What I don't get, Is why Sony is always trying to make such a big deal out of power and graphics. You don't need multiple cell processors to play a game. The more power it has, The more easily it will overheat and cause problems. And graphics can only go so far. What will Sony do when graphics look so good that they can't improve on them? Then what are they supposed to do? Haven't you noticed that all Playstation consoles have nothing special about them, And that they always talk about graphics and power. So far Nintendo is the only company actually giving us "TRUE" next-gen capabilities. We have had stunning graphics and power with computers for a while now, So why does Sony call their PS3 next-gen? In my opinion, I think the Nintendo Revolution will win the console wars not only because they aren't gonna charge $500.00 for a game console, But because they are trying something that will revolutionize gaming. Besides, When Sony and Microsoft see how successful the Nintendo Revolution is with their controller, They are gonna copy Nintendo's idea because they weren't smart enough to try something new.

People can forget about the Playstation 3 for months and never think about it again. But once Sony comes and says the PlayStation 3 will be launch in such month and at xxxx price people will fly to the stores to buy one for 2 reasons. 1) Fans, Fans, Fans and 2) Sony is the greatest name in both Games and Electronics!!!

i have to agree with justin, that is the sad truth alot of times.

it really wont matter if the ps3 is better or not, some fans will just buy it no matter what. of course that is the same for any brand, but since sony is such a dominant player, that base is much larger.

but i see a possible problem for them. i havent heard any word about rpg luanch titles. most big fans of sony are also big fans of rpgs since sony has snagged all the great franchises. with no ff13, kingdom hearts 3, etc, expected for a time after luanch, that will make many of those people think twice.

i know ill probably be waiting to get a ps3 since im an rpg fan and thats really what keeps me coming back to the ps2 and planning to buy a ps3. i already have a 360 for all of my other gaming needs such as fps, fighting, etc.

It will be interesting to see if Sony produces a knockout punch to Microsoft's attempt to capture the next gen crowd.I shall watch the fight with exstatic eyes and shall enjoy every moment while they deliver blow upon blow to each other. This is a war and the outcome is unknown but exciting all the same.I got a 360 but if it dies it dies, but if it reigns supreme then I will congratulate myself on a bet well placed.

Damn you people are really pshyced about the ps3 and it hasnt even come out yet or not price point has been mentioned. I wonder, if this topic is about the ps3 how many of you posting in this blog are casual gamers since the ps3 most likely to appeal to majority of casual gamers east and west. Im no sony fan but i have alot of respect for sony espicially in the electronics entertainment sector. Spring is only a couple of weeks away and a couple days ago AAC was finalized for blu ray there is no way the ps3 is going to launch anytime soon. I think its my best bet for sony to delay the ps3 launch for japan until late this year and for the U.S spring 2007, by then ps3 parts will probably be slightly cheaper and casual gamers can expect a ps3 at 400 dollars or below. Sony really has alot to loose, many casuals hope nintendo will die but that company is still riding high on its software and hardware which makes more money then sonys entire gaming division. Cough cough im not a nintendo fanboy. I dont think the ps3 can save sony from its problems. Sony Vaio has relatvitly no market share in the PC market, there is no way for sony to take out dell. Sony fucked up the entire walkman line. Sony pulled a nintendo in portable music like sticking to formats that were not superior like minidisc and atrac. Discless future is here didnt the recent news of apple selling 1billion itunes song signaling a death to CDS and DVDS even blu ray and HDDVD aswell. Any way i hope there is some good news tomorrow about the ps3. Sony screwed up its TV line against samsung Panasonic and sharp, the sony bravia line tv sucks everywhere on earth except for America its like the psps of TVs for sony. Sony psp is even get outdone by the DS globally. Sony really has alot to loose espicially sicne alot of mainstream people who are casual gamers own an apple ipod and a dell pc on the side, so sony has alot of work cut out for them, and a huge failure to convince people to buy other sony branded products instead of a playstation. Lots of casual gamers will be extremely dissaopinted if the ps3 cost anywere between 400-500 dollars U.S at launch. I be surprised if sony launches the ps3 for 300 dollars, people everywhere are going to go mad except for me im going to be playing a 360 and a revolution. Just hope apple dont launch a console anytime soon, I would really love oa diskless console and thats the near future. IF apple launches a console playstation will be very indboubt but thats only a dream for me.

This was a great topic. I loved reading the replies, but burgniel, you are naive if you think Sony has spent the last three years building an online component to battle Xbox Live. If anything the project is less than a year old.

Right now it's the battle of PR. I agree with the many points said by others. Sony might be saying nothing to allay fears or concern and stop people from jumping while yes 1) some people already probably jumped (2) and yes some people will wait and buy the ps3 no matter what.

The greatest thing MS did by launching next gen first with the 360 was put Sony on the defensive (whenever they want to admit that or not).

#50. "50. How do you know that sony aren't ready? how do you know that everything isn't ready to go, and sony are just waiting for the right time?"

Because it takes time to get the retailers on board. Typically stock orders are done 3 months in advance. If Sony wants to have the PS3 on store shelves in "Spring" then the units need to be in manufacturing now and the orders from retailers need to have already been placed.

This still hasn't happened according to the head of Famitsu.

I see the Sony fanboys have quite a bit of optimism. They need to since not even they know wtf Sony is up to. History has shown that every Playstation launch has been plagued with shortages, hardware issues, and a generally poor game lineup. While the game lineup is hard to gauge at this time...its almost a fact those laughing at the 360 shortages or hardware issues...will be laughed at themselves for the PS3's iminent launch hardware issues and shortages. Also, they have usually launched the PS3 in Japan first months before the U.S.. So unless they plan on launching it in Japan this summer and have a fall U.S. launch (Unlikely), or have a Japan/U.S. launch simaltaneously this fall (think 360 level shortages)...OR launch the PS3 in the U.S. first then in Japan (unlikely due to past history of launches)....its possible the PS3 may slip into early 2007 for the U.S.

The problem is nothing has been said about the PS3 AT ALL since E3 by Sony. And even they have admitted Blu-Ray related manufacturing issues. (Which could lead to some fault drives at launch.) And if you go by what the developers are saying that are making games for it...the PS3 at earliest will launch this summer in Japan with a fall U.S. launch. Problem is with E3 in May that wouldn't leave much time for anything.

I believe Sony didn't plan for a 2006 launch of the PS3 originally. The only reason they even mentioned it was to try and take some attention away from Microsofts system. The problem is, as we have come to find out that unless its a perfect world, the tech demos shown at E3 for the PS3 will NOT be what the PS3 games look like, but rather much closer to 360 levels. As well, by saying its that much more powerful supposedly compared to the 360, should the games look too similar to 360 games (which most all developers say it will), many will be underwhelmed because of the promises Sony made about the PS3. All indications (obvious ones) are that Sony acted too soon and with too much arrogance. That can and WILL work against it. Would you pay $100 or even $50 more for a system that can do much the same, the games look almost identical, and has much the same games as the one below it that costs $50-$100 less? Maybe the hardcore players will. But the average joe won't. Even if it does say Sony. Sorry fanboys, but in the world of economics and reality, you are a small minority. Sony could crank out the Crapstation 5 and you would buy it just because it says Sony. Sony could know its crap, the average joe could know its crap, reviewers could know its crap, but the fanboys will still praise it as Sonys best work ever! That kind of blind loyalty DOESN'T help a company. Never has. Now I see why there is so much optimisnm amongst the fanboys. Because frankly, at this point and time, they have nothing else to look forward to (except a delay) and Sony is helping the cause by staying as quiet (for obvious reasons..otherwise bad news can hurt its stick even more and make things worse financially).

Well at least Nintendo now can try for some sort of comeback while Sony tries to find ways to release the PS3 with decent components...without dropping the price so much it practically kills itself...but not so high in price only the hardcore adopters are the only ones buying it. Like the PSP proves....Sony only cares about flaunting specs that actually have little use for the average joe. Just look at its huge # of average games and hundreds of UMD movies for it at the same price you can buy a DVD at that has more features. Yep...Sony needs to fire the guy making these decisions. In the end the average joe doesnt care about the Cell or Blu-Ray. If all they see it as is an expensive Xbox 360...then expect even some of its fanboys to jump to the 360 or just stick with a PS2...which you and I know will be much cheaper. And if the PS3 launches at anywhere near $300...be worried about wtf kind of cheap parts they made the system with that will most likely 3 months from now cause you to return the system or send it in for repair.

I believe Sony is in marketing hell right now.

A) Microsoft is on its way to dominating the video games market. If theres one thing Gates knows, its how to compete on the market place. The first Xbox was only a test run at the gaming world. It accomplished what it originally set out to do:
1)Establish a globally recognizable video games brand associated with microsoft
2)Pioneered in the online gaming space so that it could eventually connect xbox to the rest of the microsoft empire. Largely by fusing xbox live with other software related items (MSN search, MSN messenger, live.com)
3)Introduce the emerging youth to Microsoft in a whole new way...as a video gaming system.
3)Built strong relationships with major software game developers: EA, Midway, Tecmo, so that it could help leverage them in a possible fight beyond gaming consoles...Cell phones, portable Xbox/handheld, internet gaming, etc.

So whats next for Microsoft?
B) The xbox 360 was created as a gaming device that would dominate the gaming world.
1) The buzz started with the original xbox users that told others about it...But those that didn't hear about will be naturally attracted to its 21st Century look and feel. They designed the Xbox to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible so that the youth, the parents, and even former gamers will be attracted to the console. They want to broaden the appeal, then strike by offering a huge selection of games to everyone, Once they strike, they will milk it for all the money its worth and then stay on top by releasing newer design models. Kind of like all the variety of ipods, and gameboys taht exist.
2) MIcrosfot will push the Xbox into every feasible market in the world until the mindshare will continue to grow exponentially towards their advantage. Microsoft will slowly but surely push sony out the way and dominate another sector.

Gates is playing for keeps fellas...

If Sony is serious about staying on top they need to either release the ps3 as soon as possible, or concede the fact that it won't be ready but quench the thirst of the consumers by releasing more psp related games that reaffirms the customers support of the brand. It is apparent that they want to milk the ps2 for all that its worth, but they need to gradually ease the importance of it while builidng up the importance of ps3, and mentioning the psp as a complementary companion to it. Leverage your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

However they need to act quickly in assembling their forces, because by the end of 2006 the 360 will have reached its stride. It will be well placed to land a decisive victory over the PS3. It will have a large enough fan base to feel comfortable in slashing the price of the xbox (10-12 million 360's sold), Halo 3 will be waiting in the quiver, as well as the movie, toys, and other apparel. The xbox live service will have exploded by this time by releasing numerous new online offerings and will become the undisputed standard for online console gaming (like itunes is to music). It will have secured even more exclusive games and the pure mindshare around the world will already be tilte towards the 360.
Sony if your gonna do something...please do it now or risk the survival of your company.

What's this talk of "sony doesnt traditionally show footage until release"? They love to show CG rendered previews and pass them off as real months/year before any console is even released (E3 2005).

Fact is, where there's smoke there's fire. Sony's delaying the PS3 for many technical reasons - be it problems or merely setting up business partnerships, nutting out blu-ray, etc. Ps3 wont be seen till 2007. Chances are, it will be stripped down of features initially promised e3 2005.

Also, if Sony isn't worried at all by their competitors, then they wouldn't acknowledge that fear by immediately copying XboxLive and the Ninty controller, as well as other ideas they're still trying to incorporate into an unfinished console design.

The development kits haven't even been given out, so no chance of a ps3 till later this year, early next year....at this rate.

The one good thing in all this - it looks like Sony are waiting and doing the PS3 launch properly, from a technical standpoint. Waiting till the HDCP spec is finished, and Blu-Ray is locked down. On Sony's current specs, they can't supply and compete with the 360 direct on price - the cost of the 360 is always going to be lower (primarily because of the Blu-Ray drive). Attempting to do so would't make sense.

Of course, if they push the release back another 8 months, then the 360 is old news, and they can push the new technologies (Blu-Ray, and true HDTV movie content) they offer above the 360 as a real marketing point. You're not then competing direct against the 360, you're offering next-gen and a half. If you're going to offer all these new things, then you have to commit to them properly - which, it seems, Sony are willing to do. (As a bonus, other component costs decrease by the day).

Will it work? No idea. But it's food for thought, and the installed base of HDTV will only increase with time.

As mentioned - getting the jump at the start isn't all important, if Sony are still shipping PS3's by the truckload in 2009/2010, when the 360's DVD-9 and non HDCP movie output looks seriously lacking, and the overall cost has come down enough that you're making profit on the console itself (like the PS2 now).

Then again, who knows what MS can do for the Xbox sofar as external HD-DVD, or Blu-Ray drives go. At least they have the option of choosing whoever wins. As long as they can keep the games on DVD-9, give everyone fair warning (so you don't buy a 360, then find there's a HD-DVD version on the shelf the next day), then everyone's happy.

Me? I'm buying a Revolution, i feel. The whole industry is shifting (and each manufacturer carving their own path), and the old 'head to head' we saw from NES to Master System, and even PS2, Xbox, and GC isn't going to happen anymore, because the manufacturers have realised that having your own big slab of market is easier than sharing it three ways with someone else.

It's a no show because it is all just a hoax. That and Sony is still trying to come up with additional new proprietary media memory from which to rape the consumer and obtain extra revenue while also opening up all your hardware to viruses via root kits.
Bend over and spread the ass cheeks wide because Sony is coming.

Sure, Sony "would" pick up royalties on BR movies, IF AND ONLY IF "BLUE RAY" becomes the new format. Sony doesn't know what the new movie format will be. It could easily be HD-DVD. Maybe the only Blue Ray out there will be several ps3 games several years down the road when this "BLUE RAY" shit becomes cheaper, and games require a whole lot more space. Who knows, it's possible Sony will change their mind later this year when they find out what will be the dominant format. As for the cost of the ps3, there is no way in hell that the system will sell for $900. That's currently how much it would cost now to build a PS3. You gotta remember, the PS3 will cost several hundred dollars less to develop 18 months from now, and will likely be sold at a loss just like the 360. I just don't see it selling for more than $499 USD.
