A first look at Heroes of Might and Magic V

Following a petition by frustrated beta testers to delay Heroes of Might & Magic V until improvements were made, Primotech has added a rather negative preview of the game to Ubisoft's list of criticisms. The reviewer cites problems with the battle system, the resource trading process, and the time limits imposed on town management.

So how much time does developer Nival have to polish up this reinvented franchise? Gamespot lists an April 4 release date, the Ubisoft site says May, and Amazon's projected availability is June 30. Unless we see some positive press soon, the later date is probably the safer bet.

I hope they take longer and make the game worth the wait. I liked HOMM4, but a lot of people didn't. I still have fond memories of HOMM3 hotseat games, and the DEMO of HOMM2 essentially took the entire second semester of my freshman year in college away from me. I will probably never play a game that obsessively again, but I'd like to at least get comparable entertainment value out of HOMM5.

While I didn't like HOMM4, I was all about HOMM 2 and 3. I can't remember how long I played HOMM 2 for, but it was for the longest that I've played any game for, I think (well, aside from WoW...). It makes me sad that HOMM 5 is in a bad state when it is already in beta - that does not give me very high hopes for the final release. Sure, they have more time know, but some of these flaws seem like basic design decisions - and that's not something that can be fixed in a matter of months.
