"Will a violent, outwardly religious video game find a receptive audience amongst gamers?"

Only in a violent and outwardly religious country... wait... d'oh!

maybe if I was able to play the game from a reverse perspective, ie, be a soldier in the antichrist's army... man, that sounds like all kinds of fun, someone should get on that.

reminds me of the Billy Graham's Bible Blaster game parodied on the Simpsons several years ago.

The religous right loves real life violence, just not computer violence. Look at the passion of the christ. That's probably the most violant movie ever made, yet they condemn movies and games that depict more cartoony violence, ie obviously fake for entertainment purposes. Just goes to show how contradictory the religous right is. I hope this game gets pulled off the shelves and has numerous lawsuits just like gta.

Can you unlock playable character Kirk Cameron of Growing Pains' fame?

If you can, it's worth every penny. If you can't, I agree with Chiablo.

Running over old ladies and having sex with prostitutes: Bad

Killing people who disagree with you because of religion: Good

So when do we all get the balls to properly label the megachruch subculture as cult? Seems to me only brainwashing could lead those who are supposed to espouse Christlike examples of peace and justice to embrace killing "the other."

The difference between movies like that, and "violent" movies, are that one genre promotes violence as a solution to problems, while the other uses it for artistic purpose/show a point. I believe the point of PotC was to show sacrifice, albeit a bit overdone IMO

If Jesus was whacking off the hides of the Pharisees with a 2 x 4 and his carpenter tools, then you'd have a point :)

It is interesting when posts like these come up. You get to see the hatred possible from both sides of the fence :)

Oi, if you're going to make a "Christian" video game, at the very least base it on a movie/book that DOESN'T SUCK!

Seriously, if licensed games are typically 1/2 to 2/3 as good as their "inspiration," then this game will go straight to the trash. That said, can we please avoid the "Christians are stupid and their games are too" comments, please? Christian gamers everywhere (myself included) will thank you.

How in the world would you play a game based on this series...?

Kind of like that game, The Bible Game. The Wrath of God took away your points.

Bad. Idea.

thank you. let's just nip that one in the bud, if we can. i'm a Christian, and i enjoy violent games (Manhunt, GTA series, etc), as well as non-violent. i think this game is probably gonna stink. not because it's a Christian-themed title, but because this movie series sucks it, and most movie-based games are death.

"Killing people because they disagree with you becuase of religion: good."

DG, this is not going to be a game about killing non-christians because they are non-christians. We have Age of Empires (with crusade like scenarios) for that.

I garuantee that the violence in this game will be primarily persecution directed toward christians, and christians having to defend themselves.

And, BTW, you take a huge leap with your conclusion that the end result of megachurch culture is to kill the "other".

And, of course it is morally wrong.

"Killing people who disagree with you because of religion: Good"
Humm, where does it say that? Do you really think that Christians *want* to do this?

"So when do we all get the balls to properly label the megachruch subculture as cult?"
Yes, I admit, I am apart of a cult! They teach me to follow Christ's example, and he was a rampaging violent person who wanted to kill anyone in His way.

"Seems to me only brainwashing could lead those who are supposed to espouse Christlike examples of peace and justice to embrace killing "the other.""
Yes, we are the Christian taliban, run for your lives, I am going to do a suicide bombing immediately.

What are you smoking?

Here is an idea, Why don't we make a game where one militant religious group that doesn't agree with the other religions of the world start wars with them and there country. They could call it jihad. They could claim that there god commands them to do it and they will get 20 Virgins if they do anything to hurt the other group. Then they could......... Wait...... Shit this is real life! Man screw that game!!!!!

If the game is supposed to take place after the rapture, then there will actully be no REAL Christians left to do the killing in this game!

The game is based on the books more than the movies. Who has ever said that a movie is better than the books? Harry Potter - book. Tom Clancy's stuff - book. Left Behind - Book series is much better than the movies.

"But megachurches are very likely to embrace this game." That says it all right there. This isn't a Christian video game. It's an action game revolving around a near-future premise that is based on a series of popular novels that themselves are loosely based on a small part of Christian scripture. It's marketed to Christian evangelicals, but it is hardly a "Christian" game.

DISCLAIMER:
I am a Christian. For all those who would automatically dismiss my credibility because of this fact, please move on.

MY OPINION:
The books weren't trash. I actually only read a few of them, but they were pretty good. I mean, they were best sellers after all... But despite that fact, I don't think the content would make for a very good game. Of course none of us know anything about it yet, but I just don't see what content and objectives could make it very successful. However I hope that I am horribly wrong. A strong title in this genre could really open the doors of oportunity and silence all the nay-sayers.

A PERSONAL NOTE:
It is really sad to see all the anti-Christian posts EVERY time a blog addresses the topic. A while back on joystiq an article was posted about video game themed music by Christian rapper KJ-52. Of course the board was flooded with the usuall imaturity and ignorant rhetoric. It just amazes me how many people can so flagrantly attack something that they obviously have no understanding of. I'm not even defending my own beliefs here either. Whoever made the comments aimed at Islam should check their facts as well. If you're going to insult a group of people at least know what the heck you're talking about, otherwise you just look like a fool. I was pretty sure America was founded on religious freedom and an intolerance for religious persecution. My how far we've come...

The books are better than the movie.

Boy, talk about damning with faint praise.

Philip Jose Farmer covered this ground better decades earlier and without a mass of paper suitable to weigh down a corpse for disposal in a body of water. Of course, if you stack up all of his novels and short stories that dealt with the thorny questions of religion you would have a good stack.

This series reminds me of a book reviewer who called 'Bridges of Madison County' porn for middle-aged women. She said she had an agreement with her husband that she wouldn't bring that garbage if he didn't bring home Penthouse. The Left Behind series is porn for that bizarre section of humanity who avidly looks forward to the end of the world because it would be a good thing.

Oh well, at least it's amusing to where Troy Linden is today. A long ago employer of mine thought he going to be a real mover and shaker in the game business but I never understood why. Regardless of whether I held any strong religious beliefs I'd be wary of trying to produce overtly religious games that cater to adherents of a real life faith. The situations in a game like FFX worked well but largely because the player had no stake in either side of the conflict. Worse, almost any game will run the severe risk of making shoppers wonder if this is based on something they saw Ned Flander's kids playing on 'The Simpson's' Imagine being told in real life, "Simpsons did it!"

First of all, I'm an athiest. I read all the Left Behind books, and I found them rather amusing. They are to books what The Core and XXX are to movies.

I think it'd be pretty hard to make a GTA style game out of that series, but why the hell not. Have any of you actually read the books? Plagues of locusts with the bodys of horses, the tails of scorpions, and the heads of a warrior, and when they bite you you can't even kill yourself because you have to suffer until the next plague! And I'm pretty sure the next one was the sun becoming hot enough to kill anyone that steps outside. Dude, fucking bring it! I'll buy it.

And yes, if you can unlock Kirk Cameron, it'd pretty much be the sweetest bonus to be in a game, ever.

That's ignorant Crono141. Christians are being persecuted right now in Africa, China and North Korea and were persecuted by the Romans.

If it's a well made game I'll play it, but I'll believe it when I see it... games "based" on things are seldom above average.

I don't know how Christian a game like this could be since Jesus taught the turn the other cheek peace stuff and peace doesn't tend to be very fun for very long... like The Sims, everybody ends up drowing them in a pool.

All this retarded by the numbers religious argument is missing the point that there's some great material for game scenarios in the good book (particularly the old testament).

NInegauger: very true about the Christians being persecuted.

Those of you who don't believe, check out: http://www.persecution.com/ - Voice of the Martyrs helps the persecuted around the world. If you want to see persecution, they can send you a free monthly newsletter which includes pictures of persecuted Christians who have survived or died for Jesus.

This game may be cool, or not. It's all in the hands of the developers and if they're talented or not. Time will tell.

I thank Spartacus and the other people who haven't bashed Christians for taking the words out of my mouth.

First of all, I am a evangelical Christian that has read all the Left Behind adult series, some of the teen series, the prequel books, the military spin-off series, the archaeological spin-off, and the political spin-off series. I also own all 3 movies. I will most likely buy this game. There are two parts to the game, kinda like warcraft...you can play either a member of the Tribulation Force or part of Nicolae's (who is the Anti-Christ) army. There will be so called christians left behind because if they weren't right with God they will be left behind. So there will be people left behind that do know what is going on...just didn't truely believe it before the Rapture...the bible even states there will be a multitude of people of an unknown number that will become Christians after the Rapture...at least 144,000 Jews will be converted to Christianity. And during the Tribulation...its a "kill or be killed" society...in the books they didn't kill unless in self-defense.

Another point...Christians have been persecuted for centuries for one thing or another. It still happens to this day even in America, not just overseas. Heck, even muslims attack Christians because they say Christianity is not a real religion and that Mohammed is the only true way to heaven.

From what I've read and seen...it looks like this game is going to be like some of the RPGs out there...pick a side and try to survive...my type of game...

now off my soap box I go
