the only current fix is to lower the resolution down on your xbox until you reach a supported non-widescreen resolution. This is either 1024x768 or worst... 640x480. Mind you 640x480 defeats the purpose of playing on a PC monitor in the first place!

Well this joystiq article highlighted my biggest annoyance with the 360 so far... VGA incompatibility:

In other words in some games, such as PGR3 and Oblivion, a 16:9 signal is sent instead of the 1280x1024 resolution our consoles are set to which leads to an exciting world of Anorexic Elves & Micromachines in HD!

Well as with this thread, here's some official non-response from bizarre and microsoft that clarifies what's happening with PGR3!

http://xbox360.qj.net/PGR3-not-truly-high-definition-if-in-game-screenshots-are-to-be-believed/pg/49/aid/3954
http://www.coldforged.org/archives/2005/11/14/microsoft-already-walking-a-slippery-slope

Rumors flew around prelaunch when a poster at Bizarre named MoonFace reported that screen captures from PGR3 were in a resolution of 1078x600.

And I finally I found 1024x576 screenshots of Oblivion!!!... you'd be hard pressed to find higher res screenshots released by bethesda for the 360!!! Do a google search!

Although it's worth noting that there are 1280x720 screenshots elsewhere. I seriously think that these are actually just upscaled versions of 1024x576. In fact I think that's what everyone playing at 720p is getting too. I think that our monitors merely finish the upscaling process when we set the console to 1024x768. What are the chances that this will be fixed in a patch? zero. They didn't forget to include the bars because the 1280x720 signal doesn't exist. Why else would there be so many 1024x576 resolution screenshots all over the all over the web? What kind of PC or TV runs at that resolution!?
Microsoft implied that games would render at least 1280x720 w/ 60fps, but what they actually said was:
Quote:
all Xbox 360 games must support 720p high definition output resolution as a minimum.

well a 1x1 resolution can be support 720p. apparently m$ defines HD as any signal displayable on an HDTV or Monitor. nice one! Rendering at lower resolutions isn't a deal breaker considering PGR3 and Oblivion are two of the very best looking titles out for the 360.

But why mislead us M$!? I think we can chop all of this up to a next gen hype war between PS3 and Xbox 360. Just don't hold your breath for 1280x1024 support for games that render video at a resolution lower than 1280x720 or for official response to this problem from Microsoft, Bizarre Creations, or Bethesda!!!

Re- 48: Although I havent tested it, yes I am sure 480P via VGA would be better..... that is what I am running to my Aconda and it is awesome... TV via MCE2005 extender could be better though... I might try SCART for that sometime soon (I think the 100Hz and Movie Mode on the TV would be better for TV)...?

There are reasons not to support 4:3 (or 5:4) at 1280x1024 or higher (it is a higher resolution than 720p).

But why MS did not set up the 360 to send a 720p letterboxed signal to 1280x1024 resolution displays (letterboxed) as standard, instead of leaving developers to do it (and end up with the PGR3 mess), is beyond me.

Most LCDs don't have pixel mapping, are very poor in non-native resolutions, and would stretch an incorrect signal. 720p is the target resolution for the console, there is no reason why 1280x1024 would not be displayed as 1280x720 in every game just fine. As a consumer without an HDTV and no interest in buying one this is frustrating.

Listen!!! Ill Keep this simple.

LCD HDTVS have a FIXED native resolution of 720p.
The MUCH more expensive ones have FIXED native resolutions of 1080i or 1080p.

There is no customization you can do to change your HDTVs FIXED NATIVE RESOLUTION.

HDTVs do not have a native Resolution of 480i so all off your old Xbox - Ps2 - Gamecube - Games will be distorted and there will be lag from when you press a button to what you see on the screen. So THE XBOX 360 is NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE its defective!@!!

It doesnt really matter if your HDTV can recieve these signals. The Fixed Native Resolution will have to upscale or downscale these images and cause the lag and distortion ect.

READ your MANUAL SPECS of yout HDTV and find out your native resolution.Thats the only setting you should be using when configuring your game.

Remember once you go HDTV youll have to play all your old games on a regular 4:3 480i monitor for it to be displayed properly.

Playstation 2:
480i (most games), 480p (a few games)

Gamecube : 480i (a few games), 480p (most games)

X-Box: 480p (most games), 480i (a few games), 720p (a few games)
