com forum user Katjana, have begun circulating the Internet. As always, the authenticity
of the images is in question. Still, we can't help but be intrigued by the features that could be coming in Sony's next
big firmware update:- Sony Mail
-
SonyPaint
- Sony Organiser (notice the use of an "s" and not a "z" in
"Organiser")
- AlarmClock
- Writepad
- Console Security
- Music Store connectivity
- PS3 connectivity

"And, while a direct-download service offering music is nice, why not include videos and XBL Arcade-esque games?"
What they should do is have a P2P network and actually use the hombrew community to their advantage. Games could be created from user to user, and you could download them via infrastructure mode for say like 2 bucks!
Take that itunes!
Matt @ Feb 27th 2006 2:14PM
The fact of whether there's an "s" instead of a "z" in "Organizer" should have nothing to do with impacting the authenticity of the pictures (unless I'm oblivious to something).
Many words which use a "z" in "American English" use an "s" in "British English".
Organiser, Localisation, etc... Get the picture? (No pun intended - honestly).

Too bad Sony discontinued their line of technically superior Clie handhelds to concentrate on this kludge on wheels.
Text input via gaming controls is retarded at best, horrific at worst.
Combine that with Sony's UMD orphanware and an ENTIRELY ARBITRARY 4GB limit imposed on the hardware and you've got one big, fat ZERO for any serious multimedia fun.
I hear some great original non-ported games could possibly be rumored to be developed in the future!
Maybe.
darryl @ Feb 27th 2006 2:19PM
Personally, I don't believe that. Sony doesn't think of the PSP as a PDA. It's a PMD, or personal media device. Games, music, video with limited extras like a very simple web browser for accessing online media.
"What happened to gaming?"
With four new games released this week, I'm pretty sure that's a rhetorical question. Sony said the PSP is a media device, not just for gaming folks. So far, they seem to be aligned with that description.
If any handheld COULD be a PDA, it would be the DS for obvious reasons.
Fake, fake, fake.
Jago @ Feb 27th 2006 2:20PM
Something doesn't look right in those screenshots...the fonts look "different."
Unless of course they're planning on changing the whole font and layout with future updates.
Angry @ Feb 27th 2006 2:22PM
While British spelling is acceptable, why would we see breakthrough 3.0 firmware screens using British-style spelling. The UK is always the last to get everything (Sorry guys). Doesn't seem fitting that 3.0 would first be seen there.
Spamalot @ Feb 27th 2006 2:26PM
That application icon doesn't even match. Pleeeese. so fake

If these are real, it can mean only one thing. The next revision of the PSP will have a touch screen. It is the only way any of these functions would be remotly usefull. Especially SonyPaint.

If the PSP is a Personal Media Device, then maybe they should call it that instead of Playstation Portable. The name 'Playstation' identifies with what? Gaming, as in the highest selling home console of the last generation. The name itself tells me, as a consumer, that this is a game device. Hell, the control setup tells me it's a game device. Sony can't hide the fact now that they had this planned to penetrate the handheld gaming market. I don't think it's going as well as planned, so they try to implement this new strategy to focus on its multimedia capabilities. If that image is real...they need a touch screen...using the given controls will be a pain in the ass.
Jay @ Feb 27th 2006 2:52PM
... Fuzz actually believes Sony will be adding a touch screen :D *chuckles all around*
frankly no. Thats a fake. Like it has already been said. Leaked shots would be of Japanese firmware, seeing that Versions come from Japan and spread around the world. I mean why would they launch the UK one first?
The use of Z in the american rendition of the British language is laughable. You can just imagine those people all those years ago "well ma, we've already destroyed mom, lets add an unnecessary Z instead of S!" "Oh Zteve! You are zo smart lolzerz"
This is just as stupid and obviously fake as those Rev mockups.
Grudge @ Feb 27th 2006 2:57PM
DCSimian, are you forgetting that the PS2 (Playstation Two) plays DVD's and CD's?
Progress, progress, progress.
Fuzz @ Feb 27th 2006 3:05PM
Jay, I said IF. It would be stupid of Sony to release those fetures without a touch screen, as they would be worthless. And since Sony likes to copy Nintendo's ideas, I don't see it being a big stretch to add a touch screen, since they are adding onboard memory and a camera as well. But then, Sony does alot of stupid things. But like you said, the screens are fake, so it is all moot.
rayk @ Feb 27th 2006 3:07PM
Oh I soooo hope 3.0 does have some kind of paint program! I've been dying for one ever since getting my psp (the home brew one doesn't work too well - cos I'm on 2.0).
Even without touch screen, paint program would be awesome! Digital sketch book on the go - yes please! (even if your using a analogue thumb to control it).
Mike Street @ Feb 27th 2006 3:11PM
I agree with #8. There's not possible way most of that could work unless the screen was touch sensitive. So I have to give it a FAKEOLA sticker.
mike @ Feb 27th 2006 3:14PM
Too many mistakes. Macaddresses change (he didn't double check content with the pictures he loaded into his psp. Fonts are different. PS3 logo is probably not going to use the ps2 font. Glow is different.
Anyone with photoshop could have made those images, put them into their psp and take photos of it.
Im mean are you going to believe this pics

this means you have to have a hdtv with the new connections.. not components, in order to play ps3 games on the blu ray drive
Draco @ Feb 27th 2006 3:40PM
more likely a PSP2 (with touchscreen) then a new firmware upgrade.
either way though I have my doubts.
TIP @ Feb 27th 2006 3:43PM
That whole ''organiser'' thing....well I've done my research and found out the organISER was a PDA from Sony. It's possible they can be putting some of the pda features on the PSP? Well, I can't wait for the nww firmware to come as they will make the PSP compatible with the 4 and 8 gb cards. This is why I like my psp more than my DS, Sony releases updates for more features for the psp, rather than making some redesign, making you buy new hardware.
SquallTiofae @ Feb 27th 2006 3:45PM
Ushman, you clearly lack reading comprehension. Nothing to do with Blu-Ray games, just movies.
rubaiyat @ Feb 27th 2006 4:01PM

Of course nothing forces you to buy a new DS. It will do exactly the same things as the old one. All the redesign does is entice people that have yet to get one to rethink that stance.
slow news days @ Feb 27th 2006 4:03PM
I agree with Fuzz, this would seem to point to a future version of the PSP with a touch screen. These options would be tedious without one, although certainly still do-able. Is there a new PSP in the works?
Metacore @ Feb 27th 2006 4:08PM
Although the photoshop possibilty is real, What is that A thing? I doubt a photoshop guy would put anyconsideration into that, although I agree, the Email should be in the netwrok part. A reason it might not be in japanese is the saem reason I was able to download the japanese 2.00 and still play it in english, I don;t really know why this was questioned in the first place.
Ignoring all that, there are two things that are still not clear to me, buth are in the Harddrive tab. 1 is the PS2 logo, but a 3 where a two should be, I thing this is what sont should have done, but they didn't. What changed? hope that would be the logo though... and 2, it says 14.6(or something close to that) free space in the hard drive, if this is real, how close are they to finishing the PS3, and if they are close, didn't Ken Kutaragi say it would only be 60 and 80 gigbyte hardrives, what coudl fill it up so much(again, if it is real) does this mean a more reaosnable 20 gig hardrive with Linux , or a modified Windows(modified for size), or what?
anyone else cath anything. Oh and to the photoshop guy(who made the PSP firmware 9) great job! Can you add an extra XMB icon from a scratch 2.00 bar? I am not implying anything, I just want to see if that is even possible in the first place, the work you already did helped disprove the sub menues, can you help with the wierd A icon. Please don't cheat by using the supposed 3.00 firmware, you have to use a 2.00 firmware, and (the really hard part) if you noticed the background doesn;t change according to the chosen icon, so the background would have to be aligned with the chosen icon, also, the other icons have to be small as if not selected.
I really thing this is immposible, you would have to be able to take a picture if the XMB without any icon selected, and part it in the right place. another good one is the really upclose bad quality ones, where all the weird LCD screen lines are consistently overlaping the text. The one last possibility i Think, and if I'm wrong sorry about being a total noob since I don't really know anything about programming. Would it by possible to use a firmware dumper, edit the firmware, than install it? I am guessing even if it is possible it would be very hard, just going by the fact that no one did it before, and if it was possible why they didn;t just add homebrew or something wierd.
Raul Robles @ Feb 27th 2006 4:18PM
The pics are fake # 16 is right too many mistakes. The most obvious one the shadow lenght, on the docotored ones there is little to no shadow, not to mention the glow( its pretty damn hard to get all the pics to not have the select glow, it would be nice if the PSP had all that. But its a nice pipe dream, the guy could brush up on his photoshop, maybe be as cool as the video ipod guy.
Sam Kimpton @ Feb 27th 2006 4:25PM
What do you mean "what happened to gaming"? The people working on the firmware aren't the same people working on the games. It's not like the firmware programmers are actually EA game developers... the more functionality my PSP has the better, I say.
Dave @ Feb 27th 2006 4:42PM
There are just too many mistakes for this to be real. In particular... did they really think that A icon would match the rest of the icons? Firstly, it flat out doesn't fit... looks "pasted" right on with no consideration. Even beyond that, compare it to the simple aesthetic of the others... controller, globe, etc... it isn't even CLOSE to fitting.
mike @ Feb 27th 2006 5:00PM
The next revision of the PSP will have a touch screen.
--
you can't add features like that. the DS redesign added brightness features, but no actual functionality.. you CANNOT upgrade the system in teh middle of its life, screwing the first half of your userbase. won't happen. next.

I've been convinced that these are fake, and it's not because of the stupid 'Organiser' misunderstanding, either. This is what convined me:

In other news Sony add an 8gb NAND memory drive, a camera, a flip-design and a touch screen. It is named the Sony Clie and because of the old tech+new tech the device goes for an extra £200. A decade later and we're still waiting for the games.
Ross @ Feb 27th 2006 6:09PM
Go in and read the real article...you can see there is a PS3 hard drive icon....also notice how its uses the old ps2 logo instead of the new "spiderman 2 logo" fake to me until I see it from a realiable source
Gareth @ Feb 27th 2006 7:13PM
It's interesting how so many people assume using an 's' instead of a 'z' means it's a fake.
If this software was developed in Japan and translated by a Japanese translation department inside the Sony building, which would they use? Proper/British English or the bastardised American version? Does anyone actually know?
keybladeboy777 @ Feb 27th 2006 8:17PM
If this were real, Sony would have released it by now. Assuming this is real, then Sony would have released it by now unless it had bugs. Sony wouldn't keep it from us if it was already leaked.

Anyone notice the date is metric (day first, than month) that should put a stop to all this Organsier/Organizer stuff
Metacore @ Feb 28th 2006 12:50AM
Also notice the Date changes (from the 22 of febuary, to the 27) and the mac adress changes too. wierd...
Metacore @ Feb 28th 2006 1:10AM
Also noticed in one you can see the USB is pluggen in, and in other you can see it isnt. and than some you just can;t see because it too close up. Also there are wierd blue mark all over the screen, not sure what it is, to mme it looks like the morks on my friends LCD screen he got from leaving his Iskin on the keyboard while closing the screen. maybe its just a reflection though. Also noticed the lighting changedbetween the 27th and 22 second one. and if no one mention it before, it went from 3.00-GOLD- TO 2.90-C9(not in that order).
seems like in all the 22nd ones the mac adress, nickname, and PSP version are different than the later 27th ersion where the version is 3.00(-GOLD). Also there is no AM/PM meaning the 24 hour clock was selected, meaning it was 4 and 3 AM, donlt know if that helps much though...
Another thing is arn't the X and O buttins inverted in Japan, and it says O Back in all of them, so if its anywhere, it would be england, going by the inverted thing, which I am not sure of.

Wondering about the "Connect" stuff. With all the interest in streaming audio, and it looks like the Connect web site has streaming web "radio" if I understood it properly (but I haven't tried it - will soon, though), could one of the media related icons be for this??? Just wondering out loud.
