Samus returns as... a Metroid paperweight
The Penny
Arcade crew live in an alternate dimension. One where donuts come by the pallet-load, and very
exclusive Metroid Prime: Hunters shwag--in the form of this decorative paperweight--is freely given
away. Yeah, we know, decorative paperweight is normally a pejorative term for something that serves no other purpose than to sit there and look pretty so we'll let Tycho--who knows his way around a word or two--describe it himself:
"It's three dimensional, tiny bubbles like "voxels" (remember those?) describe the entire image. These objects (along with their black case/purple velvet interior) were given to the developers when they completed First Hunt for the DS launch. So owning it makes me feel a little like a fraud, but then I gaze into its tranquil depths and the world (with all its troubles) disappears."
Dreamy.

They should try auctioning it off for Child's Play....I bet it would fetch a mint and a half.

Ever since Metroid went 3D, I've considered it a paperweight.

When I first read the headline, I thought you were referring to my Gamecube. xD
I kid, I kid, I am a Ninty fanboy after all. =)
Those guys are lucky. They get the cool swag, all I get are stickers. I'd like to get it if they auctioned it off, though I'd expect it to get to a high price, so I would never get it. Man... =(

Does anybody know how to make one of those? They kick ass.

my mom has one of those paperweights where the image inside is drawn in 3d. the way it's 3d inside looks awesome.

Surreal. There's cart at the local mall that sells things like that--obviously not with video game motifs, but with things like butterflies and mermaids and all that other fluffy stuff. It looks really cool, but the lack of good themes for the bubblepics inside rather dissuades me from buy them. I'd totally buy that off them in a heartbeat, though. (My sensibilities, in the form of a cheeky butler, say: "Another piece of tawdy gamer memorobelia to sit alongside those Ocarina of Time action figures. Your tastes are impeccable, madam.")

I would buy one of those if I could! (Do ya hear that, Nintendo?)

Well, Hunters has been pushed back so many times for additional features (wasn't it *originally* slated for launch with the DS? It's been so long, I can't remember. A small facsimile of that would be an awesome pre-order bonus.
