Speaking with reporters at a recent
Dynasty Warriors event, Koei vice-president Kiyoshi Komatsu hinted
at a Sony event to be held on March 15 at an unspecified location in Japan. Though Sony refused to comment on the
event, this latest revelation has sparked hopes that Sony is finally ready to come clean about the status of the
PlayStation 3. March 15, or the "Ides of March," was thought to be an auspicious date in the Roman
calendar—it's also the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. To borrow the phrase from Mr. Shakespeare, all ye
doubters best "beware the Ides of March.”

Haha, that picture is great.
Can't wait till this and then Phil Harrison's speech at the Game Developer's conference on March 22nd. Its insane how much dirt journalists have to dig up to find these incredibly scarce nuggets of info. Can you imagine if there was no internet? The PS3 might just be considered vaporware if all we had was black and white newsprint. The horror.

People won't care, they'll be too busy playing GRAW or Oblivion on their 360, or Animal Crossing on the DS.
We already know that PS3 isn't about the games. Like the PSP it is nothing more than a new way for Sony to sell movies, and that's just sad.

Unless you live in Japan, we were always getting it in the Fall here in the States. The Spring launch was just for Japan (soooo ain't happening).
Anyhoo. Its not fair how hard up for PS3 news I am. I get giddy like a schoolgirl whenever I hear even the smallest nugget of goodness. Sony is a bunch of cockteasers, I swear.
My prediction? Fall launch for japan and america, spring 2007 in Europe. Price will be 400. Possibly 500, but no way they'd do more than that. And I think they're gonna keep the boomarang controller. Also giving better than 50/50 odds that the ps3 will ship with a hard drive.
So I'll be waiting anxiously for the 15th. In a toga. With a knife. Just waiting to get et tu Brutus on some fools.

Interesting...sounds like all the bad press has forced Sony's hand to show something. Unfortunately when their hand is forced I expect only more hype. When was the last time Sony released anything on time.
They shouldn't have waited till all these cool 360 games are coming out. They had more momentum back when everyone actually thought the PS3 would be superior to the 360. But now that GRAW, Fight Night, Burnout and soon Oblivion, Blazing Angels, BattleField 2, The Outfit, Far Cry are all coming out...it is clear that the 360 is kicking ass where it matters most...Gaming.

There will be NO RELEASE DATE announcement. I can guarantee that. March 31st is the fiscal year end for Sony. This is merely an attempt to generate publicity and stong end of the year investments to boost their sagging financial portfolio. What I can guarantee is more pre-rendered cutscenes. VERY scarce playable demos which "are in no way an example of the full capabilities of the system" And alot more flash and dash. Expect more showings similar to the Uunreal and MGS4 in which games are "rendered realtime" but not playable. I applaud their business sense but their ethically execution leaves so much to be desire that they will bankrupt themselves morally. Before you cry MS fanboy. MS doesnt blatantly lie or deceive, rather they are really bad and getting things done and getting them doen properly. In addition their tendency to monopolize and overcharge should also be considered morally wrong as they take advantage of the lack of options to the consumer. blah, blah, blah. I talk to much. Maybe I need my own blog.

"MGS4 in which games are "rendered realtime"
Maybe you don't follow the past history of stuff shown for MGS games but EVERY trailer they show for the MGS games has ALWAYS been done with the real-time IN-GAME engine.
bandit @ Mar 9th 2006 3:25PM
Maybe you dont understand the suggestive use of buzzwords in the industry. Exactly what does "rendered realtime" mean? The Ps2 had a technical limit of 75 million polygons per sec. Does this mean it was even seen in game? Using the in-game engine does not in anyway shape of form vary based on the number of polygons in a model, nor the numner of pixels onscreen. To that end the software engine will throw out whatever the hardware can produce. That being said. Functions that require integer processing, DSP, and branch prediction take an 80% HIT, read that 80% hit when processed on an SPE. How do I know? IBM did internal benchmarking. In an actual PLAYABLE game, interactive physics, certain varieties of AI, (not scripted), and the gameplay code are not nearly as ridiculously parrelel as graphics code, which the SPEs were literally born to do. I said all that to say this. The graphics seen on the MSG4 demonstration are definitely possible and achieveable but not at this time. That is NOT to say that the Polygons and 3D models were no rendered realtime. They definitely were. The fact is the use of physics, AI, or anything that appeared to be gameplay code, what just a very good Pixar movie. which created or "rendered" the polygons "realtime" Dont be fooled into believing every calculation you saw on screen was interactive and being processed as you watched. Again Im not saying that MGS4 wont look and play like that when it finally makes it to retail. HOWEVER. At the time the demo was shown, it was as legitamate as any other pre-rendered cutscene. Kudos to nvida on such a nice GPU, but if you are familar with PC cards and their demos, they do the EXACT same thing that game makers do with their trailers. The REAL IN-GAME graphics never come close to the tech demos.
Shad Genki @ Mar 9th 2006 3:28PM
Hey, maybe they'll annouce that PS3 will be able to play streaming webradio and view pictures and movies, then we can send an email to our buddy so they can go home and get online to play FFXI with us. Remember, like the PS2 promo vid years ago??
SteveO McBeaveO @ Mar 9th 2006 3:31PM
More useless hype. Funny pictures though. Here's the deal. Sony is getting it self into serious trouble trying to push all the wrong things at all the wrong times. Blu-ray and HD DvD are a waste. Video disks are in a transitonal state right now. Who really wants to replace all thier DVDs. I am still working on updating my old VHS stuff. For now they still have the lions share of top-notch third party developers in thier pocket, but they are always the first rats to jump off of a sinking ship. If the 360 continues to succeed they way they have so far, it won't be too long before they get exclusive with the big dogs like Square Enix and the like. That one in paticular would do Sony in for me. There is also the Revolution to consider. The Nintedophytes would cut off thier nuts just to play the next Zelda. It also has the lingering promise of the 3rd party light saber motion reactive controller buzz happening for it. (trust me folks have been talking). All in all Sony really needs to step it up and just come clean. They could come in fashionably late with a true kick ass launch line up and really clean house, but things are going to have to take a different direction in a hurry before Sony starts singing it's WOnder Swan song.
agent864 @ Mar 9th 2006 3:36PM
too late I got a 360 and GRAW. that and HL2 and PS2 Black should keep me happy in the meantime. I still haven't finished Katamari and SOTC. My ratio of games PS2:GC:Xbox:PC is like 5:4:1:.5 . I like the 360, its nice, looks cool, works well (mine was built in January '06). So I'm lucky enough to be able to have all 4. So my next gen ratio of games is PS3:Rev:360:Vista is 0:0:1:0. (throw in a couple decimal places for Geometry Wars). So 360 is winning so far, but it wont take much for PS3 / Rev to catch up and pass once they're released.

"The graphics seen on the MSG4 demonstration are definitely possible and achieveable but not at this time."
Can you prove that the MGS4 trailer was not possible on the PS3? No of course you can't.
Also, going off what you said...you are basically saying that despite the trailers shown over the years for MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 that all of those were "modified" videos using extra effects. Yet in EVERY trailer ever shown for the MGS series (except for the MGS4 teaser shown at E3 05) the footage shown were from cutscenes in the SHIPPED game.
"If the 360 continues to succeed they way they have so far, it won't be too long before they get exclusive with the big dogs like Square Enix and the like."

I love when people bring up the Metal Gear Solid 4 demo as being proof that the PS3 will rock the world.
Hideo Kojima, the games creator, has gone on record saying that the Xbox 360 is capable of running the PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4 interactive presentation.
http://kamalot.blogspot.com/2005/11/ps3-hard-drive-online-xbox-360.html
The truth is, Sony CAN'T release screen shots. If they did, people would realize that the PS3 isn't any more powerful than the 360 and they would go get a 360 today instead of waiting till whenever Sony gets off it's ass.
bandit @ Mar 9th 2006 4:49PM
WOW, love the flames.
bv, that video proves EXACTLY what Im saying. If you have a powerful enough graphics card download any of the newer tech demos from nvidia or ati and prepare to $h*t your pants. IF you are blown away by what you have seen for the PS3 realtime then you shoule be out of your mind from the tech demos CURRENTLY available for PCs. IN the end the games DO NOT look like that. IN GAME.
JAGO, you fail to comprehend. As I detailed before rendering CUTSCENES and rendering actual IN-GAME content are TWO entirely different things. I have already given you a technical reason for this so I wont even bother going more into depth on that point. Rather I will take baby steps with you as you are obviously the infancy of your technical knowledge.
Point 1) Games are interactive
2) Every action the user makes must be processed
3) Every realtime calculation must be processed
4) Graphics code can run indenpenantly of other processes
5) Eliminating the other processes allows you to graphic rendering performance that would have been significantly degraded if the other processes were still running.
6) Therefore when AI, physics, and actual user imput, collision detect, and general software response to application isnt happening on the CPU. The cpu can then focus its cycles on processing on task. IE graphics rendering. Therefore, IF down right. Cutscene will NEVER technically be equivalent to in game screenshots of the same game. because system resources need to be spread out among the different processes happening. For all intends and purposes the PS3 and 360 can RENDER realtime Toy Story. The real issue is getting that level of graphic fidelity while making the game actually INTERACTIVE. (not changing settings and watching the game run itself)
The specs are finalize btw. How the heck do you think developer make games for consoles?

Beloved Joystiq-
I'm not sure why this story and others like it are news worthy. Has it not been made clear yet that Sony is NOT revealing anything until E3? Any info we REALLY want to know most likely won't even be revealed at GDC, so why would they reveal anything of substance at an "unspecified location", on a less than meaningful day for gamers?...
The only posts these stories incur are flame wars between entrenched gamers in the great next generation fanboy war. It's as if you try to exacerbate the riff between those waiting for PS3's the those playing their 360's.

bv @ Mar 9th 2006 5:28PM
Hey bandit,
In the beginning on the video Kojima mentions that everything is being run off of a Playstation 3 devkit and that the camera and lighting is being manipulated in real time. Thats fact 1. Fact 2 is that i have downloaded the Nvidia demos and they are exactly what you would expect to get in a realtime situation. How is it possible that Konami will ship a version of MGS4 that is somehow less underdeveloped and less beautiful as what we see in that REAL TIME video. What you see in that vid is what you get, i don't understand your point.
Eric-
I love these posts. Joystiq is doing us a favor by keeping the PS3 hopefuls informed with any and all info that exists out there. I could give a damn if joystiq posted an article about how Howard Stringer recently grew a goatee, i would still read the entire article searching for PS3 clues and enjoy it like a man. I also like debating and I enjoy reading other people's opinions. Why would you want to make this an argue free zone, there is no fun in that.
Eric @ Mar 9th 2006 5:48PM
bv,
I also thoroughly enjoy reading other peoples opinions and, in fact, my own opinion can be and has been changed by reading them.
What I'm tired of reading, is posts by people who lack either the ability to intelligently argue their opinion, or just flat out lack the acumen. Normally, people who use terms like xbug, suxorz, PS3 fagboy, tend to cause me to lose interest quickly.
As far as me asking this story's importance---I suppose I'm just tired of getting excited, then being completely let down. I'm jaded and I just want solid news....ya know?

"As I detailed before rendering CUTSCENES and rendering actual IN-GAME content are TWO entirely different things."
HAve you ever heard of a realtime IN-GAME engine cutscene? You know...things are pretty much common place now. You seem to think that b/c it is acut scene that it can't possibly be using the IN-GAME engine (aka NOT a pre-rendered video which was proven in that video just shown.)
I'll say it again...EVERY MGS trailer that has ever been shown has used the actual IN-GAME engine that is used int he actual game. Just b/c you are unable to do anything in the cutscene doesn't it isn't using the game engine.
So like I said...do you have 100% undeniable proof that the MGS4 demo was not real time? No you don't...

Ok here is my 2,000,000,000,000 cents.....lol
I really don't like Sony games. They are always behind in graphics and an unlimited source of loading time. And not only that I really think their prices for the plastic peices of crap that they have in stores are way over the the actual value. it should really be $50.00. And before anybody tries to convince me that it's not. Why don't you take a look at the inside of the PS2 nearest to you and see why these "great systems" break down so easily.
Another thing is this they copy off of others (meaning companies) outloud. like the joystick who was the first one to create that hm.... oh yeah the N64. Don't forget the rumble feature. Who had the internet first.... not Xbox, oh wait the sega dreamcast. And who can't forget the astonishing 3D graphics. Uh... the dreamcast. and as we speak who created the hard drive in games first. Not Sony.... microsoft with the Xbox and now wut are they doing putting them in the psp and Ps3. Hell they even stole from movies. bv @ Mar 9th 2006 6:56PM
Frank J,
I'm not even going to argue with you over your comments about how all "Sony" games suck. Games for the PS2 and PS1 are created by third party developers for the most part and tend to be released among all consoles regardless if its a Playstation or Xbox.
However, your second paragraph is hilarious. Even if the Dreamcast did have a unified online service first, how does this help your (xbox) fanboyism against Sony? Anyways, the rumble feature that you think Nintendo invented had been included in a joystick created by a company called CH Products about 20 years ago :
http://www.thecomputershow.com/computershow/reviews/chforcefx.htm
The hard disk argument is also irrelevant since its a technology that has existed for years and the only reason it surfaced in the xbox first was because the pricing and timing was right. And, the funniest bit you wrote is about the Spiderman 3 rip off. The Spiderman movies are a product of Sony you dimwit:
http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/spider-man/index.html
Franky J @ Mar 9th 2006 7:04PM
Okay bv,
so you're telling me that they ran out of so many ideas (in which they have none other than their multiplayer of seven) that they had to go go to their old movies.... kind of stupid isn't it. and the point about the joystick is that the N64 came out wit it and then sony had to copy it and say that they brung it back first. Tell me that it is not lame... oh yeah another thing i'm just saying this for people to think about something not to get offensive. fyi

I'm well aware of that plus there is no need to resort to namecalling either btw.
I guess all you guys seem to be avoiding the main part of my posts so I'll say it this way:
ALL THE METAL GEAR SOLID TRAILERS HAVE BEEN SHOWN USING THE ACTUAL IN-GAME ENGINE USING ACTUAL IN-GAME CUTSCENES FROM THE ACTUAL GAME.
@ Franky J:
"Take a good look at the logo for the PS3... look familiar? it's the exact same from Spider man 2."
Umm...you do know that Colombia Pictures is a Sony comapny right? And as for the test of your comments...it's not a "joystick" its an "analog thumbstick."
I do agree that the PS2 should be cheaper ($100 as opposed to $50) and who cares if the system is less powerful...it still has some of the best games.
"There is always glitches in every game they have"
Newsflash...just about EVERY game has some kind of bug in it. Just some games cover them up better then others and others are left in b/c they are not a major issue.
Franky J @ Mar 9th 2006 7:28PM
jgo that is true about the thumb stcik but the point is that you kno wut i meant and that is all i needed. As for the glitches I think they should at least try to cover their tracks before they release. And for spiderman 2 logo thing look at comment # 40. they do have some of the best games, but the graphics are just awful to me. And i'd like to post up one more thing why don't they use actual in-game scenes of someone actually playin the game or a demo. to me the reason is this : they all would look like the games from Grand Theft Auto. Who's hands are always rectangle and women are flat chested and you could never make out any ones true face. i just want to see better out of them. Then maybe I would bye one of their products.

The reality is Sony is facing tremendous pressure to deliver on something they are most likely months behind on. Please don't continue believing that the PS3 will lauch in Spring of 2006 because it's not. Blu-Ray isn't going to launch until May 23rd 2006 and the players are going to cost $1000 - $1,500. I believe will we see PS3 stateside in early 2007. Forget all of the ho-hum about Sony being hush hush. You see all of these trailers, snapshots of this hulking plastic box, news about this PS3 HUB service, and title lists that include the same rehashed games in their 20th and 30th iterations; and everyone is like "OH PS3 is going to blow your 360/Rev away. Then Kutaragi says bullshit like, "We- with Cell technology- will be able to deflect asteroids and comets from the Kuiper Belt at 120x the speed of light in dual 1080p"; and you guys just eat it up. Other comments such as "the graphics will annihilate the Xbox 360", "360 will blow ass in Japan even though it hasn't been out very long", and "Blu-ray is the Optical Disk Messiah", oh and need I forget, "HUB will own Live" is just plain foolish. You guys argue about whether the MSG4 video was "real time pre-rendered" or "real-time in game" and it's just a trailer. The fact is nobody knows. But I can go to Best Buy and play GRAW in stunning HD and know that I am controlling the game and oh my god is it wonderful. But that's my opinion.
Oh I forgot to mention all you Sony Fanboys, you're going to need to save up on that display to show your DRM infested formats. Make sure you buy two 1080p displays and they both have HDMI otherwise your movies will be downscaled to 540p.
Oh and HUB isn't even ready yet and even when it is, Live will destroy it in every way concievable.

#24, How can you say the 360 is not a sucess? Around the world (except for one country JAPAN) the 360 is sold out. Last numbers I read were that it has already sold 10 million units. Look at the population base :
United States 280,562,489
Japan 126,974,628
As of the population data that is most current that I found (2002). The USA is #3, while Japan is in #10. Countries like Germany, Norway, Fance, UK, Sweden, Australia, Italy, and others. Those smaller countries alone far out weight the population of Japan. And the more people you have in a nation, the more units you will sell in that country.
Basing a consoles sucess on the sales in one country is not a accurate assessment of the sales. Besides Microsoft knew that they would have a huge up hill fight in Japan. Japanese have a very fierce sense of national and ethinc pride. Look at the electronics industry, look at the auto industry in Japan they buy Japanese made products. About the only industry that I know of that does better in Japan then their own native products in the entertainment industry.
#29 & #30: I completely agree with you. I really enjoy people on both sides Microsoft and Sony fans. If a person can discuss things rationally, I will always read through their comments even if they do not reflect my own, or praise my console of choice.
#43: I find it interesting that you pick about the 360 line up as "A clutter of war based shooters that mainly spawned from superior pc versions. (whether they be on foot in 3rd or 1st person or in a plane).". But what is slated for the PS3 line up so far? Well we have Metal Gear series which has been done over at least three times but maybe more. Some fighting games, and a couple of RPGs. I have not read any great new concept titles that have pledged to the PS3.
#47: "The excellent part is that mainstreamers will ensure sony does better (subscribers wise) than live, just as PS2 had more numbers online than MS did with xbox1."????? Are you kidding me? Please if you have found some real numbers to back that up share with everyone your source. Because I own both XBox 1 and PS2 and from what I have seen in the online area there are way more people playing Xbox online then PS2 online. That said that is an observation of my online time experince and I do not have any hard numbers to prove that.
"PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box", I am wondering if this keynote will deal with more of the expanding list of functions that video game console seem to be taking? I have read news bits from this website and others stating all the new Non-Gaming features that the PS3 might do. I am speculating that this might be more of what his speech will be about.
I am very curious what is about humans that make them very brand loyal. People who drive a certain brand of automobile will be very loyal to them and down play other brands. In the computer industry people who program in one language will be very critical of other languages. In the video game industry many are critical of the other console. This blind devotion is really interesting. Now if having this sort of devotion to ones children or wife or other loved ones I can see, but to objects that are bought almost seems foolish.
