Kyle over at Video Game Media Watch questions the video game press' tendency to look towards
next-generation titles to the exclusion of promising titles for consoles still on the market. Provoking his article was
the latest cover from the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine which loudly asks the question
"Black: the last great PS2 game?" The magazine actually contradicts this statement as early as the
Editor's introduction which lists several games that people still have to look forward to on the PS2 (e.g.
FFXII, Godfather, Okami, and Tomb Raider: Legend).Kyle doesn't blame journalists for looking forward; "journalists are obviously going to be excited about the new opportunities inherent in new technology" but he suggests that focusing so exclusively on future platforms does a disservice to the majority of readers that aren't willing to move on as fast. In the end a balanced approach is essential when it comes to console transitions.
You can read more about how the console manufacturers themselves are being affected by the transition in our article Why's the original Xbox cost more now? You see, game journos aren't the only ones that are tempted to cut their ties with old and senile last-generation systems.
