10 years ago this month, Nintendo coined
the final name of its third generation console, the N64. Wikipedia writes: "During the developmental stages the
N64 was referred to by its code name, Project Reality... Once unveiled to the public the name changed to Nintendo Ultra
64, referring to its 64-bit processor, and Nintendo dropped 'Ultra' from the name on February 1, 1996, just five months
before its Japanese debut."The system would be released stateside later that year on September 29. Enter Mario 3D madness in the form of Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 multi-player battles, and limited third-party support as compared to the SNES and NES.
